Popular toy store that was scattered throughout New England and the Mid Atlantic states. Prices were very low and the stores were bright and well lit. They also sold baby furniture, bicycles and later video games systems. Most if not all underwent a series of moving or remodeling in the 80's. The newer buildings had a castle like facade, a warehouse type interior and a mascot "Peter Panda" was added to their commercials. Went out of business in the 90's. I still don't see why this happened. Toys R Us was much more expensive, the Child World stores were in prime locations and the big box stores like Wal-Mart had yet to enter the scene.
Locations I know
East Providence RI--relocated to Seekonk Mass in 1984-85. Building was vacant for about a decade then Pep Boys moved in and heavily altered the inside and out.
Seekonk Mass--located at the end of the Seekonk Square shopping plaza. Closed in 1991-92 and was replaced by a HomeLife store. Facade was changed from castle look to a plain white front
Cranston RI--left the Garden City plaza, moved up Route 2 next door to Zayre(now a Building 19) closed in 1992 and was replaced by Syms. The castle turrets are still visible
Woonsocket RI--had the globe logo and the plain brick front. Closed in 1992 and was vacant until being demolished for a Lowe's.
North Dartmouth Mass--I know there was one in the North Dartmouth Mall that closed in the late 80's. I do not know what replaced it.
I also believe the headquarters was in Avon Mass.

CHILDREN'S PALACE TO SHUT ITS DOORS UNABLE TO NEGOTIATE AN AGREEMENT WITH LIONEL, TOY STORE CHAIN WILL CLOSE DOWN ITS 71 STORES
The 17 remaining Children's Palace stores in Ohio will soon close because the chain's parent company, Child World Inc., has been unable to strike a merger with another toy store chain. But discussions with Lionel Corp. have not been broken off, a Child World spokesman said. He stressed that the Canton, Mass., company simply decided to proceed with closing its stores because of uncertainty with the situation.Child World, which filed for bankruptcy...
Children's palace had 2 akron-canton ohio stores. it seems they were the major toy retail place and got there well before toys r us. newslibrary articles for the akron paper said that Toys r us did not come until late 1986. so there was 17 stores in ohio. They had closed 54 stores in spring 1992. When I tried to go to the one in portland maine in june 1992, I was told that they closed months before.

says Colorado Has New Toy King
Child World's five Children's Palace Colorado stores closed September 15 following store-wide liquidation sales. The move is seen by local industry observers as the result of an aggressive Toys "R" Us stance since the Paramus, New Jersey-based successful toy retailer entered the Denver market in June, 1990.
A Toys "R" Us spokesman told Children's Business that company executives are so bearish on Colorado they are exploring the possibility of opening a Kids "R" Us retail clothing division store here. Toys "R" Us stores are in Boulder, Aurora, ...

To my knowledge. I also think Child's World was the company's (corporate) moniker as well. However, in NE Ohio there was only Children's Palace.

i have seen this building and it was a child world. i saw it in 2003. by the way, I want to access that site where you got that. can you tell me where you got it.
Child World moved here from it's original spot in the North Dartmouth Mall. I haven't been in the area for years but remember the Grand Reopening sale since I picked up a ton of Colecovision games for practically pennies
I picked this up for 28 cents durring Child World's going out of buisness sale around 1992. It's one of those hand waving/baby on board type of signs that attach to a car window with a suction cup.
dsoe anyone have a picture of one of there stores witha logo idk liek some old picture i want to knwo what they looked like
Here's a closer look at the store logo on it. I only remember the store's and company being called Child World, but some of their price stickers read Child World the Children's Palace. This aparantly has a dual name logo.

