WOW after seing those pics I miss Ames A LOT!:(

and Ames could've beat Walmart if they had the chance to keep their financials streight and continued with their successful image.

But Walmart wouldn't have that instead AMES IS GONE!

and to think that all those workers interviewed lost their jobs when Ames went GOB:no::(:hurt:

NOW THE ONLY STORES WE'VE GOT ARE THE UPSCALE ONES!!!

no rooting for the little guy I guess:no:

No doubt, Ames was able to achieve great things. They served an a market that was largly ignored by other retailers. They had a niche market, i guess you could call it.  But what happened you ask? Well.. the customers didn't go away, but the store did! It all boils down to.. Ames couldn't compete in bigger markets as it tried to do. Ames had something the smaller towns, once it tried to move in the bigger towns it lost it all. Ames had a lot of great merchandise, sure, it had some crappy merchandise as well.. but hey you get what you pay for! I commend Ames for what they did and tried to do.

the problem with ames was that it aqurrised to many chains and they nevre really keped most of there stores up to date but if they did not aquirre so many chains and keeped there stores up to date they would be able to survie

I agree that many Ames stores were outdated but i'm not sure if upgraded stores would have kept the company alive.  I saw many large and modern Kmart stores being closed while smaller old ones are still open.

Ames expanded with acquisitions.  I'm not sure Ames would have survived until 2002 without any acquisition.  Without acquisitions, Ames would probably have had less than 200 stores.  At that size, they would have bankrupt earlier like the other regional mid-sized chains.

I believe that Ames' size helped it live longer than all the other.  But again, some could say that the Zayre acquisition caused many store closings for Ames ... :P:P

I think the big problem was that it wasn't the number of stores being acquired that was the problem, but the fact that the stores being acquired were having huge finacial trouble and having Ames trying to pay off all that debt led them to the final brink of bankruptcy!:o:no::(

Yes I agree also that Zayre HAVING HUGE FINACIAL TROUBLE and having Ames take on that burden of so much debt left the company's financials unbalanced for they had to balance their money between opening new stores along with inventory etc. and paying off Zayre's debts after Zayre went GOB.Then sooner or later, like not paying long overdue bills Ames couldn't keep up with the payments and THEIR ONLY CHOICE was to go GOB as well! :o:(

Not to also mention Bradlees,Caldor,Hills debts too!

If they bought former Kmart locations they might of survived since Kmart is STILL IN BUSINESS!

Ames should have picked locationsd insted of mergan wit them but i like tat fact that they keeped the old store bulding in tack
