In 2012, all Pamida stores were converted into the now-defunct Shopko Hometown chain. Yesterday, Shopko, their parent company went out of business for good...

Shopko Optical will continue to operate under new ownership...

I had first heard of Pamida from some family who lived in a remote town on
Michigan's Upper Peninsula.  It was a mining community where the mines were
tapped out and everyone struggled economically.  When Pamida showed up with
40 to 50 minimum wage jobs it was seen as a great boon to the community.

Later the former Fisher's Big Wheel store across from my Ames store in Imlay City
became a Pamida.  Later it became a ShopKo Hometown location when Pamida was
acquired.  It closed recently, along with the rest of the ShopKo chain.

That location was pretty far east for both chains.

Here's a Google Street View of the Pamida store in Ladysmith, WI

The store seems a lot bigger than most other Pamida locations
