They are either insane, or else this list is totally false.

Maine Mall, Westfield Trumbull, Palisades, Quaker Bridge, and Park City are all A malls! Several of these malls contain the only JCPenney store in an hour's radius (or more).

Here's a little more background on the criteria used to come up with the list. The stores listed do less business than the JCP average and/or would require significant investment to bring them up to standard. Of course, there's no substitute for an actual list from JCP itself.

Edit: This Portland Press Herald says the Maine Mall location carries a $235M loan balance, the fourth-highest of all the stores on the list

Here's a little more info about the financial implications of the store closures

Connecticut is a small state. According to directions on Google it's about 13 miles from the Trumbull Penney's to the one at the Connecticut Post Mall in Milford.

That being said however another analyst said that the Trumbull Macy's was in danger of closing and it didn't.

And by the way where I live in Southington is approximately a 10 mile drive to 3 Penney's stores until they shut down the one in Meriden. (The others being Westfarms and Brass Mill).

I am surprised Century III did not make the list.
Aside from Penney's the rest of that place is a tomb.

Sorry to hear about Defiance Mall in Ohio.   Used to hang-out there
when I lived in the area.

I wonder how well the Westfarms JCPenney does? They appear to be doing decent business. Walking in the mall, you see many more JCPenney bags than anything else. That's the last store I can buy good quality clothes for cheap. Plus, they've been there for 43 years. It has a nostalgic presence. One of the only places left I went as a kid.

I call shenanigans on that list. Great Northern's undergone massive renovations all over in the past several years, and JCPenney was likely included in the recent restructuring of the entire mall. Midway Mall in Elyria, OTOH, is a dying retail area and, if ANY JCP store should be on a closing list, it's that one. Dillard's left back in 2007, and Macy's left last year. Sears is barely holding on as it stands.

giantsfan2016

Yeah. I also can't believe Torrington, Connecticut isn't on that list. It's in a strip mall and it's about the size of a TJ MAXX or Marshall's - in the neighborhood of 30,000 square feet.

Quaker Bridge and Oxford Valley are safe - these malls are 14 miles from each other. But King of Prussia is slated to close! That to me is interesting. Is it high rent at King of Prussia or just way too much competition? It seems JCPenney's footprint just west of Philadelphia will be woefully inadequate. I don't think Montgomery Mall is central or destinational enough to accommodate what was a footprint of four other stores: Exton, Granite Run, King of Prussia and Willow Grove, along with Philly residents that frequent KoP by bus.

It's not surprising the Philadelphia Mills site is closing, since it was a small site. I assume NE Philly residents that want to go to JCP can find JCP still at Oxford Valley or Cherry Hill. It's just Philly proper and west of Philly has barely no JCP footprint, except for Montgomery which is quite out there and not a destinational mall.

It's beyond right-sizing. It's pretty much to a point that JCP could bail out of the Philly market.

Palisades in on both lists as well - not sure about others?

Easton, MD is my nearest store; it's a smaller location in a shopping center but well run. That's an upscale area with lots of retirees & steady retail growth. Kohl's is next door, though, with a Peebles across the street.
