I remember that there were times when Walgreens, CVS, and Eckerd all had a large amount of mall locations. Nowadays with them constantly moving out, it seems like you can't even find a place to buy a quick snack, or any other convenient items at the mall!

I miss the Eckerd in the mall I work at, it left cause the mall highered its rent, and then they moved the stores next to it to other vacant spots in the mall and tore down the couple of stores to build a barnes & noble. (Eckered closed about a year before they tore down the space)

This is sad... first CVS bought Eckerd, then Sav-on/Osco, now Longs Drugs. They seem to think they are above the law.

I don't mind you using the picture of CVS I took but at least give me photo credit.  That pic is right there on page 4.

Many of them date to the days when CVS did not have pharmacy departments.  They were mostly just HBA stores.

This is correct (and also the fact that, "who is going to go to a mall just to pick up an Rx?"). Notice the fact that almost every mall from the late 90's.....+ does not have a "drug store" in them.

I have seen CVS ads from the 80's without the /pharmacy that only show health and beauty supplies, candy, film etc.... They were more of a Variety store than a pharmacy until the very late 80's. Only certain (usually the newest) locations had Pharmacy counters (which is why the whole /pharmacy thing came about).

No, actually all CVSs had pharmacies starting in 1969, when they were acquired by Melville Corporation. The mall stores without pharmacies were introduced in 1978.

The Eckerd (Thrift) Drug location at Neshaminy Mall closed right around the same time that Rite Aid acquired Brooks/Eckerd.

One CVS in my area opened in 1981, and seems to be one of a kind in this area. It has never been remodeled.

They're clearing what appears to be old farm land on College Highway (Route 202) in Southwick, Massachusetts next to the Big Y and Job Lot (former AMES) to build a CVS.

Heres The Lowell Mass one
The first CVS ever was established in Downtown Lowell in 1963. Today, the company does about $25 billion in sales in over 5,000 stores in America - and it all started as a "Consumer Value Store" on Merrimack Street in Lowell. CVS still maintains a store on Merrimack Street.

There's a really cool looking CVS on East Main Street in Meriden, CT down the street from a modern normal looking store. I think it's rather obvious that it was something else. Anyone know what it was? Sorry no pictures, but I can't take pictures while driving, watching traffic and my GPS at the same time.

P.S. Shouldn't this thread be re-named CVS?

They're planning on ripping down the popular Silo Restaurant in Farmington, Connecticut for a CVS. I suppose it's gonna replace the existing store 1/4 mile down the road in Post Office Square (the plaza where Highland Park Market is).

A 3rd CVS is being built in Bristol, CT. It is expected to open in October. It will be located at the corner of Mountain Road and Middle Street opposite ALDI.

http://bristolpress.com/articles/2011/05/19/news/doc4dd4705e2043b728503630.txt

Years ago - we're talking close to 13 years now there were 3 CVS's in Bristol. One in the Bristol Plaza (Stop & Shop Plaza), one in Bristol Farm's Plaza (the plaza where Big Lots is now), and one downtown across from The Mall at Bristol Centre.

Around '99 a new CVS complete with Drive-thru opened on Farmington Avenue next to the Dunkin' Donuts on the corner of MIX and Farmington Ave. That replaced the CVS's in both Bristol Plaza and Bristol Farm's Plaza.

The one at Stop & Shop Plaza became Dollar Tree. The one in Big Lot's Plaza sat vacant for years before becoming a 2nd Family Dollar location in 2004. They closed in 2009 and it's now an Aaron's Rental Center.

Side note: They really need to build a new one on Queen Street in Southington. The one next to Shoprite is small, old, and run-down.

I've done some research, and compiled a list of non-pharmacy CVS stores in the northeastern states, as of August 2011.  While the mall stores are dwindling there are still quite a few downtown stores that seem to not be going anywhere.  The most are in Massachusetts, which makes sense as that's where they started (the first pharmacy stores were 67 and 68, around 1968).  There may be some that I've missed, since I'm primarily using their store locator to find them.

