After hearing a story about kids being left in a store at a Rochester, NY area mall, I figure that we need to discuss about parental supervision/escort at malls.

The mall is not a daycare center. parents can't leave their kids in store at the mall alone while the parents go off elsewhere in  the mall.

Hell a buddy of mine used to work at a Walmart. He told me it wasn't uncommon for parents to drop their kids in the toy department  on a Saturday, leave the store, and come back 2 or 3 hours later.

OTHER malls have a 4 pm and later later in the week of youths under a certain age.

Malls should have hours where they don't allow youths under a certain age to be in the mall at all. So that people can shop without hearing whiny kids or teenage riff-raffs hanging out at the mall. But that youth ban might make some family oriented businesses leave the mall.

I am against putting restrictions on kids at a shopping mall or any other public place. What we need to do instead is teach our kids to follow the rules.

Agreed, can you imagine an adults only mall where nobody under 18 is allowed at the mall at all?

I also agree with this, I remember when I was a teenager the mall by my girlfriends house had a stupid rule of no one under 18 without a parent after 6pm on a weekend and while they never bothered us they kicked out groups of 3+ people. The worst part is every time they kicked kids out they weren't bothering anyone and it's just stupid you're going to kick a 17 year old out of a mall for what? Even as a adult that still pisses me off.

The mall can't just kick out teens that aren't misbehaving just because their parents aren't anywhere in sight of the teens. I could see something like youth ban or  parental escort at more higher end malls that cater to the higher income adults who want to shop without annoying minors around.

I'm also tired of those people who think "one bad apple spoils the bunch." Something's got to change.

The whole restrictions on minors at the mall is why malls are catering less to teenagers and more to adults and families with children under 12.

I just hope it doesn't get worse with all the violence going on in certain parts of the country...

Ditto, malls are/were like places where fights among teens and adults occur and mall security think that a parental escort policy for minors as going to stop the violence at malls.

The violence that goes on in shopping malls includes the occasional food court brawl, or a fight over the last piece of merchandise in one of the stores. It's violence like that that is becoming a headache for the mall cops that patrol the shopping mall on a daily basis.

And that is one of the reasons for malls to get rid of food courts and to beef up security and restricting minors at the mall.

I was just thinking about this one question, was the enclosed mall invented as a place for teenagers to get away from their parents?

In my experience malls that have adopted this policy had issues that went beyond
typical teen mischief.  They were having serious gang problems which in some cases
became violent, and scared a lot of shoppers away from even coming to the mall.

Gang activity was one of the things which started Century III Mall on it's long slide
to oblivion.  The mall is relatively close to some tough former steel towns like Homestead,
McKeesport and Clairton.  Gangs were coming to the mall and getting into confrontations
with each other, which were scaring away shoppers from other neighborhoods.  While the
mall never adopted a unaccompanied minors policy, they did prevail on county officials
to reroute bus lines originating in those communities away from the mall.  That was a
controversial move, but it did seem to buy them about a decade of relative peace.

When my daughter lived in Toledo the Franklin Park Mall adopted a minors policy
after a gang shooting which resulted in a fatality.

Back in the 80's malls were actually trying to draw teens as they would spend a lot of
money in the clothing shops, record stores and the food court.
