I figured I would make this category because I see old Ames, Caldor, Kmart, etc... stuff all over the place where they are not suposed to be.
April 22 2005 - I have located an entire fleet of Ames carts at this Marden's store in Lewiston ME. Sorry for the blurry picture.
lets see I saw:
few months back I found two pristine Ames carts used for loading stuff a Jo-Ann Fabrics in Torrington Parkade (former ames location)
around last year I spotted Bradlees carts at O.S.J.L. in Avon/Canton
recently I've found Bradlees carts and Caldor carts at Bristol Centre Mall in one store a OLD OLD PRE-RAINBOW Caldor cart in an antique store their used for loading
MORE Bradlees and Caldor carts at O.S.J.L. in the mall
I took pics not digital though
the Caldor carts were the last recent ones before they went GOB!
however the Caldor name is scribbled over TO HIDE THE CALDOR NAME :(
I LIKE THE CALDOR CARTS THEY'RE SO COOL!LOL!:duh::insane::no::roll::rolleyes::o:kissyou::yup:;):saint::P:D:bouncing::):mrpink::tumble::bounce::bouncing::dizzy:
Nice pic Zayre! Heres a few we have sighted in the past.
Bourne, MA - While on vacation Chris spots one at the local Job Lot. After exploring the interior one is even found with it's Ames logo still on it.
East Providence, CT - Found being used for their own demise.
Southwick, MA - Found at an Ames turned Job Lot.
Cranston, RI - Now, are we shopping at Building 19 or Ames?
East Haven, CT - Whole fleet found all over the premises.
Holyoke, MA - Found at the adjacent Job Lot. Ames is not a Super Stop & Shop.
Naugatuck, CT - Also found being used at the neighboring Ocean State Job Lot.
Winsted, CT - Spotted behind former Ames, now a Tractor Supply Co. Took this one home.
East Hartford, CT - Spotted lurking in the shadows behind Ames.
Rocky Hill, CT - Found this band of carts from a tip sent via email. Here you can see them duking it out with a band of barbarian Wal-Mart carts invading their territory... Obviously the Ames carts are winning.
Meriden, CT - Found locked up in some sort of Ames prison.
At our local Salvation Army thrift store they use Hills carts
yes, I saw those at the one on Transit Road when I was there two years ago. I'll post a pic later..
One of the Albany area Salvation Army stores have a few Caldor carts, and two old school Kmart carts. They once had one from Loblaws as well.
The Bob's Discount in Skowhegan ME (former Ames) once had dozens of Caldor and Purity Supreme carts.
Now they have their own yellow carts, a few Hechinger carts and one Price Club cart as well.
Thanks to Marden's again: The Waterville store has a lot of Bradlees and Ames red carts. They also have blue carts from Paperama.
Does anybody know where these carts came from? The now Ocean State Job Lot Ames in Jewett City is using these as well as a few remaining Ames carts. For some reason they remind me of Caldors, but I've never seen them in a store. You can see more of them by clicking on the picture.

They look like carts found in a specialty store like Kitchen ETC. a pharmacy or Art & Crafts store. They look a lot like the ones found at Tjmaxx and Marshalls!

Sorry they look too new and too small to be Caldor's
They look like the honeycomb bar type of shopping cart that you can find a TJ MAXX or in some instances Kmart:)

BTW Caldors Carts are big dark brown ones that sport the Caldor logo minus the white coloring of the letters
and Caldor carts look old lol
sometimes the logo is hurridly scribbled out to hide the name like O.S.J.L does

it could be reminding you of Caldor's BECAUSE their colors were white grey and red BUT somehow their carts were BROWN!
I don't know why they problably took old Caldor carts and rebranded them with the new logo
ah the days when Caldors was is business they were great! lol:insane:
Here's an authentic Caldor cart at Marden's again, in Portland.

So far from what I hear on this site so far Marden's proudly shows the former store logos on the carts they don't try to cover up the name(usually unsuccesfully) like O.S J. L. does!
(Job Lot trying to claim that they have their own cool carts but its not really their stores cart its a former one's)
I like what Marden's does to show there were other stores BEFORE Wal-mart etc.
That one above found at Marden's is one of the ones you can find at the one Albany Salvation Army.
Also, that old Rainbow Caldor cart is one I've seen before. There was one like that at another one of Albany's Salvation Armys. I took the yellow seat cover off of it too(well, actually, my Dad did..hehe).
the Caldor in my town had the old carts too along with the newer ones
Where the Hills carts like the Ames carts? What i mean by that is.. were the made by the same company?

