I'm surprised it wasn't already on the store closing list.

It's not closing (and neither is the Waldbaums a mile west of Pathmark and Shoprite). Pretty much since it's been open, it's been the #1 store in the Patchogue-Medford area, but the Medford Stop & Shop has narrowed the gap since its renovation back in '05. Shoprite will definitely hurt Pathmark though since it's right on the service road as opposed to Pathmark.

As mentioned previously I work at Shoprite in Southington which is owned by The Drust Family. And now I hear The Drust's are trying to negotiate to build 2 more new Shoprite's - one in the former Shaw's on West Main Street in New Britain and one in the former A&P in Middletown. More on this as I hear it.

Marc, any word on the negotiations for the Drust Family to open in New Britain and Middletown?

No, but the company newsletter mentioned there are plans to expand beyond the two existing stores in Southington and Wallingford.

Shop Rite continues to scout new locations in the capital district of New York, home base to Price Chopper, Hannaford also has a strong presence with several dozen stores and a distribution center.

Big props to Mr. Drust for installing an $80,000 generator when he built his store in Southington, CT. Shoprite in Southington was operating on full power from the generator for more than 15 hours while the rest of the shopping center remained in the dark. Those thunderstorms yesterday were really nasty little buggers. The generator can run the store for up to 3 days.

The ShopRite on Roosevelt Boulevard, in Philadelphia, PA, just recently received the current logo on it's outside signage, having the 1974-2000 ones removed.  The interior also was redone a bit as well.

Check out this old school Shoprite logo on the sign for Stanley Plaza on Slater Road in New Britain. Only one building remains on the property that was most recently used for Walmart and is now a Webster Bank Corporate Training Center.

Photo stolen from the I remember New Britain Group on Facebook.

The Patchogue Shoprite construction finally seems to be going into overdrive, with a Shoprite trailer and countless others on site. Still no clear opening date yet, but I've heard by the end of the year.

Officially opening on October 2nd (They've been doing a "count down" every week or so in the Times Union).

Given how Price Chopper and Hannaford have dragged their heels in the Albany market for the last decade, they have every right to be afraid especially since they know ShopRite has expansion plans. They're building on the former OTB teletheater site in Albany (down the road both) and plan to open near one of Price Chopper's "pet" locations in Slingerlands.

I wish ShopRite the best given how others have either been reluctant to expand in (Shop & Stop, Big Y, debatably Shaw's, debatably Weis) or are constrained by alleged "gentleman's agreements" (Wegmans). The hole there has been gaping and when ShopRite tries to do upscale as they've done in the DC/Baltimore suburbs, they do it surprisingly well.

So is ShopRite the number 2 grocer in the entire northeast behind Ahold? Sure seems like it now.

They will also be opening a location in Selden, NY in the near future, replacing a former Bobs.

Geez... that will absolutely kill the King Kullen next door in Selden... It looks like it's on it's last leg as it is... I guess it's only saving grace is that they do the Shop from Home orders at this location... I guess only time will tell..

And it looks like the thought of Shoprite becoming a real contender and squeezing out the piss-poor A&P and King Kullen stores is becoming truer and truer on LI. Stop & Shop probably should not rest on their laurels, because Shoprite doesn't roll over like the others do.

To it'd credit, that King Kullen has been there forever and Selden does lack competition since the nearest Stop & Shop, Waldbaums, and Pathmark locations are a bit of a drive away. If ShopRite does shop at home orders at this new location, King Kullen is doomed.

Waldbaums is actually pretty close on the corner of Middle Country and 83. That too has also been around forever.
