Great Asbury photos - I have a few notes for them:

The shot - Another old Building (which is next to the Casino) was a power plant years ago.
Casino - The plan is to tear down the part of the building which is over the sand (in the photo it's to the left of the Boardwalk) and reconstruct it historically similar to match.  The rest of the building (over the boardwalk and out to the street) will be restored.
The shot of the pavillions (buildings along the Boardwalk) - a couple years ago some of those looked just as bad as the other buildings, so they have done a good renovation on the one with the green awnings.
People - Again, a couple years back you wouldn't have seen more than 4 or 5 people in any of the boardwalk shots.
Lastly - The "new" hotel in the one shot is the Empress - it isn't new (was probably one of the newer buildings in town - which still makes it 50's/60's vintage) but has been completely remodeled.

Now, back to topic - Here's an abandoned house just off Route 7 in Latham (behind the former Edwards store site - now medical buildings)

store215

The town next to me has so many empty spaces :(

*A closed Eckerd, later a dollar store, now empty
*Empty Silo Appliances (a 2-floor store) --> i goldberg --> some independent furniture store, now empty
*Empty Coconuts Music store, closed a month or two ago
*Empty Caldor/Ames/Burlington Coat Factory (closed a year or two back)
^all the above are in the same shopping center too
:o

*An empty OfficeMax (closed in March, 2004)
*An empty Pathmark (closed in January)
*An empty Rickel Hardware (pathmark owned)-->Staples, closed 3 weeks ago.

Plus some smaller shops in the many shopping centers

Both of these are in Hudson (Greenport) on Route 9 - The first two pictures are right next to the McDonald's (in the 2nd you can see a piece of their parking lot) - the building housed several things over the years, I just happen to remember the cleaners.  There was a fire there about, I'd say 10 years(maybe a couple more) ago, and since the building has sat as you see it.  I don't know why the car and dumpster are there - there aren't any other buildings in front of it (it sits back a bit from the road) and I'm sure no one is using either building.

The 3rd shot is a former single screen theatre, which looks like it sits in the middle of nowhere - it doesn't really as to the left was the site of the original Hudson Jamesway/Price Chopper complex and to the left the original Hudson McDonald's (now a church after being an Italian restaurant that was always getting bomb threats!).  The theater has been closed for a good 10-12 years, but was open after the rest of the buildings had been vacated.

BillyGr

The first shot is a former Agway-style farm supply store on Route 9 in Southern Columbia County (never knew why it was considered Germantown Co-op as G'Town is more along Route 9G, but anyway...)

The 2nd (large) photo is old gas pumps (and part of a small building behind them) also on Route 9 - in that area there are at least 3 similar buildings, however this is the only one that has the pumps as well.

The mini photo stuck in is the cold storage warehouse in Albany (just off I-787).

The next 3 shots are all on Route 23B coming into Hudson from Route 9H.  The big and lefthand small ones are parts of a former plant property (a part is still used today by ADM) - this property stretches to the Claverack Creek (if anyone is in/familiar with the area, that's the creek where there was a landslide a month or two ago - there was a previous slide that swallowed one of the buildings on the plant property many years ago).  The 3rd is a house that sits on the "point" where 23B bears right and a street goes left toward Columbia Memorial Hospital.

The last two are of a building labelled "Lindy's Lunch" - this is on Route 9W South of Port Ewen, NY (which is just south of Kingston) - it has been abandoned for (I'm guessing here) a minimum of 20 years (I never remember seeing it in use, and it seems the first time I did see it it was already in a deteriorating state).

BillyGr

This is a (kind of) abandoned building on Route 9W/32 south of the village - not sure what it was in the past, though it does appear that someone has been working on it recently.

Ameskid

Going back to gas stations...
We have one abandoned BP that is one of the new ones, with the curved side of the roof over the pumps, an abandoned Marathon which still has the signs and is in the process of being gutted and has no pumps or pump-roof, another abandoned Marathon, which only has the building and entrances (no pumps), an abandoned Shell which is vacant, and yet another abandoned Marathon, which has turned into a BMW service center, and may be the only remaining one around here on which you can see the slogan "best in the long run".

That Caldor in Newington, CT is going to be a Stew Lenoards. They hope to open in Januray 2007.  As for abanadoned Gas Stations there's an abandoned one on Riverside Avenue in Bristol that the city keeps talking about buying. I think there's one abandoned gas station in Southignton. Over in the area of Meriden Avenue.

Here is an abandoned former IGA supermarket.  It closed a year ago.  It was a very old and small market.  It used to have an entrance in front of the building.  The modern one was added in the 90's.  The owner started to strip the building but went bankrupt !!

Mobil is still around, they never changed their name to lukoil. Lukoil bought all the locations in NJ, NY and PA.

We have a Lukoil on Route 229 in Bristol, CT next to Exxon. It used to be a Texaco.

Originally it was Karl's Mobil. (Gas Station and repair place). Karl retired and shut the place down. It was ripped down and replaced with the Texaco Station.

Ameskid

I didn't know Lukoil bought Mobil; last I heard about Lukoil is that they were rebranding Getty stations to Lukoil.

They didn't. They just bought a bunch of Mobil locations, not the company itself.

I got lots of pictures of Asbury Park, as I stayed in Ocean Grove for the past week.  I found out that the building to your left as you enter the Casino was a black-run concession stand.  And yes, they tore down the part of the Casino on the sand.  They have also torn down that arcade building with the creepy clown face and built a cafe meant to replicate it--complete with the face--on the same location.

Lukoil only bought the PA NJ & NY Mobil locations from ExxonMobil.  ExxonMobil, as a result of there merger, had to sell or rebrand all the Mobil stations on the East Coast to Exxon, and sell or rebrand all the Exxon stations on the West Coast to Mobil.

Thank you!

A tannery, basically, is a place where leather is made.

Sadly, we can now add Value City Department stores to the list of those that have come and gone.  Can anyone give a someone detailed list of department stores that have gone under since the 1980's??  :huh:

Just happened to spot this post, and wanted to add:

Actually, the building that now has the clown face (AKA Tillie) IS a bar (Wonder Bar), but that is NOT the site of the original Palace (the arcade building), rather a tribute to it.

The Palace building was across a couple streets from the Casino, just behind and to the left (looking from the Boardwalk) of the Empress Hotel.

Most of the area by the Casino had been paved and turned into a parking lot as of last summer (this had been an empty triangular lot which was between the Palace and Casino), and between that and the fact they re-routed the streets a bit - the one that runs along the lake no longer goes right in front of the Casino, rather you have to cut over in front of where the Palace was (Kingsley St) - makes it harder to place lots exactly.
