Wegmans is a chain of supermarkets in Western, and Central New York, as well as other Northeast states. Discuss about them here.
I don't even know what to say...Wegmans is the best supermarket on the planet! I can not find any store that does it better than the Wegman family. Family owned and operated out of Rochester, NY...the stores, the food, the employees...they are just all great. I used to work for Tops but I do my shopping at Wegmans these days.
Love Wegmans..frendliest employees ever...Love their logo and stores too..:dizzy:

We will hav a Wegman's next year (or towards the end of this year) in Warrington...their prices look expensive though so I probably won't be shoping there too often.
There are several in PA - maybe just not where you are.
I saw them in Erie, Williamsport, Wilkes Barre and Scranton - and their website probably lists others.

Warrington Pa.? In that new shopping center? That might be good to have a new super market chain here, but I am against that new shopping center.

Yes, the new shopping center. Along with another STAPLES:mad: (I wonder if the Warminster location will close), a Sports Authority, Circuit City (signage was up for CC a few days ago on the entrance sign), Michaels, and I think a Borders, and more "theme restaurants"

They bought off at least 8 houses along with the abandon Exxon, The Generations Restuarant and Motel and a farm to build this center. They have that other one that I am still upset they built across the street, the one thats on the old Warrington Drive-In with the Target and all. I am planning on moving out of Warminster and moving back where I grew up in Ambler Pa. because this is rediculous with all this building and the billboard everywhere. I'm serious. I'm moving into my grandparents house when they move out next year.

That sounds nice. It is amazing. When I moved to the area 10 years ago, there were few housing developments (my house was brand new at the time), and I had to drive to Warminster or Warrington to get to the nearest grocery store. Kmart, Caldor, and Clover were the only "big box" stores around.
Now we have big box hardware stores, walgreens here and there (and they want to put another Walgreens in Jamison next to the Genuardi's--very odd as they usually only build on corner lots), car washes, Dunkin Donuts everywhere (at least 3), and a whole bunch of other crap.
The whole Warrington/Jamison/Warminster area is becoming very ugly. Every plot of land has been bought up causing horrible amounts of traffic. Overcrowding schools everywhere, and even when new ones are built, they are already being overfilled. If I could move, I would in an instant.

Wegmans ranks #1 on FORTUNE Magazine's List of 100 "Best Companies to Work For"
Rochester, NY ? For the eighth consecutive year, Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. is on FORTUNE magazine's list of the ?100 Best Companies to Work For,? this year ranking at the very top. FORTUNE has also named Wegmans to its Hall of Fame, as one of 22 companies who have been on the list since its inception.
Robert Wegman, chairman of the supermarket chain started by his father and uncle in 1916, said of the recognition: ?This is the culmination of my whole life?s work. When I became president of our company in 1950, after working in our stores for a number of years, I was determined to make it a great place to work.? His first step was to raise all salaries, and within a couple of years, he implemented fully paid health care. Later, the company added a defined contribution retirement plan, a 401K plan and an employee scholarship program, which has given nearly $54 million in tuition assistance to 17,000 employees since it began in 1984.
?No matter how much we invest in our people, we get much more in return,? said Wegman. ?When I visit our stores, customers stop me and say, ?Mr. Wegman you have a great store, but wow, your people are wonderful.?
Robert Wegman was named chairman in 1969, and in 1976 his son, Danny, was named president. Danny?s daughters have also joined the company: Colleen Wegman as senior vice president of merchandising and Nicole Wegman as produce group manager. ?We have tried to create an environment where our people?s ideas are listened to,? said Danny Wegman, ?and where they feel empowered to make decisions that impact their work.?
At 11 a.m. EST, Robert and Danny Wegman will hold a news conference at the company?s corporate office located at 100 Market Street in Rochester, New York. The news conference will also be available via satellite at 2 p.m. EST (see details below).
To celebrate their #1 ranking on FORTUNE?s list, Wegmans stores will serve cake to customers and employees on Saturday, January 22, at a time to be determined by each store. Media interested in photographing the January 22 event should contact Wegmans for the specific time at each store.
A video news release will be available via satellite on Monday, January 10, 2005: 14:00 to 15:00 Eastern Standard Time; SBS6; 74 degrees west; Transponder K02; DL: 11749.5 Vertical; Standard audio is 6.2 and 6.8.Total run time: 30 minutes - The VNR will be broadcast twice. For technical questions or problems, call WXXI teleport trouble at 585-258-0355.

