Market Basket in Revere, Mass just opened today. It was ready a while ago, but the mess over the summer delayed the opening.

The sale of Market Basket to Arthur T. Demoulas and his sisters has closed. Now here comes the really hard work...

Artie T has purchased the demoulas.com domain from a speculator - is it back to the future for the supermarkets?

I felt it was a gimmick, and now they have to face the inevitable backlash

Is it known if Market Basket will resume expansion plans?

retailisking

I think the bank debt MB took on has slowed expansion for now, but at least the ownership change ended the stasis that kept the stores already in the pipeline from opening.

After much speculation, and at least one denial, it's now official.

Yeah, with Walmart being the large anchor store in front of the hole, Market Basket won't be interested...  probably the same for the Lewiston retail project..  too bad.

Many Maine cities could have a Market Basket and have the space for it.

I still wouldn't rule out Market Basket for Lewiston; as a former mill town, it's right in their wheelhouse. That thinking went into their decision to come to Biddeford. I would prefer that MB buy the Promenade and demolish it to make way for a new MB.

(I added my reply to the MB thread):

Indeed, I also thought that the Promenade site would be a great location to re-develop.  There's also the former Sears but Save-A-Lot is already at the Lewiston Mall.

I think MB could start to open stores in these markets: Lewiston/Auburn, Portland, Bangor and possibly Augusta.

The Plymouth store has its own website:

Here are possible sites for a Market Basket expansion in Maine  + 1 that could relocate in NH:

Interesting choices. Portsmouth makes perfect sense as they're already at the other end of the plaza. Auburn is big enough but I don't think it has enough parking. Augusta could work, as the Target hasn't been P-Freshed. South Portland is a disaster area, and I couldn't see it working under the plaza's current ownership.

Portsmouth is more than overdue.  That store is one of the older ones and could benefit from the larger Kmart space!

I have noticed that Market Basket has moved in former Kmart stores in many places: Nashua, Londonderry, Haverhill..  The current Auburn and Bangor Kmart stores could become good spots in the future.

The South Portland location at Clark's Pond is indeed a disaster area.  It will become a church after all but I just thought the space was large enough.  The other option would be the new Westbrook Dirigo Plaza.

I think Dirigo is out due to the Walmart Supercenter. Another possible MB relocation to larger ex-Kmart digs is in Claremont, NH, which is actually owned by Arthur T's RMD.

What happened to the Bob's/Home Goods in South Portland?

why you say that of Auburn and Bangor ones?

Zayre88

Bangor and Auburn will close eventually (Kmart is literally going out of business one store at a time), these locations would then become prime spots for Market Basket.

The movie about the 2014 Market Basket thing was on an obscure network on DirecTV called Pivot the other day. I don't even know if I get that channel so I didn't watch. (Pivot by the way is going off the air at the end of this year/beginning of 2017).

I'm wondering too.  I can understand that the whole buyout story has slowed down expansion and expenses but I think they will eventually expand.

There are new stores in Mass.  Many markets in Maine would be great sites for Market Basket:

  • The vacant land at Augusta Crossing
  • Promenade Mall in Lewiston
  • or former Sears at Lewiston Mall
  • Former Kmart in Bangor
  • Dirigo Plaza in Westbrook?
  • a future former Kmart in Auburn?
