Discuss any fond (or not so fond) food that you ate as a kid! ;)

You don't really have to list them!

You are right. I have seen them at my local Marc's Stores as well as at Giant Eagle.

A discussion about Burger King's YUMBO sandwich up on the Restaurants board got me to thinking about stuff we ate as kids when times were a bit tough economically.

The YUMBO was around in the 70's.  The era of Jimmy Carter stagflation.  My parents were trying to raise six kids, and my mom did not work outside the home.  So they were always trying to stretch the food budget in interesting ways.

One thing they came up with which I remember fondly was something my dad called Moonburgers.  You took an English muffin and topped it with some leftover sloppy joe meat.  Then top that with a slice of American cheese.  Run them under the broiler until the cheese bubbles.   We used to eat tons of this stuff, but I don't think I've actually had one since Disco died.

Sometimes the sloppy joes were made with something called KrogerPro.  Sold at Kroger stores, it was a mixture of ground beef and soy protein (which they could sell for less because ground beef prices were relatively high at the time)  In order to be palatable you had to bury the taste of KrogerPro under something hearty and flavorful like sloppy joe sauce.

The YUMBO is amazingly similar to another close-to-payday dinner item they came up with, which I admit I do not remember so fondly.

Any other "hard times" menu favorites out there?
