It looks like Rite Aid's selling most of their stores in New England to Walgreens, keeping only a few in each state; they've had trouble in that area in the past.  In 1995 Rite Aid left MA and RI entirely when they sold those stores to Brooks, then regained them when they acquired Brooks in 2007.

Coupons in the News has a running count of stores pre-and post-sale. Maine, for example, goes from 79 to 1 (presumably a New Hampshire border town, the Granite State being largely unaffected by the sale.)

Pennsylvania is only losing 2 stores, Delaware, California, and Michigan losing none.  New Jersey and New York is the big losers, with NJ losing 151 stores, and NY losing 456 stores

NY is quite understandable - just doing a quick search using our zip code (which is a bit south of Albany) yields 12 Walgreens within a 50 mile radius and 20 Rite Aids in a 21 mile radius, so quite a bit of difference there.

On the other hand, out of the 12 Walgreens, 8 I know where they are and 6 of those 8 have an existing Rite Aid close by (4 of the 6 are opposite corners of the same intersection and one is a town with no CVS so those are the only 2 pharmacy options) - so it could easily be some of those stores that would stay as Rite Aid for either lack of interest or for competitive issues.

Similar situations likely exist in other parts of the state as well.

Also potentially a fair number of Rite Aid stores in NYC itself, where Walgreens has a large presence after buying Duane Reade and those (or many of them) might remain Rite Aid.