It seems that the newer stores are - as most chains have been doing lately.
On the other hand, this may also be the area(s) they are opening in - for example they have opened only about 5 stores in NJ and most are in higher income areas so the stores are bigger to include lots of extras (like a full eating area - lots of prepared foods, cookware section, big floral section, large natural foods section etc.) that other areas might not need/want.
I believe their newest stores average 150,000 sq. feet...which is estimated to be only a little smaller than a Kmart/Walmart/Target store.

Other supermarkets have also been getting bigger to which is rediculous, but these Wegmans look like they took over a Wal-Mart.
They've been opening big stores in Buffalo and Rochester (their hometown) for about 7 or 8 years. I believe the first of the huge stores was opened in '98 when they replaced the Alberta Drive store with a new super sized location across the parking lot. It had well over 30 cash registers when it first opened, 20+ aisles, a full dining area on the second level, day care facilities, etc, etc...
That worked, sales increased, and the public loved it...so since then, they've been replacing old stores or opening new ones with most of these features and in many cases, similar large amounts of square footage. I think, at least in Buffalo, that the largest stores are around 110,000 SF...maybe they are opening up larger stores down in VA or NJ...but up here they are mostly around that size.
Price Chopper stores are getting bigger too. Also, when the Onieda Tops becomes Price Chopper, the older Price Chopper across the street, will become Wegmans.
Genuardi's are also getting bigger then they were say 10 years ago. Its pretty much because of Safeway.

Actually, I will have to disagree with you there. Safeway has added no stores to the Genuardi's chain since they bought it around 2001.
One Genuardis store closed only few weeks ago in Bensalem and was quickly converted into a Shop Rite.
I believe they do have a new store opening somewhere in late October...this will be the first store that I know of, that would be built/opened under Safeway's ownership.
I believe a few Genuardi's in Delaware were actually changed to the Safeway banner.
Safeway has really added nothing to Genuardi's. (besides really awful prices) Things like their Food Court, Sushi bars, etc...was all created by the Genuardi family. All of their stores were all remodeled or newly built when Safeway bought them, so Safeway didn't have to do much of anything.
The only thing they have added recently is Online shopping/grocery dilevery.
And by talking to people and other message boards, many people say Safeway runs very awful old, dirty, and overpriced stores in the places that they are most present (California, Maryland, Arizona, etc...) with the same awful pricing scheme they added to Genuardi's. (I think they have been adding parts of Genuardi's in their other stores though like Food Courts)
I hope Genuardi's is getting ready to compete with Wegman's, as they will be having a run for it's money.

They opened under Safeway's ownership, but it was the Genaurdi family who leased the land, hired the builders, etc... I think they were both already under construction when Safeway bought the chain. (Both these stores still have the "Family Markets" phrase on the carts, signs, etc...which was phased out when Safeway took over. I don't know about the Roslyn store though, but I am guessing the lease and everything was the work of the Genuardi family and not Safeway. (When did that store open?)
They just opened a 130,000 sf store in Maryland

Does anyone know what the Downingtown, PA, Wegmans used to be? It opened in about 2003, but I have no idea what it was before or how long the space was vacant.
MBZ321, the West Chester, PA, location was originally opened while Genuardi's was still an independent company, but it was relocated under Safeway. Anyway, you mentioned that certain Genuardi's locations in Delaware were rebranded to Safeway. Does that include any in Wilmington? There was one in Wilmington that was the only one I have ever seen converted.
I was told their stores are expensive. ARe their stores only in western new york. I hear their stores are big.
Wegman's is starting to expand into central PA. A new store in Mechanicsburg is supposed to open sometime next year (2007), and I'd expect they'll try to find a location on the east shore (Harrisburg area) as well.

