Shoprite Plaza in Waterbury is located at 943 Wolcott Street just minutes from The Wolcott town line. It is owned by Vornado Realty Trust (which owned the 2 Guys Chain)  and got a big makeover in 2003. Over the years many different stores have been located here including: Edward's Supermarket, Shaw's, Price Chopper, 2 Guys Dept Store, Toys R Us, and Chuck E Cheese. http://retail.vno.com/property_home.aspx?id=Waterbury Not sure why there is no Store #7.

Building #1

Shoprite (Before Shoprite this was Price Chopper. Before PC it was Shaw's and before that Edward's. Shaw's operated here briefly as their store at the new Brass Mill Commons was under development)
TJMAXX
Sleepy's
Royal Buffet
American Steak House (similar to a Ponderosa)
Petco

Building #2
Vacant (Formerly Casual Male XL)
Game Stop

Freestanding:

Taco Bell (replaced a demolished Applebees?)

If I Remember correctly, the original layout was Toys R Us, Two Guys ( later became Edwards/PC/Shop Rite) A Schucks Auto Parts Store (later became Royal Buffet/Sleepys/TJMAXX) American Steakhouse, and Chuck E Cheese (later became Hermans World of Sporting Goods and now PETCO) and where Taco Bell is was a Roy Rogers. Building 2 was added several years ago

Is this the plaza that the original Toys R Us located?

It's funny, they are the same landlords that own Walmart Plaza in newington and they have owned it since it was built in the 60s. They never sold it or anything, they are committed to their properties.

I wish there was a picture of the original Waterbury TRU.

Is Wolcott Street in Waterbury becoming a "Ghost town?"

Last Spring Creative Cinemas closed down because they weren't making enough money.

Jump Zone an indoor bounce house place closed down.

KMART closed in November 2013.

Saver's closed in late 2013.

Casual Male XL closed sometime in 2013 as a result of a merger of a couple of the other big and tall shops.

Now today the following was posting on the Facebook Page for The Brass Mill Mall & Commons:

Coming Soon!
We are very excited for the spring opening of TJ-MAXX and PETCO in the Brass Mill Commons!
(Conveniently located next to the mall with Barnes & Noble & McDonald's).

One would assume that their Wolcott Street locations will close once their locations opens at The Brass Mill Commons. One would assume they're going to open in the old Shaw's which is currently 2/3's empty.

I had business to take care of in Waterbury yesterday and I stopped by Shoprite Plaza. It's amazing how it just 3 months it went from nearly 100% occupancy to nearly empty.

TJ MAXX and Petco both moved into the former Shaw's at the Brass Mill Commons. American Steakhouse just closed.

Goodwill moved their store from the plaza at the corner of Lakewood and Wolcott Rd to the old Petco. Dr. Dental might be opening in a portion of the old American Steakhouse.

This plaza now known as the Mattatuck Commons was bought by Katz Properties in 2016 for $21.6 million.

According to a listing on Atlantic Retail Properties Aspire Fitness is taking the former TJ MAXX spot.

Now there will be 3 gyms in a short stretch of Wolcott Street. Planet Fitness is in 1/3 of the former Caldor building at the corner of Wolcott Street and Lakewood Road. And Norm's Gym is in part of the former Marshall's in the Mattatuck Plaza at 650 Wolcott Street.

Mattress Firm closed its location in this plaza as part of that company's bankruptcy and downsizing.

Aspire Fitness closed after not even being open 3 years. Three vacancies in this plaza now - The largest is the Aspire Fitness. The next largest is the Mattress Firm Space. The other space is part of the former American Streak House.

Brammy

With the closure of Denny's on October 31st, there are now 4 vacancies in this plaza.
