All the Philly-Area WaldenBooks stores have been remodeled in the past few months as "Borders Express". The stores are less cluttered now and have a modern design like Borders have..however there is less selection.

This is my former Best as you can see its a Borders today as well as a Men's Warehouse. The Best opened in the late 70's, 1978-1979, around then, and closed with the fleet in 1996. Borders and The Men's Warehouse took over less then a year later.

Here is one of the three Borders stores in the Albany area. This one is located on Wolf Road in front of Colonie Center, and I have friends who work at this location as well. It opened in 94, I believe. It was just remodeled on the inside as well.

borders books may get bought out!

Buy-out groups peruse Borders
  Updated: 9:42 p.m. ET Jan. 11, 2006
Borders Groupcould emerge as the next US retailer to be taken private, as a number of big buy-out groups consider making offers for the Michigan-based book and music store chain.

Several private equity firms in recent weeks have held discussions with banks willing to assemble a financing package to fund a purchase of Borders, according to people familiar with the matter.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Last night, Borders reported strong results for the holiday season, with comparable sales at US superstores up 2.2 per cent. The company also revised its guidance for fourth-quarter earnings towards the upper end of the range it had previously suggested.

The buy-out groups ? which include Texas Pacific Group, Bain Capital, Apollo Management and Leonard Green Partners ? have been waiting for the holiday results from Borders to decide whether or not to proceed with bids. Insiders said any offers were likely to value the company in excess of $25 a share, or almost $1.8bn.

It was unclear last night what effect the strong sales might have on the prospects for a buy-out. The figures could embolden the private equity firms to move forward, and even to consider higher offers than what they envisaged. On the other hand, Borders' management might be more reluctant to sell on the back of such an encouraging showing.

Yesterday, the company's shares rose 1.3 per cent to $22.41, giving it a market capitalisation of $1.5bn.

Borders came close to agreeing on a sale to private equity groups in 2003 but the deal fell apart in the final stages of negotiations.

A buy-out of Borders would extend a string of dealmaking in US retailing, which has been driven mostly by private equity groups. Last year, Toys R Us and Neiman Marcus were purchased by consortiums of buy-out firms. This week, Burlington Coat Factory Warehouse received final bids for the company, which is expected to be sold for more than $2bn.

Borders operates about 1,200 stores under the Waldenbooks and Borders brands. It has significant international operations, including 54 Borders stores.

The company traces its history to the 1970s when Tom and Louis Borders opened a bookstore in the academic community of Ann Arbor, Michigan. In the 1980s, Waldenbooks and Borders were merged under the ownership of Kmart, a discount retailer, then spun off as a public company in the early 1990s.

The company has developed a fierce rivalry with Barnes & Noble, the New York-based book store chain. A decade ago, B&N was close to buying Borders, but the deal fell apart, partly over antitrust concerns.

Some observers do not exclude the possibility that B&N might look at Borders again should it hire its long-time financial advisers at Merrill Lynch to run an auction following the interest from the buy-out groups.

Actually, that was the former JCPenney store. The old Ames was near the other end of the mall.
