This was a subsidiary of Howard Johnson's that served steaks and things like that. Post pics and talk about the chain here.

Ive never had the chance to see an old Red Coach Grille Restaurant.  When did they all go out of business?

Well, the Howard Johnson's company started to close the RCG restaurants sometime in the late 60's, and that's how Ground Round was started, I believe. Red Coach Grill actually ceased to exist in the late 70's, but their decline started in the late 60's. They were very similar to Howard Johnson's in their building designs, but sported a red roof.

Here's a listing of the Massachusetts locations with pictures, on Rich Kummerlowe's site. Other locations in other states are posted on the other pages. http://orangeroof.org/Massachusetts/RedCoach/redcoach1.html

It is sad to think that even in the 1960's that the Howard Johnson empire was showing signs of decline.  One would have thought that having that happen so early would have been a sign that things needed to change.  :hurt:

Yes, it is very sad, and unfortunately, everyone thought it would be ok, and Howard Johnson's would survive th outcome. Obviously, they were wrong..
