Who took that picture?

This Jamesway opened in 1973 as a Woolco. It was one of the 1991 Jamesway closures. Around 1992, it was torn down for a Price Club wholesale club. When Costco bought Price Club, it closed. The original Wal-Mart in New Britain, CT was a Price Club. It was in a weird location.

The Woolco in Claymont, DE opened in 1969. It was later a Jamesway and Home Depot.

Those photos are awesome dude! The third one really gives you a good look at the interior, too.

BTW, I just checked out that Facebook group and one of the photos on there shows Joseph Ettore at the Seaville, NJ one (now subdivided between Peebles, Dollar General, and a gym).

Awesome pictures, it's nice to take a little trip into the past through old pictures, so cool! Grin

Wish I could find old pictures the the Naugatuck Valley Mall complete with sign and the shopping plaza that was across the street. Also it be cool to see the grand opening picture of the Caldor that was there as well.

Here's the Dutchess Mall Jamesway when it was a May's department store. Taken from a 1977 commercial.

Why did Jamesway go under (yet Kmart still exists)? It seems they at least in the 80's had much more modern and upscale stores than Kmart, not to mention Walmart, and I have to admit, Ames. They also seemed to be a step above Bradlees, and just slightly less upscale than Caldor.

Maybe just the fact that Kmart was a larger chain overall and had more funds (and backing) to stick around then did most of the smaller chains?
Also that one or two stores not doing well would impact them less with more stores overall.

Jamesway was farrrr from being that upscale and by the time they closed they had only 92 stores thats alot less then what they had in 1990 it faced significant losses during its last years in business. Also Kmart hasn't been doing so well for along time and it too will soon will end someday.

Bradless and Caldor were much nicer stores

What caused the fire at the Jamesway in Monroe NY in 1990? Could it have been arson?

Also, I was wondering... did the Jamesway in Massena NY close in 1995 with the rest of the chain? Part of it later was a Fay's drugstore, so I'm thinking it had to have closed in the very early 90's. Fay's did exist until 1997, when Eckerd bought it and renamed the stores, but while Thrift Drug (a drugstore division of JCPenney that was absorbed by Eckerd at the same time) was opening new stores well into 1996, I don't know if Fay's was opening stores that late towards the end. They did however open at the former A&P site in Lehighton PA, and that A&P closed in 1993.

Also when did the Rite Aid at this Jamesway/Fay's/Eckerd site close? Has it become any new tenants? And on the same subject what did the Big Lots next door used to be? It appears to have been Big Lots for a long time, since at least 2000 (with the old logo that matched the Odd Lots logo, implying the store opened before Big Lots renamed all their stores Big Lots, including Odd Lots along with the MacFrugal's and Pic N Save chains Big Lots bought sometime in the 90's).

The origin of the fire was detemined to be in the pool chemical area of the store. this store i believe was rebuilt afterwords and i think its now a large shoprite now

Is the Jamesway farm equipment company (which has a website at jamesway.com!) related to Jamesway stores somehow?

Check this out...a flea market has opened up in the former Jamesway in Fishkill, New York...and they left Jamesway decor, including the logo, on the walls!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rQ1GXZIG1xg
http://dutchessmarketplace.com/our-vendors/ (you can see the decor and logo clearer in the photos on this site)

No, it was originally a J.W. May's department store. It was attached to a mall; which was demolished several years ago and replaced with a Home Depot.

The Grant City near me became a K-mart after Grants went under.
Then the K-mart relocated and became a Super K-mart (which was recently closed and demolished)

The old Grant City is now divided between Giant Eagle and Advance Auto Parts.

They finally made it back (they had the flea market in the other end of the mall - a former Service Merchandise - before it was demolished).  If you go to the dutchessmarketplace.com link (check the about us tab) it gives more details about both the former market and the former occupants of the store in question.

from what i know the old Service Merchandise is still standing they didn't tear it down along with the rest of the mall.
Im also amazed at how well kept the jamesway looks after being closed for almost 20 years
