Apparently this was a Woolco that moved in a two story Sears building. Not sure if the second floor was used for shoping though.

I wonder if there are any of these stores that were not taken over by another, that still exists today. :huh:

$1.60 for a two liter? No wonder why Woolco went out of business :yup:

What are you talking about? That says 89 cents.

:rolleyes::rolleyes:You Changed It :rolleyes::rolleyes:

The Berlin, CT store, which was destroyed by fire, has been empty (literally; the building has been gone since 1999). The landlords of this shopping center probably don't care. My mom used to work in this plaza (Waldbaum's Foodmart which is now A&P Super Foodmart). They moved foodmart next to Woolworth's in 1996, and when Woolworth had the fire, an empty part of the new Foodmart building was damaged. After the poor destroyed Woolworth sat for two years untouched, they tore the building down (it was a really bad fire, maybe Arson, and the entire ceiling caved in.) They should of known that a torched building standing on what ever structure it had left would maybe collapse even more let it sit there. The empty spot doesn't even look nice. The walls look awful and they park ugly trucks there. In 2002, they re-did the facade of the older half of the plaza to make way for new stores. Ocean State Job Lot and Family Dollars anchor the older half. The movie theater next door to Woolworth was destroyed in 1997, and that whole strip is simply blocked with white boards. Berlin has no stores, and would benefit from new business.

Does anyone know why Woolco went out of business in the U.S. in 1982 but made it in Canada until circa 1994.  Did they have a better standing with customers up north? :huh:

Maybe, i think the competition was less strong up north too.  Woolco was the second largest disount department store chain behind Zellers and over Kmart.  With no Wal-Mart.    The stores were big and many were in great locations.  I remember they used the slogan: "Woolco, where the prices are just the beginning"

HoJofan206

Does anybody know how many U.S. locations Woolco had at its peak?  Did they all close down at once or slowly like Howard Johnson's? :huh:

A Woolworth and Woolco sign, orange.

Zayre88

Typical Woolco and former Woolco signs.

The one at left is a sign still used today by Kohl's at the Nashua Mall.  The store was a Woolco, then Bradlees, then Kohl's.

The sign is shorter than it used to be.