DC:
57, 1716 G St NW (60s CVS, pre-Peoples acquisition store near White House)
283, 500 C St NW (70s CVS, pre Peoples acquisition)
2039, 2819 M St NW (90s store, post Peoples store in Georgetown)
2872, 1300 Connecticut Ave NW (00s store near Dupont Circle)
6069, 1101 Connecticut Ave NW (late 00s store)
8359, 1201 Maryland Ave SW (late 00s store near riverfront)

CT:
512, Stamford - Ridgeview Plaza (early 80s mall store)
812, Danbury - Danbury Fair Mall (mid 80s mall store)

MA:
31, Braintree - South Shore Plaza (mid 60s mall store)
50, Hyannis - Cape Cod Mall (60s mall store)
186, Natick - Natick Mall (early 70s mall store)
391, Newton - 241 Needham St (late 70s shopping center; paired with Marshall's and a former KB Toys, all of which were once part of the Melville Corp.)
480, Boston, 730 Commonwealth (early 80s downtown)
599, Leominster - Searstown Mall (early 80s mall)
1262, Cambridge - 29 JFK (early 90s downtown across from Harvard)
1878, Chatham - 637 Main St (early 90s former Thayer Drug)
1943, Saugus - Square One Mall (mid 90s mall)

NH:
823, Manchester - 947 Elm St (mid 80s downtown)
1290, Salem - Mall At Rockingham Park (early 90s mall)

NJ:
682, Ship Bottom - 702 Long Beach Blvd (early 80s freestanding shore store; previously had pharmacy)
991, Jersey City, Newport Centre Mall (late 80s mall)
1137, Jersey City, 34 Exchange Place (early 90s downtown)
1187, Brigantine, 901 W. Brigantine Ave (early 90s shopping center shore store; previously had pharmacy)

NY:
239, Johnson City - Oakdale Mall (mid 70s mall store)
354, Syracuse - 700 S. Crouse (late 70s downtown)
420, Albany - Colonie Center (late 70s mall; possible former Clinton Drug which was acquired in 1978)
721, Albany - Crossgates Mall (mid 80s mall store)
1227, Amherst - 520 Lee Rd (early 90s store on Buffalo State campus)
5017, Bath - 36 Liberty St (downtown former Brooks/Revco, acquired in 1997)

PA:
198, Media - Granite Run Mall (mid 70s mall store)
1595, Wilkes-Barre - Wyoming Valley Mall (mall; former Rea & Derick acquired in 1991)
1926, State College - 138 E. Beaver Ave (early 90s downtown)
4120, Pittsburgh - 610 Wood Ave (downtown former Revco acquired in 1997)
5105, Pittsburgh - 226 6th Ave (downtown former Revco)

RI:
13, Providence - 70 Kennedy Plaza (mid 60s downtown)
827, Providence - 291 Thayer St (mid 80s downtown)
868, S. Kingston - 99 Fortin Rd (mid 80s store on the University of Rhode Island campus)

VA:
2013, Fairfax - Fair Oaks Mall (mid 90s mall store)

There's also a few scattered stores I've found in other states, but haven't been able to research further yet:

5927, Columbus OH - 1634 Neil Ave (former Revco; downtown)
3696, Orlando, FL - Florida Mall (former Eckerd; mall store)
5129, Miami, FL - Dadeland Mall (former Eckerd; mall store)
7563, San Antonio, TX - 211 Losoya St (former Eckerd; downtown store along Riverwalk)
7606, Austin, TX - 2222 Guadalupe (former Eckerd; downtown across from University of Texas)

I'm sure over the coming years many of these may still close, so I'll keep an eye out every so often.