I don't know but it could be the same company. Many Ames and Bradlees carts had the same style. However, i never seen a Hills cart or even a picture of it ... !
I posted in the Venture thread, the OSJL in Manchester CT, (same plaza as a empty K-mart) has Grey Venture carts with all the original logos untouched..

THATS NICE BUT WHO ARE YOU?
Here's a picture of Globe carts i spotted at "Price Mart" in Exeter NH last year.
Globe closed in 1992 and was re-born as Price Mart later.
I saw an old Shop Rite cart in a Jo-Ann Fabrics store that was a Service Merchandise, in Waterbury
had no clue what it was doing there
I found an old Cornet cart being used as a trash can at a strip mall...

Cornet was a small department store similar to a TG&Y or a Sprouse-Reitz. I don't know if there are even any more around anymore!
No one knows. I can't remember what they looked like! Does anyone have any idea?
my guess is that they were red with the Hills Logo on them:question:

Thats nice post a thread about it can we get to shopping carts please?
what about those Hills carts?
No need to be rude. I was answering a question asked here. If I am not wanted to answer questions, I can certainly leave the boards.
Below is a picture of a Harts buggy. I got the little plastic clear thing that says Harts. This buggy is sooooo old!
and then here is a picture of a Big Bear Stores buggy!
I spotted an Old Navy cart down the street from where I work. This is interesting, because Old Navy is at least 10 miles from where I work! I walked down and pushed it into the hallway of my building. Several people had fun pushing it into different rooms, and we even gave someone a shopping cart ride. :insane: I finally pushed it back outside, though, because the people working on Monday would not likely have a sense of humor about a stray shopping cart in the hall.
Spotted a MacFrugal's cart today:
?
when i was comming out of my friends apprement bulding this old crazy looking lady had a Caldor cart with her i wannted to steal it from her but i was scred she might do something to me lol
I spotted a Jamesway cart outside and Eckerd with a bunch of Eckerd carts. :o
Ames carts are at the Ocean State Job Lot in Berlin CT. I'm guessing these Ames carts are either from the Newington, Middletown, or Meriden Ames.

I also tracked down some Clover carts at a small Asian shop I went to a few times. Also at a dollar store I know, they had carts with stickers on them that said Ames. They were red carts. So I peeled off the Ames sticker on one of them and it said Hills underneth. :)

