Post by: Retail Fan+ (Justin Hill) on April 27, 2016, 10:35:25 PM
The Japanese version of Super Mario Bros. 2 (Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels), only available on the Famicom Disk System (until the Super Mario All-Stars release), was deemed too hard for international players at the time it was released in 1986:

Yume Kojou: Doki Doki Panic (English: Dream Factory: Heartbeat Panic), the Japanese Famicom Disk System game that would become the international version of Super Mario Bros. 2. Doki Doki Panic was meant to be a tie-in with the Dream Factory '87 event on Fuji TV, and was created by the same team as both versions of Super Mario Bros. 2:

Our Super Mario Bros. 2, released in 1988, which we all remember, was re-skinned from Doki Doki Panic, the B-button run (a Mario trademarked move) was added, the international Super Mario Bros. 2 was later renamed Super Mario USA when released in Japan in 1992:

Super Mario Advance was an upgraded version of Super Mario Bros. 2/Super Mario USA that was released as the launch title for the Game Boy Advance. The game was given a score counter, one of the things not found in the original game.
