Time for a mega-thread resurrection

I've worked at a BBB for a couple years now. There is a real 'family' element to the staff. We all have each other's backs. Managers...not so much, but thats a whole 'nother issue  ;D

Recently we have begin beta testing of a new club, Beyond Plus. Basically, for a nominal charge (29 dollars either monthly or yearly) you get a 20% off everything coupon monthly. These are rare and can save you a ton. We are really trying to go paperless with our coupons, which is silly because our main demographic is older women who aren't so 'technical.'

I work at a very large BBB, which has its own Harmons Face Values department, which we bought out a couple years ago, and a Fine China/Registry department, which handles Wedding and Gift Registry. This accounts for a large chunk of our business.

Most of the other stores are very small. Cheektowaga store #140 is maybe half of the size of mine (Clarence #1059) and much older. Amherst #632 is brand new but still small. Neither has a Harmons section, but Amherst has a registry department.

We are pretty good with shrink. McKinley seems to get hit the most because it opens into the mall, so people can "grab and go" very easily. You wouldn't believe some of the security reports we get.

I'm pleased to work there, but I wonder if we won't start seeing a decline in business. Seems like some of the programs we are trying make us more desperate for customers (Beyond Plus is really strange).

The one where I live (Southington, CT) shares the former AMES (originally Zayre) with Bob's Discount Furniture is really small. It's under 23,000 square feet. You can see a picture of the store on the landlord's website.

https://www.rkcenters.com/rk-queen-plaza/

The one in Simsbury, CT is just over 30,000 square feet.

Closest one to me is in Lisbon, CT, it's a small location. There's also one in Dayville, CT, a bit larger there...

Most of our shrink comes from sheets, with makeup and small kitchen gadgets not far behind. We lost something like 12 grand from sheets and bedding alone.

We also seem to be bringing in a lot more electronic toys and things than we had in the past. These are big targets for thrives.

Dayville is my second closest, and I'll be there today.

Nice photo, but it's not Bed Bath & Beyond.

That's what I get for not paying attention.
Anyways, I'll edit this post when I upload my Dayville photos in a hour or so
Nevermind, they turned out blurry thanks to the rain.

We've rolled out a new merchandise line, called "the Grainhouse." Lots of country-themed stuff with fake wood and soft pastel colors. It looks very nice and has started to sell well since we brought it in one week ago.

Also, I was wrong with my earlier post. Amherst #532 actually opened in 1995. Cheektowaga #140 opened in the mall at an earlier date, then moved to their present location in 2011, according to our employee website.

Hooray! Word is we are getting new registers in May, replacing the THIRTY-THREE YEAR OLD IBM registers that we have right now. No word on how new/old they will be but it certainly will be nice to be able to put coupons in at the end and have the computer decide the "best deal." Currently, we have to take "$5 off $15" coupons as we go along, which is a tremendous pain in the ass.

Still...I'll miss those old terminals.

Another day, another new concept for the company.

Store 304 in Plymouth, PA (I'll check that, I don't think I remember correctly) has been reopened as the very first "B3" store, which combines Christmas Tree Shop/This and That!, Cost Plus World Market, and Bed Bath and Beyond items into one store.

This is interesting. To me, this will be like an upscale Kmart or even a Target niche, a store with a small grocery section. Who knows if it will work out.

Mike,

I haven to wonder if my local store in Southington, Connecticut is closing. The landlord's website is listing the store as a Future Leasing opportunity. That's the first clue. The second clue is when my Mom went there a couple weeks ago she said the store was poorly stocked. Although her Cashier denied they were closing when my Mom asked, those two clues seem like signs of a closing to me.

Here is the Leasing Plan from the landlord's website.

Oh, huh. Odd choice of a store to close. From the parking lot I saw that it was somewhat busy.

I haven't heard anything, though they aren't as open about store closings to us as they are store openings. I'll go ahead and check communications when I am in tonight.

Exciting times. The last of the old IBM systems are being phased out. I was trained tonight on the brand new Toshiba SmartPOS (point-of-sale, not what you think it stands for  ;D ) touchscreen system. Now, the computers automatically calculate the best coupon deal. Before, we had to take coupons as we scanned items, which was a tremendous pain in the arse. This is going to make things so much nicer and easier.

Too bad our stock is down to junk status...

Today we BBB employees were told that the company is closing store #1208, Batavia, n.y., due to poor sales. It is a very small location, and it looks like it has lost business to places like Walmart.

Elsewhere, the company is also closing store #175 in downtown Seattle, again citing bad sales.

The struggling home goods retailer released its plans last month to shutter the "lower producing" locations, representing about 20% of its namesake stores.

The closures are part of a broader plan to try to stabilize the company's finances and turn around its declining sales.

Two Connecticut Bed Bath & Beyond stores are part of the company's first round of store closures.

The Waterford and Stamford locations are closing in the coming weeks.

Bed, Bath and Beyond survives.  Sort of.

It's been purchased out of bankruptcy by Overstock.com, which is going to drop that name and rebrand itself as Bed, Bath and Beyond.

So Bed, Bath and Beyond will continue as an online-only retailer which will really be the old Overstock.com with a new name.