The farthest East in NY I have seen them are in Syracuse. There are quite a few locations there. Rumor was that there was one coming to the Utica area, and that there were officials in the area scoping things out. Of course, they could have been checking out the Tops stores that were for sale.
The stores I have been in are very impressive. I love going into other Supermarkets and checking them out. I would say that Wegman's is by far my favorite one outside of the one that I work for.
Wegmans took over many former Hechinger stores, including the one in Downingtown, PA.
I grew up shopping at the local P&C (Producers and Consumers) grocery in Riverside, New York when round about my teen years along came the big and beautiful Wegmans on nearby Bridge Street in Corning.
Although most of my friends and their families shopped at the new store my folks stayed loyal to P&C. They claimed that the prices there were fairer and that they supported the local farmers.
I loved Wegmans though.. I remember being amazed that I could rent Super Nintendo games there.
On a separate note, I read recently that Wegmans' Chase Pitkin (Upstate NY alternative to Home Depot/Lowe's) has filed bankruptcy and has or will be closing all stores.
Night shot of the Wegmans on Taft Road in Syracuse.

Keep me informed about what it's like to work for them. Rumored that they were coming to my area, a couple of years ago. I said that if they did, I would apply there. By far, the most impressive Stores I have seen in our area.

The store doesnt actually open until October, but I begin training this week. I'll keep all of you informed. Let's just say my wage is well above any grocery and retail store in the area---plus the possibly of raises from there
Really....you're already training?? When the new Hannafords opened in my area, we didn't see most of the trainees until 1-1 1/2 months before the store opened. At least your training should be thorough.
Plus, that's the other thing. You gotta keep your wages competitive. I'm sure they have the advantage over other stores in that area. When I started, I was just above Minimum wage, and since then have gone quite a ways up the payscale.

oh well they do. and those ones are not 24 hours. the only one I went inside was the one in canandaigua ny. I wonder why Chase pankin went out, but they used lowe's and home depot as an EXCUSE, but there was probably more than that. like around most wegmans I found a vacant chase and and pankin.
Yes - The Rochester area is their home area, so they tend to have more (and older) stores - more like neighborhood stores in many places, whereas with the areas they are expanding into they tend to have a smaller number of stores in (often) higher income areas, which have the bigger format (more convenience stuff - in at least one NJ store, it's the whole right side from where you enter).
By the way - it's Chase-PITKIN - and as they were owned by Wegman's, that would explain why you find them together in many places (where space allowed).
Same example as found for Price Chopper. The older stores are found in the Captial District, and there are more of them. However, many of the old stores are starting to get updated.

LOL.
Anyways, Most of the Blame for Wegmans dumping Chase-Pitkin can indeed be put on Lowes and Home Depot. No sense continuing to patch a boat that you know is gonna sink anyways. In my opinion, it was a smart move on their part, and now can put their full concentration on their Grocery Business.

here is the wegmans in cheektowga ny (near buffalo) across the walden galleria.
this looks like the store i work at that just opened last month
wegmans in hunt valley maryland (20 minutes from baltimore) in this downtown like plaza.
There's a Wegman's in Clay, NY by the Great Northern Mall. I saw one too in Johnson City. It appears this market is a heavy servant of upstate NY territory. There was a vacancy next door (probably Petkins). Would've taken a picture, but my trip (then) was cut short.
Wegman's is the #2 Top 100 companies to work for and I find this fascinating. What I also find fascinating is that their stores don't look like they've evolved past 1976 with browns and that groovy logo.
ANOTHER thing I find fascinating: they have stores everywhere in the N.E. but Connecticut. I'm betting this has something to do with the Stop & Shop craze we have in this state. Someone end Shaw's so Wegman's has space to build!
Next time I go upstate, I'm gonna stroll into one of these stores to see what all the pleasing feedback is all about...