Yes. These ones were all red. Not like Bradlees carts though. They were also red, but darker.
OMG YOU'VE FOUND OUT WHAT THE HILLS CARTS LOOKED LIKE!!!!!!!!
Shopping cart sighting at Building19 in Nashua. Carts from Home Quarters and Caldor
Right when Ames first went out, I saw their carts in a few places. Like at Big Lots across the road, I even saw them a little ways down the road at Kroger. Some had been pushed off over the bank and turned over. But even today, I still them inside Magic Mart where the stockers use them to haul things in and out from the back.
was at a flea market today and spotted a bunch of green Jamesway carts, some Bradlees baskets in a pet store, and an old Nichols cart (not interesting...just said Nichols on a yellow handlebar on a metal cart). They also had some giant orange carts, but the names were all blured out...anyone may know what store used these? Jamesway maybe?
I didn't spot any Clover carts like I did last time I went though :(
There was also some big black carts like Caldor's but they said "Snyders" on them...I'm guessing they are from a local market or something.
And there were many "Ames" look-a-like green carts, but the handle bars all said "Value Time" or something like that on them.
The Big Kmart store in Salem NH has:
1- "Super Kmart" carts,
2- "Super Kmart centers" carts
3- Regular Kmart carts (like the picture)
4- red carts with a Kmart logo over the real store logo.
It's really funny but sad at the same time... seeing how Kmart can't have standards and closed Super Kmarts
(probably sent "Super Kmart" carts at the Salem store because they had the very old 1980's carts !!)
At my local Trust Worthy hardware store, they've got 2 old True Value carts, a Superx Drugs (who are they?) cart, and all Do it Center handbaskets. I spotted a really cool blue cart one time. Its name was similar to Plato's Closet, but I forget what it was.
Update! I visited hancock Fabrics otday, and saw some treasures! I saw regular hancock carts, but also ones exactly like them, except the print was silver, not gold, and read "Fabric Warehouse". I sneaked in the stockroom to use their restroom, and guess what I saw? 3 old Kroger carts and......(drum rolling)........
A BIG BEAR CART! I've never seen another!
I have wondered what happened to the big bear carts... there were so many... it's like they have disappeared off the face of the earth!
Well, the only Big Bear I've ever seen, and yes it is vacant, is in Hurricane, WV. If you go to the store locator and go to the pictures of the Hurricane, WV Ames, it is actually in the same plaza as the Big Bear. Maybe Marden's can help.:insane:
Here's the miscellaneous Shopping Cart Sightings (http://ccsu.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2009416&l=a9b8c&id=48807574) album I've compiled. There are tons of Bradlees carts in my area as you'll see...
If you want to see more carts I've encountered, check out my other albums in my signature which feature (mostly) Ames carts from former Ames sites. Enjoy!
Fred Meyer cart
UPDATE!! I was at Big Lots yesterday, and I saw a HomeGoods cart (there used to be one next to it, which is now a Gabriel bros. I was pushing a cart that was an Odd Lots-only cart! I also saw some Big Lots/Odd Lots handbaskets. Also, I saw some mystery carts which were ames green, and had the same design as Ames had on their red carts! Why they're not Ames: Our ames closed 15 years ago! But the pinnacle of the trip: I saw some black carts with orange handles. I saw stripes on the side under the Big Lots! sticker. Someone pulled down the inside sticker, revealing:
YOU ARE OUR #1 PRIORITY. THANK YOU FOR SHOPPING AT............
VENTURE!
I slapped myself, literally! Also had a fleet of Targets. My Goodwill uses old Meijer carts, with the old logo.
i spotted a G.C. Murphy's cart. A first for me!
Seriously? That's awesome! Where did you see it and what did it look like? I'm not trying to interrogate you or anything, just curious.
it looked like a smaller version of an Ames cart. It was orange and it said "G.C. Murphy's" on it. It was old school. I am going to try and snap a picture of it in the coming days!
That's weird. I saw an old, rusty orange Rehrig cart at my local Trust Worthy hardware store. There was black spraypaint over the nameplate sections, like something had been there. Were Ames' carts made by Rehrig?
Here's a brown Caldor cart I found today junked beside some Bradlees carts on Route 6 in Bristol, Connecticut.
This brown-colored Caldor cart reminds me of the ones our Caldor used to have. This was probably one from the later rainbow-era circa mid 1980's.
Here's the logo with evidence of sticker residue.
This Caldor cart probably was junked by the nearby Ocean State Job Lot. The surrounding (Bradlees) carts were partially scarred from once being used by them.
The handle with a partially filed away "Caldor" eched across the bar.
Shopping carts from The BigParty, Paperama and Bradlees located near Marden's (former Ames) in the Maine Coast Mall in Ellsworth, ME.
About The Big Party, does anyone know anything about this chain? Because I have seen old carts and baskets for them everywhere. They had a store near me which opened in 1995 in Doylestown, PA, and they closed around 4 years later.
Here's a Lechmere cart I spotted at a Salvation Army while on vacation in Buzzards Bay, Cape Cod not too long ago! They also had a Ames turned OSJL turned Salvation Army cart as well... Hehehe.
I spotted a 60's or 70's Safeway cart in a parking lot over the weekend. It was quite small -- dinky compared to today's grocery store carts!
Here is a closeup of the "S" logo that is part of the wire of the shopping cart. Safeway did this up until the mid 1980's, making their shopping carts very distinctive!
Wow, that is really cool! I've never seen that on a shopping cart before!

The Building 19 in Pawtucket RI has a bunch of Child World carts as well as Home Depot, some Bradlees, couple of Caldor's and BJ's Wholesale. I hate the practice of scratching off the names and breaking them off the handles so the other carts are hard to tell where they came from.

