How could there not be a listing for this wonderful little chain. I believe they located were mostly in the Northeast and were all over the place. My town had a Burger Chef long before McDonalds or even Burger King. Their Burgers came in little plastic pouches and the fries were even better than McDonalds. Bought out by Hardee's in the early 80's all the stores were either converted or shut down, eventually Hardee's left the area. Most if not all the remaining restaurants were converted into various businesses or bulldozed. As the buildings have been so modified one would never know they were Burger Chefs. This is one place I truly miss.
Heres an abandon one.

Great pics of the old Burger Chefs. Unfortunately, the two we had in Evansville were both completely torn down and we have nothing to remember them by.

What are in their places now?
One was torn down to make room for the Lloyd Expressway and the other was torn down and a medical building is in its place.
The one on Newport Avenue in Rumford is now part of a car lot, the building was kept, remodeled and serves as an office, the one in North Attleboro is now a jewelry store and the one in Warwick near the former Ann & Hope is a Rocky Point chowder shack.
Hardees took over most of them here and then a year later closed them all
Former one in Pennsauken, NJ., now a seafood restuarant.

This one in Newport News, Virginia is now a frozen custard stand. Instead of doing something strange with the original sign they just put up a new one.

Does anyone know of any Former Burger Chef sites in Connecticut? I've seen what could of been one in Middletown on 66. It was an Enterprise car rental, but the building was very much like Burger Chef's, if I'm ever up that way again I'll have to get pictures.
Remembering the good ol days
This is a great picture of an abandoned 1970's "Cosmo II" building design of a Burger Chef location in the state of Indiana.

Just found out they were in Bristol, CT in the 70s on Farmington Avenue (where Frankie's Hotdogs is now located).
According to my parents, we used to have a Burger Chef. It was demolished before I was born. Still an empty lot where it was located.
Apparently Burger Chef had locations in Canada. Here's a former Burger Chef in Oshawa, Ontario.

Not to mention that Burger Chef was bought out by Imasco, a Canadian tobacco company, in 1982. Imasco owned Hardee's at the time, which resulted in the BC restaurants becoming Hardee's.
Having good nostalgic thoughts about this chain after watching last week's episode of
Mad Men.
My grandparents used to like to take my brother and I to their Cochran Rd. store just
outside of Pittsburgh. Those funky ceiling light fixtures with the odd little colored "v" shapes
on them sure brought back memories. Nice job by the Mad Men set design people recreating
a Burger Chef store circa 1969.
Last time I ate at one was on the Univ. of Pittsburgh campus in 1983.
The former Woodhaven, Michigan Burger Chef. This one never became Hardee's. It later became Uncle Harry's and is now Massage Envy Spa.

What is there now? What I meant BC buildings still standing...
The ones I remember were on Cochran Road in the Pittsburgh suburb of
Mt. Lebanon (location currently a Bruegger's Bagels store) and in the basement
of the Cathedral of Learning on the University of Pittsburgh campus (became
a Roy Rogers after Burger Chef filed bankruptcy, currently a cafeteria serving
much healthier fare).
Does anyone know anything about the Burger Chef Murders in Speedway way back when??? I just heard about it... can someone fill me in more about it
It happened at a store near Indianapolis in 1978. Four young employees, aged 16 to 20, disappeared. A passer by found the back door open with nobody inside. Around $500 was missing from the safe, and the cops presumed it was a case petty embezzlement.
Two days later the bodies of the four were found in the woods more than 20 miles away.
The new theory was that it was a kidnapping that stemmed from a botched robbery.
The theory is that one of the employees may have recognized one of the robbers and
they panicked.
There are supposedly suspects but without physical evidence they have never
been able to prosecute anyone.
The former Burger Chef location in Indiana which was the site of an infamous 1978 kidnapping and murder is being demolished. The building will be replaced by a dental office.