The Vacant store in Clay was a Chase-Pitkins. If you ever get a chance to take a stroll inside one of these stores, I recommend it. I'm a big Fan of my Supermarket Company, but Wegmans just is that much farther above. Just laid out well, Awesome Variety, Good Lighting, Welcoming, and huge.
As far as in NY State, the furthest East they come is the Syracuse Area. With Price Chopper in the Albany area, I don't expect them to go too much farther East.
I can't believe that this hasn't been mentioned yet, however, it doesn't surprise me either.
Wegmans is doing away with Cigarette Sales in all of their stores. What will this mean in terms of other Supermarkets, and how long before other Chains follow suit??
As soon as I saw Wegmans take the Initiative to pull Tobacco from their stores, I knew it would be a matter of time before they disappear in my store.
Here's the Wegman's in Liverpool, New York right down the road from Great Northern Mall and on the Clay line. Took these last May 2007.
I'm waiting for one of these to come to Connecticut!

Weird faux stain-glass on the Chase-Pitkin. Why do many Wegman's, especially newer ones, look as if they were built in the early 1980's?
That Former Chase Pitkin in Clay is now Ameriacn Sinagure Fiurnature and Comming Soon Best buy Wegmans will be moving out back of the plaza where the golfers dome comples use to be
I am not sure about this, but I hear that Wegams is coming to Massachuets(sic) somewhere in the Boston area.
can anyone find out about this??
This will surely change the landscape in MA if it happens.
There is a new Wegmans, new construction, being built right now in Malvern, PA. They already have a store in Downingtown (in a former Hechinger) not too far away, opened in 2003.
any news about Wegmans moving into MA within the next year??

IS THIS TRUE?
I know "someone" who may work at this chain...and he or she said MA is not on any kind of list of new store construction, although it has been talked about.
Here are upcoming locations in order if all goes well:
Lake Manassas, VA -Fall 2008
Fredricksburg, VA -Early 2009
Collegeville, PA -Spring 2009
Landover (Woodmore), MD -No date given..obviously at least a year or so away
Malvern, PA
Columbia, MD
Crofton, MD
Frederick, MD
Leesburg, VA
It was in one of the trade papers about Wegmans going into MA. They got approval for the site and everything, but who knows if the will build within the near future.
Something on Google News today said Wegmans is still interested in a MA store, but things are held up because they want a Liquor license for the store.
Anyway, Starting this Sunday, Wegmans is going to use a "new" (throwback to their original) logo:
That's what it was , the liquor lisc!! The what to have to be able to sell beer and wine or the hard stuff(?).
I knew I read about this somwhere a couple a months ago.
My question is if they Plan to build a store in MA, where would their product be coming from?? I don't know know where their DC's are located, but I'm sure that they are a large distance away from MA. Does the extra trucking make the MA market practical??
Wegmans would not move into MA, makes no sense, they are opening all their new stores in Maryland and Virginia, I live in NC and we know its only a matter of time before they show up here, they are going where the money is these days and it is the southeast
Mass has a lot of money in that state, and it would be geographicly(sic) prudent for them. Price Chopper moved into Connecticut and they have been pretty succesful. I think it is a go for the Mass location.
I wish they came to Long Island because their types of supermarkets are sorely needed here. They'd wreck S&S, Waldbaum's and King Kullen something fierce.
Wegmans is all set for approval to open there first store in Mass in the town of Westwood.
This post should be Wegmans!
Thanks!
They're opening in October in Northboro...
Mark my words..........................
Wegmans = Market Basket
Look at a picture of a store on Wegmans Website Then Compare it to
the new Chelsea Or Salem N.H. Market Basket
Scarry huh?
Don't forget Londonderry, too! No doubt Market Basket's new hard-charging development guy has studied Wegmans very carefully and is aware of their plans for New England and of emerging trends in grocery retailing. Very, very smart long-term planning on their part.
Lawsuit fiished, I'm Thinking merger!!!!!
God, I hope not! What we don't need is another family-owned chain to go the way of Shaw's. Although I've long thought that Market Basket and, say, Price Chopper would be a good geographical fit, their marketing and pricing philosophies are diametrically opposed and it would be a hellish integration process. I think Market Basket and Wegmans would be too much of a culture clash as well. Despite the newer, bigger Market Basket stores catering to the gourmet community, too many of their older stores are targeting a demographic interested in just the staples at rock-bottom prices.

