Are you saying specifically "Buffalo,NY" or "Western NY"? If western NY, then the 17 western counties?

Definitely need to add A&P to grocery stores either way :)

I was referring to the retail establishments that had or have a presence in the core Buffalo/WNY area (the counties that are in red)

Got it. A&P had numerous stores in the Buffalo/Niagara Falls area. They were a major presense in the Buffalo area until 1975, when they pulled out of the area. I believe Super Duper bought a lot of their old stores....

^O.K. I got it, I wasn't sure if A&P had presence in Buffalo, NY/WNY.

Stork of The Weak

Was the Advance Auto Parts in Catskill an A&P at one time? It has the look of one that may have had the front facade "squared off" around the time the A&P logo changed in 1976 to the same basic logo they use today (which to be fair has changed twice in the past 38 years).

Not that this is quite Western NY (quite Eastern, in fact :)), but the same question was asked at this link:

http://www.city-data.com/forum/new-york/1907305-great-american-supermarket-catskill.html

It was (as the link states) a Great American at one point, but may have been A&P also prior to that. I thought that it was mentioned somewhere, but couldn't find any reference in either the A&P or Great American posts.

Edit - I knew I had seen it somewhere - it's on the Groceteria Board at this link:
http://www.groceteria.com/board/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=2684&hilit=Catskill+A%26amp%3Bamp%3BP&start=15

See Ephrata1966's post on Nov 28 2010 with a list of stores

Too bad this post isn't for NY in general - then it could be one of only a couple where Howard Johnsons could be listed and not marked defunct!

Bradlees never made it over here, did they? They stayed downstate I believe.

Did Caldor have any locations here?

Also, Gold Circle was a pretty big player in the discount store realm back in the day, before they folded sometime in the 1980s i think. If you mention restaurants, you can't forget Your Host!
Bed Bath and Beyond grunt.

I don't know of any former Caldor stores in the Buffalo area, but I could have sworn I saw a former Caldor store in the Rochester area. So it might have possible that Buffalo never had a Caldor store.

For the record, I did a little research with my college's system, and found a useful old newspaper article. Caldor opened 4 stores in Rochester in '93, eyeing the Buffalo market, but I don't think they ever made it. The Caldor stores in Rochester were all former Hills stores.
