How Ames would have fared in today's retail world?

Even if Ames would have been in a better shape in 2002, would they even have survived the economic crisis or beyond?

They're last bankruptcy was the result of them buying the trouble Hills chain. I believe if they had never bough Hills they would not have gone bankrupt (again) and I think they would be able to survive just fine with Target and Walmart. And perhaps if they were still around they would be able to take over some (not all) closed KMART locations.

Or they could've bought out KMART in 2005 instead of KMART buying Sears and both AMES and KMART would've went under.