I think Market Basket will survive just fine in the long run and doesn't need a suitor to do so not that it would be easy. I can't think of a single case where Wegmans entered a market and a rival ended up folding and I think if anything it gets other chains to get on their feet to compete. If anyone is at risk in Greater Boston, it would be Shaw's given the Wegmans-related hits Acme took in the Philadelphia area (and closed their last suburban Baltimore store preemptively) and the parallels between the two chains. The one SuperValu banner that's survived against Wegmans has been Shoppers in DC/Baltimore, and even then their model and mindset is a lot closer to Market Basket than Shaw's.
A better Price Chopper partner would be Big Y. There'd be some overlap in the Berkshires and Worcester (and some parts of Connecticut), but the two chains compliment each other just fine seeing that Price Chopper has no stores in the Springfield area and Big Y seems reluctant to expand eastward into New York and passed up a good chance to buy the former Grand Unions in the Albany area.
I also think Big Y and Price Chopper would be a better fit, although unless I'm mistaken Big Y's World Class Markets have more of a "foodie" image (I haven't been to a Big Y; can anyone back me up on this?) There's also the fine details of merging the two operations; for example, Price Chopper is 52% owned by its employees.
And while I'm addressing the Best & Brightest here, how do the new Market Baskets measure up to Wegmans in the foodie/gourmet department?

Big Y is a little "foodie"-r than Price Chopper, however adopting those elements would not hurt Price Chopper in the least especially since in most of their areas there is no real competition in the "foodie" category especially since they've kept Wegmans out of their territory outside the I-81 corridor and their territory is outside the Whole Foods/Trader Joe's purview.
A merged Price Chopper/Big Y, with the ability to tailor stores to local needs, could easily be the Giant Eagle of the Northeast.

Wegmans to open a store in Newton, MA (near The Mall at Chestnut Hill) that will be the prototype of a smaller urban-formatted location (http://blogs.wickedlocal.com/massmarkets/2011/12/05/wegmans-will-unveil-a-smaller-urban-format-when-it-opens-new-location-in-newton/#axzz1fhYMrkeq).
For perspective, Newton will be around 70,000 square feet. The recently opened Northborough location is twice that and the average Wegmans built 10 years ago was in the 110-125 range.

They too (kind of like Price Chopper) have some experience in operating smaller stores - I remember going to one in their home area of Rochester probably 8-10 years ago that was probably 1/2 the size of a "standard" one that they have been building in the newer areas like NJ, MD etc.
One interesting thing was that they carried, even in the smaller store (at least at that time) quite a few newspapers, including the one we usually get here in Albany, which it made it easier to keep up on local news.
I'm hearing the Westwood deal is off - apparently financing for the project fell through. Suddenly this "out of the blue" Newton announcement becomes more logical.