I agree, OSJL seems notorious for scratching them off and whatnot... Looks like they use a dremel or something. The Building 19/Former Ames in Cranston, RI has a fleet of Ames carts with no debadging whatsoever! It was pretty nice to see them!:yup:
Update: I have spotted a blue cart that is from a regional clothing store called Van Lunen's at my Hader Hdwe. Also, I have an exciting story from Salvation Army. They had carts from Thriftway, some metal with "Thriftway" on the handle, some metal with "Fo od Thriftway Drug" on the handle. There were also ones from Save-A-Lot, Central Hardware, Food Town, Walgreens, Big Lots/Odd lots, and two from Kroger. Also, I paid a visit to Big Lots and found a T.J. Maxx cart in front, not covered up or anything, with nasty McDonald's stuff in it. But it makes sense, for there is a TJ Maxx right up the hill. Then my mom thinks that they've been replaced by Big Lots in the building 10 years ago!

Spotted a Family Dollar cart in a flea market a few weeks ago, along with a Kroger cart and some other old metal cart. While I was in a junkyard, I saw an old tiny Kroger cart. My sister's friend has a cart from Family Dollar and another cart (I don't know where its from). Just today in Eastgate mall in $1 Land, I saw a Jewel-Osco basket and a few other baskets from unknown stores.
Today I saw MacFrugal's, Service Merchandise, and Ames cart at the Florence, KY 99Center.

The BIG PARTY stores that didn't close changed their name to I-PARTY. My supervisor at Shaw's used to send me there to buy decorations. It's a couple doors down from Shaws. Like to see how they survive without Shaws.

URGENT UPDATE!! On a trip yesterday to the Florence store, I found that they were nowhere to be seen...I also saw a dead hulk with a 99Center labelscar!!!:barf::boring::(:duh::exorcist: I hope some crappy Odd Big Lots didn't take them and slap their stupid stickers on precious old logos!
Wow! You guys have been busy and found some great carts from wonderful shopping days of old. Before I started getting into retail history, I never even gave a thought as to what a store (or chain) does with their shopping carts. In the old days, you would assume that one store would just move them to another in their chain. But, what happens to all those carts when the store goes out of business? Are they all shipped somewhere to be bought by another chain or does the holding company sell them as part of a way to make up for any losses?
These are weird but interesting (to me) questions that I don't think most people ever think about!
:insane: :insane: :insane:
I don't think that I have seen one of those all metal carts since the 70's!! I'm not sure when they were used, but it was back in the day when a store's cart was distinctive and was as much a trademark of the store as anything else.
I do have to wonder where that cart has been all this time and why it's in such good shape considering how old it is!
:o :o
I saw a bunch of Hills and Wal-Mart "Discount City" carts at an Ollie's outside of Baltimore, Maryland. How long has it been since Wal-Mart has been "Discount City"?
I didnt have a camera with me (and i still dont know how to post pics on message boards anyway) but the piggly wiggly in Brookhaven MS has a ton of carts from a store called "saverite". The carts just came in recently, beforehand they were using regular PW carts. Also, i saw a kroger cart outside a best buy in Jackson.

I think Wal-Mart still operated some "Discount City" stores in 1984, but it was "Discount City" in the beginning.
My local Wal-Mart (now temporarily closed for a "mini-Supercenter" remodel) opened in 1997 with the "Discount City" carts.

all the "re-models" of wal-marts suck. Wood fake floors and all.
The new Ocean State job lot here in Valatie has quite a few plain gray carts (with red boxes where the name should be) and (not suprisingly) some larger green former Grand Union carts (I say not suprisingly as this store was a Grand Union until closing a year-two ago when Hannaford opened up the street).
They did manage to change the handle part of the green carts, which had the GU name and now has their name (actually inscribed, not just stuck on or over, so it appears they replaced that whole piece of plastic).

The funny thing is, this 1997-era store was FULLY remodeled about 2 years ago with all the hardwood floors, dark paint, new gray carts, a Subway, etc. It looked better than it did before, but the lighting was very dim. The store closed again in May to become a Supercenter, but the last time I past it, nothing has been done. (The local Kmart is doing excellent business because the next nearest Walmart is many miles away)