The Colonie Center store DID have a pharmacy until a few years back, when they opened a free standing store at Wolf Road & Sand Creek Rd, which is only a couple blocks up from the mall.  I assume they just transferred the prescriptions to the new store (and this makes lots of sense, since it would be tough to find parking @ the mall just to run in for a prescription).  At that time, they blocked off the rear part of the store (and the direct to parking lot door).

As far as I know, Crossgates never had a pharmacy (being a later location, they had probably realized by then that the pharmacy didn't work well in a mall).

Talk about bad luck. The new CVS at the corner of Middle Street and Mountain Road in Bristol, CT opened on October 1st, only to shut down on October 29th due to a massive power failure due from a freak October blizzard. That area got is power back around 8PM November 3rd. They haven't gotten any of their refrigerated/frozen food items back yet except for milk.

The one next to Shoprite on Queen Street in Southington was operating Cash Only 8AM-5PM daily Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Power was restored on Friday November 4th.

CVS is reportedly buying property on the Corner of Route 6 and North Main Street in Bristol, Connecticut to build a new store. It's across from the Northside Square where there is an ancient Rite Aid store. Currently the property CVS is supposed to be buying is a vacant restaurant (3 have failed since the original restaurant there closed when the owners retired) a building housing a Medical Supply Store, a barber shop, and a Spanish Jahova Witness Church (which just opened), and a vacant building that was once Jiffy Lube. Now has Enterprise Rent a Car in part of the space.

This will replace the store at 59 North Main Street across from the old Mall-at-Bristol Centre.

Silo Restaurant closed at the end of December 2011. I would assume once give the approval construction of the CVS will begin this spring.

CVS opened a brand new store at 895 North Colony Road in Wallingford, CT. This marks the first time Wallingford has had a CVS since 2003. Recently a slew of other new businesses have opened on Route 5 in Wallingford. From the picture that was in today's Meriden Record-Journal the store looks exactly like the one that opened on the corner of Middle Street and Mountain Road in October.

CVS just opened it's new store in Norwich, CT.  Right down the street from the old one.  It appears CVS is getting away from the strip mall style formats and going to its own free-standing buildings.  They are much larger and open, and look really nice as well.

The new CVS now has a drive-thru which the older strip mall style store did not, and also just happened to open right across the street from Walgreens.  Which, I'm sure is no coincidence that Wallgreens remodeled the store right after the announcement that CVS was breaking ground across the street.

ynkeesfn82

I have to wonder if the property where the Beijing Chinese Restaurant used to be on Queen Street in Southington, CT (next to 7-Eleven) would be big enough for a CVS if they tore down the building. CVS has been talking about moving out of Shoprite Plaza for years going back to when the Shoprite was Shaw's.

ynkeesfn82

Surprise! The former Blockbuster at 200 Main Street in Southington used to be a CVS. Saw a nice labelscar on the building today. Forgot to snap a picture. CVS is now located in a free-standing building at the corner of Main Street and Main Street. I know that sounds a strange but it's true. Route 10 Queen Street turns into Route 10 North Main Street at the intersection of Flanders. Then Route 10 North Main Street becomes Route 10 Main Street at the corner of Berlin Ave.  You come to a fork in the road. If you go straight it's Old Turnpike Road, but Old Turnpike Road is not Route 10. Route 10 Main Street curves right from Main Street.

In Philadelphia, there is a CVS/pharmacy that started out as a movie theatre, called Felt's Aldine Theatre, at the Southeast corner of 19th & Chestnut Street.  Over the yerars, this theatre has had many names: Stanley Warner's Aldine Theatre; Viking Theatre; Rugoff's/Cinema 5's Cinema 19 Theatre; and Sameric/United Artists Sam's Place Twin Theatre.

The CVS in Newington, CT recieved new window decals. It looks nice, compared to the white boards they had. Hopefully they will paint the building especially near the CVS signs, as they are worn and dirty.

In Middletown CT, they built the new CVS literally inches away from the old one.  Knocked down the former Hollywood Video and built a much larger, newer style building.  Interested to see how they are going to go about knocking the old building down.
