Shopko Hometown, Fred's or Rose's would make great replacements for ALCO in these small communities.

I worked with a manager at Ames who had been recruited away from ALCO.
Sounds like they were Ames stores at 2/3 scale located across Kansas, Nebraska, etc.

Former ALCO in Brookville, Indiana.  I'm pretty sure this was the closest store to the Cincinnati area, about 30-45 minutes away from the city.

Shopko converted 20 ALCO locations to Shopko Hometown in 2015.

Bomgaars converted 12 ALCO locations to Bomgaars stores in 2015.

Their Abilene, Kansas distribution center was acquired by Orscheln Farm & Home.

The rest of the chain was absorbed by various entities.