The expansion of Wegmans into Massachusetts has raised eyebrows, not only at competitors, but also with industry observers who wondered if they were stretching themselves too thin. Here is an indication that might indicate that they have a point: Wegmans is shutting down its very popular Northborough, MA Facebook page because they simply don't have enough staffing to keep on top of it:

I don't know to me they just seem overpriced and don't carry a lot of the products I buy at least they didn't the last time I was in their. Also i dislike the fact they have like 6 different restaurants inside the store they have their own pizza, chinese food, sushi and all at like 7 dollars a pound. Its just greedy to me it affects local restaurants who sell this things and specialize in just those things.
Price Chopper and Big Y have food Courts... so does Shaw's.
I don't think the closing of a Facebook page is that big of indicator..It was obviously made as more of a promotional tool, since Wegmans was new to the area. Now that they've been there a while, people can just go to their main Facebook page.
I used to work at Wegmans a couple years ago, and I wondered then if they were starting to become too big. Retail and management wise, it was as poorly run as any retail store. A lot of favoritism, a lot of waste, and stupid decisions in general (And from people that I know that still work at this store, it has become worse).
Price wise, they are awesome despite their expensive appearance. Regular grocery items are cheaper than any other chain in this area (ShopRite, Giant, etc.). Even their health and beauty items are comparable to Walmart. They were a big reason (IMO) why Safeway gave up on Genuardi's in PA/NJ.. When you get into the fancier items, it of course gets more expensive. The Food Court is also extensive and good (except for the Chinese food..blargh), but the stuff on the "per lb." bars are very expensive. (The salad bar at Wegmans is almost $7 a LB..$4.99/lb at Giant across the street (apparently mostly every other Giant is $5.99/lb though), and they look about the same if you are looking to make just a salad.
Does anyone think Wegman's will expand in CT?

Two brash fallout predictions from this:
1: The Fenway Shaw's right down the street is as good as dead.
2: Everyone mentions Whole Foods being competition but the real chain to get hurt with Wegmans expansion in the Boston area is Roche Bros. They're already taking it on the chin with the upcoming Burlington and Chestnut Hill locations and they've fought Wegmans over the on-again, off-again Westwood location. The next few years may be interesting for them to see if they adapt or end up being bought out by someone else.
Maybe Wegman's will buy out Shaw's sponsorship of The WEEI Redsox Radio Network. I'm not a Sox fan, but on occasion when trying to listen to something on WTIC (the Sox affiliate here in greater Hartford) I've caught parts of the game and have heard them say something to the effect of "The Shaw's Supermarket WEEI Redsox Radio Network."
An intriguing idea for a supermarket chain looking to ingratiate itself with Boston-area shoppers, but the Sox radio network has affiliates in all six New England states while Wegmans only has a presence in one. That may eventually change, of course, but Wegmans is relatively conservative in terms of the rate of expansion. If any other supermarket chain takes over the sponsorship more likely choices would be Hannaford or Market Basket, the latter of which is growing aggressively and already draws customers from states they do not already operate in.

I'd put Stop & Shop - official supermarket of the Red Sox - above any of them. Remember, while Shaw's sponsors the network itself one of the network's bigger advertisers is C&S (as "IGA/Best Yet").
Agreed on Stop & Shop, as they at least operate in four out of the six New England states (they closed their single location in Maine and never opened the single store they built in Vermont.) Giant Glass doesn't seem to care about having its ads air across the entire network even though they have only five locations, all of them in Massachusetts.

Damn, Best Yet, thats a name I haven't heard in awhile. Here in maryland we have lots of "family owned" stores all of which carrying one generic off brand selection of products. Best Yet used to be the generic products sold it all family owned stores in the maryland area into the early to mid 2000's when they all switched over to Shurfine. I just assumed they had switched names I had no idea Best Yet still existed.

There's way way way more money in NYC/LI, even if it costs more to get their foot in the door. I wouldn't really expect anything until they expand their presence in LI, the Hudson Valley and CT.
I wouldn't be surprised if that Brooklyn Navy Yard property is the most expensive they've ever spent money on, but once the store opens it'll be worth it.

At least along the line of the Thruway/90/Berkshire Spur, since they have to be going that way to the MA stores anyway, so it wouldn't be hard to add a stop en route.

