Head over to the Genuardi's thread to discuss some recent Genuardi's info!

Safeway's brands are now being slowly phased in at the Acme, Albertsons, Jewel, Star, and Shaw's stores

My mom worked at Procter & Gamble from 1984 to 1994, and in her early days there, she worked on the Citrus Hill and Folgers brands.  One of her projects was in-store demonstrations.  These were taken at an unknown Safeway in February 1985.

The acquisition of Safeway Canada by Sobey's is not going so well:

"The company posted a staggering $942.6 million loss due to the continued fallout from its botched Safeway integration"

The Sobeys CEO misread the Western Canada market badly in terms of pricing and private label. Combine that with the fulfillment issues and the recession in parts of Western Canada due to the oil situation and you have a perfect storm. I wonder if they will try to salvage the operation or just sell for what they can get for it.

The dominant Bay Area supermarket banner takes over the remains of a privately-held chain that has fallen on hard times

Seeing how Albertsons Companies has phased out either the Safeway or Albertsons names in certain areas of the country (the Denver, CO area comes in mind, with the elimination of the Albertsons name in favor of Safeway), I could see them phasing out the Acme name in Maryland, since there is currently 62 Safeway locations and 6 Acme Markets locations.  In Delaware, It could go either way.  Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut there is only 1 name (Acme Markets)

We had a grocery store owner here in Pittsburgh when I was younger who had his stores
burn down THREE times.

Finally he had to get out of the business because no one would sell him insurance anymore.
