I have Genuardi's in my area, and there were Randalls where I used to live. The only time I went to a Safeway was in 2001, South Dakota.

This is a commercial for the discontinued Coca-Cola C2 from summer 2004, and the store in the video is an old Safeway.

Safeway was featured in the 1987 movie Inner Space.

This is an old Safeway from a Kia ad. A disgrace to Safeway LOL.

Searched for a topic and was surprised to find nothing.  With that...

A Safeway somewhere in MD.  This looks like a Penn Fruit style, doesn't it?

There actually is a topic for Safeway, rather mistitled though:

Safeway used to exist in the NYC metro until the late 50's to early 60's. Yeah...

Safeway, East Patchogue, NY (Finast - mid 1960's to 1988, Blockbuster - 1990 to present):

Safeway stores in PA/NJ/DE are known as "Genuardi's". Safeway bought 40 or so stores (all have been newly built or heavily remodeled)  from the Genuardi family in 2001...and completely turned the chain to $h1t. They raised the prices of everything, (Genuardi's prices were high to begin with...safeway made them worse)  They also did this with another chain they bought in the mid-west. You can read how they ruined Genuardi's:
http://www.ufcw.org/workplace_connections/retail/industry_news/genuardi_safewaymism.cfm

As a side note, there are many Safeway branded stores in the Wash, D.C. Area.

Old Genuardi's logo until the mid-90's:

The Safeway stores in Bear, DE and Newark, DE both opened as Genuardi's
"And I'm not missing a thing, watching the full moon crossing the range"

We should keep the victims of the Tucson shooting in our prayers, along with the injured and their families.  It was a terrible tragedy, and we must all work towards a more peaceful country, with fewer weapons.

After having checked the address, I noticed that I had gone to that particular Safeway store in 1994, when I was in Tucson, AZ.  I had never imagined it would become a place of tragedy, since it was in a pleasant and peaceful suburban shopping center.

Sobeys parent Empire snaps up Safeway Canada for $5.8-billion

Empire Co. Ltd.’s Sobeys unit agreed to buy Safeway Inc.’s Canadian division for about $5.8-billion in cash to expand in Western Canada.

The acquisition will immediately add to adjusted net earnings per share, the Stellarton, Nova Scotia-based company said today in a statement.

The deal is one of the biggest in the Canadian retail sector this year. The takeover gives Sobeys 213 full-service grocery stores in Western Canada along with 199 in-store pharmacies and 12 manufacturing facilities.

It'll be interesting to see what Safeway does with the proceeds from this deal. Will they beef up their US presence (Harris Teeter could be a bolt-on acquisition for their Mid-Atlantic Division) or will is this part of a pattern of shuttering or selling off non-core banners resulting in returning value to shareholders? Guess we'll just have to wait and see...

Safeway will be exiting the Chicago Market by disposing of 72 Dominck's stores.

Jewel-Osco parent's appetite for Safeway could go far beyond a few Dominick's stores

This hilarious video was made by an angry former Dominick's employee after it was announced most Dominick's would actually close: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vyLReexjEco

He was "suspended" for making this video, even though he would have been out of a job less than two days later anyway!

The Randalls division of Safeway in Texas (mostly Houston) seems to be on the same unfortunate road as Dominick's and before it Genuardi's, but because Randalls stores are mostly in some very good locations in the city of Houston convenient to the rich, the division hangs on. However there's no real reason Kroger couldn't or wouldn't buy the best Randalls stores individually sometime soon, but Kroger definitely wouldn't be allowed to buy the whole Randalls chain (due to antitrust laws as Kroger is already the biggest grocer in Houston by far). A few older, smaller Kroger stores could be replaced by Kroger moving to some nicer Randalls sites though, and native Texas grocer H-E-B is probably interested in a few sites, but would most likely demolish and rebuild from the ground up instead of sticking to tradition. I could see companies such as ShopRite, Supervalu, or Ahold buying Randalls though, but the Randalls name has already been tarnished enough by Safeway that I doubt it will survive much longer. The Safeway division in Dallas known as Tom Thumb was owned by Randalls before Safeway took over, and the grocery landscape in Dallas is much less competitive than Houston (but Tom Thumb and Kroger both are in the mix). Kroger still has a lot of room to grow in Dallas, and an acquisition of Tom Thumb would seem to be perfect for them, but most likely a merger would be blocked by antitrust agencies because Kroger would end up with a near-monopoly in Dallas (Walmart and a number of independent ethnic supermarkets would provide competition) not unlike Jewel-Osco now has in Chicago after Safeway decided to close most Dominick's stores and leave them dark. So it looks like Randalls will end up like Genuardi's (with other supermarket chains gobbling up most Randalls stores ASAP), but Tom Thumb will end up like Dominick's, closing and leaving eyesores everywhere.

I think in the Southeast, Dehaize (Food Lion) might leave the business. I think they should sell off Hannaford. I think Safeway is going to sell off a few more divisions.

Hannaford is owned by Delhaize, which owns Food Lion.

I really hope Staples isn't the new tenant at a lot of former Dominick's sites. Staples stores are the most bland and boring retail establishments I can think of on the planet.

zonemad96

I never realized how bad off Safeway was since near me out of all the stores Safeway is always the most crowded. Food lion, Aldi's, and Shoppers food warehouse can't compare the only 2 that are about the same as Safeway is Giant and Weis but Safeway has always seemed the most crowded and most popular store in the area.

The destruction of a once-great supermarket chain is just about complete. Steven Burd is certain to go down in history as one of the worst supermarket CEOs ever...
http://supermarketnews.com/retail-amp-financial/breaking-safeway-confirms-sale-talks

Reuters is reporting that the talks are with Cerberus (AKA Albertsons)
http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/02/19/us-safeway-cerberus-idUSBREA1I24L20140219

I'd love to see what the FTC would do with all the overlap in these cases. Or would they run two competing chains with different philosophies a la what Kroger is doing with Harris Teeter.

retailisking

There would be overlap and spinoffs to be sure, especially in SoCal (Vons/Albertsons) but Vons could be spun off to someone like Leonard Green (BJ's Wholesale Club.)

Stork of The Weak

Hey FitchMike26 (or anyone else who could help) any idea if the Genuardi's in Flourtown PA was given the Safeway lifestyle remodel before it was bought by Giant? If so that would be a waste because even though Giant no way would have remodeled this particular store when they bought it, they moved this store to a former Kmart across the parking lot less than a year later.

FitchMike26

Hi Stork. I only visited the Genuardi's in Flourtown a couple times. I'm not sure if it ever had the Lifestyle remodel. My "guess" is that it probably DID, since Flourtown is a very wealthy area.

Here's a pic of the outside of the store as Genuardi's.

Here it is as Giant:

As for Giant, the store WAS remodeled before opening as Giant. All of the Genuardi stores closed for 10 days each, for a quick remodel and floor reset, before reopening Summer 2012 as Giant. Then of course, Giant moved across the parking lot to the former Kmart store, pictured here:

Hey Mike,
Apparently the "Commonwealth of Pennsylvania" is the new owner of the original Zagara's supermarket in Ridley PA which later was "The Fresh Stop" but recently closed. This store by selling to the new owners who renamed it avoided the Genuardi's, Safeway, and spinoff that the later Zagara's stores faced. But what would the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania want a retail building for?

A new liquor store, probably?  Since all those are state operated in PA.

FitchMike26

Hey Stork. I didn't know Zagara's once operated a store in Ridley. I also have never heard of "The Fresh Stop."

Can you give me more information on where you're getting all this information from?

And yes, presumably the store will become a Liquor Store.