That's my thinking too. If it's an attractive enough market for ShopRite to enter and for Golub to pour millions into its stores and rebanner them as Market 32 it has to be worth it for Wegmans to at least enter the more upscale suburbs. If they had gotten there earlier ShopRite might never have come back.
I love love love Wegmans. Although I live in Florida now, Wegmans is one of the things I will always miss from up north.
Their organic selection is huge, and being anti-GMO, that was a big thing for me. So many organic items at amazing prices that you can't get anywhere else. When I lived in Utica, NY, I drove the hour to DeWitt just to go and stock up at Wegmans. I could get almost everything I needed from there. Such a great store.
I have seen a Wegmans in person (the one in Cherry Hill, NJ); but have never been inside one.
Bear in mind, this location will only be 75,000 sq ft. Certainly that's large for a "regular" supermarket; but that's tiny for a Wegmans.
The locations in the Philadelphia region are all 130,000 - 150,000 st ft; and that isn't counting the freestanding liquor stores they operate in NJ.
Collegeville, King of Prussia, Malvern, and Montgomeryville are all almost 150,000 sq ft.

But probably a similar multiple when compared to many "City" supermarkets, since most city markets are smaller than what is found in other areas?
Example - Using the ones you mention that are almost 150,000 Sq. Ft., what is the size of another chain near those? Maybe 60,000 Sq. Ft.?
If so, then a 75,000 Sq. Ft. Wegmans would be comparable to a 30,000 Sq. Ft. "regular" market in the city area (in terms of being a similar percentage larger).
Oh, I hear what you're saying. I'm just mentioning this because it's likely this new Wegmans won't have all the same bells and whistles as a typical location.
So when people say "Ohhhh! Wegmans in Brooklyn!" it's really like "ohh, a scaled down, rinky dink Wegmans in Brooklyn."
Wegmans has announced plans for a store in Lancaster, PA.

It certainly makes sense to have another store in the Central PA market. Lancaster is also the region within Central PA where the Apple Store opened. It opened in Park City Center which appears not far from this location.

Clearly Wegmans isn't afraid of anyone if they aren't intimidated by Publix. The lesser players in the region (Food Lion, Bi-Lo, Piggly Wiggly, Lowe's) should be very worried.
While I love Wegmans (and wish them well) I'm disappointed to hear this. I would rather see them enter new markets adjacent to their existing markets (like Northern Delaware; Western PA; and Long Island) before they start expanding into additional states far from their base.
As always, just my opinion!

They're already in Virginia, so NC is just one state further to the south. Still, I'd like to see them come into Northern New England as well. As for Long Island, they're inching their way there with their upcoming Brooklyn store, but Long Island is a tough market to crack because of the distribution challenges.
They are also in Erie (multiple stores too!) but haven't opened anything an hour or two south towards Pittsburgh. You make a valid point about Brooklyn, but Westchester/Rockland County NY is also adjacent to their existing areas, plus CT.
Bottom line, they are going to do what they want, and they don't really care what we think.
I still can't believe they won't put a store in Delaware.
Then there's that whole long standing rumor (which may or may not have truth) about them not moving into areas where Price Chopper exists, which would cover parts of NY, CT, MA, VT, NH and PA. So far the overlaps are quite limited (around Syracuse where both meet and one or two scattered spots otherwise).

I think the Raleigh/Cary market has a lot of growth coming from people relocating from the Northeast. A lot of tech immigrants (H1B Indians) also, graduates from Duke/UNC moving there, and likely high income families similar to the NoVA region.
As for Delaware, Wegmans opened a new store in Glen Mills, PA which isn't far from the DE border. I suppose their might not be suitable sites in Delaware, but maybe I'm wrong.
They also haven't penetrated Southeast NJ (Atlantic City area) when maybe they could open a store in Atlantic County, but maybe not as many suitable sites. I think there is one site where a former Pathmark was located, across the Shore Mall (Harbor Square), that could be suitable, however. There is only a Big Lots in this otherwise very large and dead shopping center that could be redeveloped. But the area might be downscale for Wegmans.
The Raleigh Cary market will also be the first time Wegmans goes up against Publix. Should be interesting with Publix having 4 more stores planned in the area. With Wegmans also already looking at Raleigh and South Durham it would definitely see a major threat to Harris Teeter.