The area is a dump, sadly.
Oh how I miss those Childrens Palace stores! Dayton Oh had two of them & Cincinnati had at least four of them. You should have seen them before a remodel...Those doors & windows or the front of that Media play are slightly altered but, the shape is the original. Those buildings looked like a castle with the towers & all. Those have been removed in this picture. I seem to recall multi color flags flying above on the roof too. A fond piece of my youth. R.I.P. my old dear friend Childrens Palace... Thanks, Dwayne
I didn't see some of the previous posts until I posted my earlier post. I wanted to comment on the Glenway ave Childrens Palace in Cincy. That was one of their bigger stores it was much bigger than the Colerain ave store or Tri County Mall one. The Toys R Us that is kinda sorta in the same lot was NOT there during Childrens Palaces lifetime. Toys R Us opened in like 1993 after Chlidrens was gone. It took over a building that had housed two other long gone chains Gold Circle & Hills. Just to let you Ames fans know directly across the street up on a hillside was the Western Hills Mall a very small place that was once home to Zayre & then became Ames. Thanks, Dwayne
There was a Child World in Westport, CT. Not sure when it went under, but it was eventually replaced by Toys R Us. I only remember going to the store once when it was a Child World.
There was one in Waterbury Ct. in the Waterbury Plaza. It's now a Super Stop and Shop.
There was a Childworld in the CT Milford Post Mall. In the late 70s and all throughout 80s I practically got either a toy or video game there and Milford TRU every Friday night.
My parents also would bring us to Westport Childworld which closed when they filed for bankruptcy in 91. TRU took over the building and just closed this past Jan. My business is 1 mile away from the former Westport TRU. I used to go there at least 3 times a week for the past 3 years. It really sucks they left. Sad thing is they could have stayed if the owner of the building agreed to fix the place. It was literally falling apart and the a/c barely worked. Some summer days it would reach 85 degrees no problem inside. The building is gutted right now (including the floor which is now dirt). Homegoods will be the new tenant. If I had to guess Homegoods is footing the bill. If not they will be paying some HEFTY rent.
There was also a Childworld in Hamden CT in the same Plaza as Jimmies used to occupy (Hamden Plaza). For those unfamiliar with Jimmies it was a sit down seafood resturant. Really good back in the day. I think the original one in Savin Rock is still open. I remember eating there in the mid 90s and the food and service was PUTRID. Back in the 80s when customer service was priority the food and service was excellent. Both, Jimmies and Childworld were in the plaza with the parked cars that were covered with ashpalt. Anyone remember them? I think it was referred to as the "ghost parking lot". My aunt and uncle who lived next door to us at the time in Monroe loved going to Jimmies at least once a month. So my cousin and I would tag along. My uncle would go to the hamden location since there was a Childworld in the same lot. No matter what time you went to eat at Jimmies the wait would be 45mins to an hour. So we would march on over to childworld and load up on star wars figures. Ah those were the times.....
I just wish I had photos from those good ole days!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I remember going to most of the southwestern Connecticut Childworlds as a kid. There was one in East Haven that is now a TJ Maxx, that unfortunately I never got to visit just drive by from the highway. I went to the Hamden one only a few times and remember climbing on the buried cars in the Ghost Parking Lot, it's a shame they took them out. Waterbury closed years before the whole chain went under. Milford and Westport were the two I visited the most, even worked in the Westport one doing seasonal stock work right out of high school. Out of all the dead retail chains from my childhood, I'd have to say I miss Childworld most of all.

In the background of this picture, you can see the West Mifflin, PA Children's Palace. This photo is from 1978, and came from a press kit about Century III Mall opening in 79. This store is now divided between Petco and Matress Discounters.

I saw this cart 2 years ago when I moved to this property. I live in a 7 story low-rise building in Manchester.
There are 2 elevators and a lot of seniors that live here too. Shopping carts come and go from supermarkets and other retailers too.
There is a carriage corral off the carport near the maintenance office for the collection of them. I was pretty excited when the child world cart made an appearance again!!

Hello to everyone here at the forum...first-time poster. :)
I can firmly say there was a location also in Brockton, MA at the Westgate Mall. It was an anchor store, along with Bradlees and Jordan Marsh prior to closing. Now, the mall has closed-off that anchor store lot and the end of this wing contains the mall security and Marshalls (in a relocated position from where it was).

Actually it was in Scarsdale, on Central Park Ave. just North of Ardsley Rd. Next to Scarsdale Ford, in the strip mall that still has Pizza & Brew. One of my favorite toy stores as kid, I think it closed well before the '90's.
Did the Buffalo area had Child World or Children's Palace store?
Children's Palace was one of the two original anchors of the Southtowne Crossing Shopping Center in Southgate, Michigan when it opened in 1986 (the other was Builder's Square). It closed with the chain in 1992 and was a Best Buy from 1993 to 2006, when it moved to the former food court at Southland Center a few miles away. The entire shopping center has been demolished for a Walmart.

There was a Child World on John Fitch Highway in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, it's now a cinema called, get this, Cinema World. It seemed Cinema World's owners renovated the hell out of the interior, as there's not a single trace of a Child World left inside.

Let's just say most US states are ground zero for Child World/Children's Palace conversions.
