I had a friend in grade school whose dad would always hold his birthday party at
Roy Rogers on Green Tree Road just outside of Pittsburgh.  The location was there
for many years, but is now an Einstein Bros. Bagel Shop.

There was also a Burger Chef restaurant tucked into a little cubbyhole in the basement
of the Cathedral of Learning at the University of Pittsburgh.  When Burger Chef went out
of business in the 80's it was converted to a Roy Rogers.

Roy Rogers was still alive at the time, and to mark the occasion, he was invited to be
Grand Marshal of the Pitt Homecoming Parade.  This brought out protests from the usual
left-wing campus types who complained that the choice was "too commercial".

There is plenty of free standing Roy's restaurants here in Maryland, there is 6 just in Fredrick alone. I just wish they had a dollar menu .-.

I wish there were more free standing Roy Rogers restaurants and have the restaurants that aren't in a highway service station/plaza would have the food prepared in front of the customer, but the burgers and other sandwiches would served without toppings (except for cheese) and they will still have the Fixin's Bar with a selection of fresh produce and condiments. If I was the head of the Roy Rogers restaurant chain, I would just leave the "cafeteria style" with the pre-made stuff under a heat lamp to the highway services station/plazas locations!

As long as it is profitable they will probably continue to do things that way since it's cheaper and easier and their is less of a risk than investing in building a whole restaurant.

I wish there were more free standing Roy Rogers too... I have only seen them in thruway service areas, I seen one in NYC but it was a multi-chain deal with huge markups.

The former Roy Rogers in Bristol, CT is now a Boston Market.

Here's a vintage Roy Rogers in Milford, OH. A few years ago, the restaurant changed its name to Roney's after losing the franchise. Although the original "covered wagon" sign was modified to reflect the new name, it was saved from this former location and installed at the new restaurant a few miles away.

It appears to be in very nice shape. However, the vintage Frisch's Big Boy right across the street was demolished about a month ago...hopefully this little jewel will find a happy ending.

Here is the new location for the restaurant shown above.  They did one hell of a job recreating a Roy Rogers - it's hard to tell at first glance that this wasn't one to begin with.  They even saved the sign from the original location. (And yes, the food is just as delicious.)

I always did like their roast beef better than I liked Arby's.

The former Roy Rogers in Green Bay, Wisconsin located on Shawano Avenue is being used as a makeshift storage shed for the KFC next door. It still has the door handles for Pizza Hut on the side entrance of the building from when it was a Pizza Hut delivery/carry out location in the 1980s/1990s. The building is located across from Subway and Motel 6 and sandwiched in between a busy McDonald's restaurant and KFC.