Price Chopper just installed their first non-family member as CEO, so there might be some movement regarding a sale of the chain, though the Golubs still insist nothing is going to change regarding ownership. If someone like Kroger or Albertsons buys them out then the notion of a "Gentlemen's Agreement" will be tested as never before.
I was always dubious of the "gentlemen's agreement" story regarding Wegmans and Golub. Especially since they do compete in the Syracuse and Binghamton region. My assumption was that Wegmans had more focus on bigger regions like Boston and the mid atlantic.
I don't really know how much truth there is to it either. It just seemed odd that, after Grand Union went bankrupt in the early 2000's, the whole Albany area has only Price Chopper and Hannaford (until the handful of ShopRite stores were built a few years ago), while an area like Pittsfield (just east and not any larger) has had 3 chains (Big Y, Stop & Shop and Price Chopper) for years. It always seemed that someone else should have come in and picked up some of the GU locations (as Stop & Shop did in NJ/southern NY, Tops did in the Adirondacks etc.).
Perhaps now with Nano tech bringing in high paying jobs and people from a diverse background you might see Wegmans perhaps in the Clifton Park-Saratoga Region. Apparently Price Chopper is thinking something is coming with their shift to a more wegmans like model with Market32. I do think they are looking in areas that can support multiple stores. In NC they have already publicly indicated additional stores in Raleigh and Durham will be coming in the future.
Wegman's and Publix will battle Kroger's in NC. I hope AholdDehleize are ready for the battle between two private companies, a well run public store and them...hope they are ready.

Wegmans first Washington DC (inside the actual city) store will open in 2021 or 2022. It's going to be a smaller than usual store (just like Brooklyn) but will still be huge by DC standards, at 80,000 sq ft. More info here:

Middletown (Monmouth County) NJ is getting a new Wegmans, as well. The 130,000 sq ft store should open in 2020:

I'm currently on vacation in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania. I had my friend Kyle take me to the Wegmans in KOP on the way back to my hotel. Granted it was after 9PM, I still don't see what all the fuss is over this supermarket.

You may have missed some of the draw, being that time of night.
Many people like them for the food services (stuff you can grab and eat then or take home for later) which are likely closing down by that time. Also popular for their larger selections of fresh foods, which tend not to be useful if you are only travelling in the area without a way to use them or keep them.
Not to say that their central store isn't good - in fact they often have better deals on many items (just sometimes less options of a particular item in this part), and many store branded items that are both less costly and still equal to (or better than) the name branded ones.
They get the reputation of being expensive from those fresh sections (which are offering items most stores don't have and more of them, so they do have to be a bit higher on some to cover items not sold and for those unusual items that are costly to acquire to begin with).
It's Brammy and I'm back on the board!
I just got back from King of Prussia, PA. I owed my friend Kyle lunch out, so we went to the in-store restaurant at the King of Prussia Wegmans (my idea believe it or not, despite my earlier opinion about Wegmans). The Pub by Wegmans is a nice restaurant. The service was good and so was the food. I got the Reuben Sandwich with Tuscan Fries. I would definitely go back in the future.
The first Wegmans in North Carolina opened this past Sunday. There were 3000 people waiting in line for the 7:00am grand opening and over 30,000 people passed through on opening day. The 104,000 SF store is slightly smaller that their typical format, it does not have a pharmacy. There are plans for additional stores planned for Cary(2 stores), Wake Forest, Holly Springs and Chapel Hill.

I think Wegman's and Publix will be fighting Harris Teeter in NC, I guess the loser will be Food Lion.
