It seems that everywhere, there are closed newer grocery stores, or abandoned grocery stores in general. There was an Albertsons near me that opened in 2000, complete with Albertsons Express, Starbucks, and Bank of America, in a brand new plaza. It closed in 2002, and is still vacant.
My list:
Randalls, FM 1960 and Kuykendahl, Houston TX. Opened 1999 in former Fiesta, closed in 2001, still vacant now.
Randalls, Jones Rd. and Grant, Houston
Randalls, Louetta and N. Eldridge Parkway, Cypress, TX
H-E-B Pantry Foods, 21155 Tomball Parkway, Houston. This store was another grocery store, possibly Food Lion. H-E-B opened in 1998, but closed in 2004. Still vacant.
Albertsons, 4740 Spring-Cypress Road, Spring, TX. Opened early 2000, closed early 2002, still vacant after 6 years.
Acme, Berlin, NJ
Acme, Clementon, NJ
Acme, Williamstown, NJ
Acme, Browns Mills, NJ
Acme, Claymont, DE Closed long ago, the middle of it is still vacant. 4 other stores now occupy parts of it.
Acme, Egg Harbor, NJ
Thriftway, Philadelphia, PA: This is a former Acme, but has closed too. Still vacant. This store oddly has a mural on the outside wall.
Genuardi's, West Chester, PA This store moved to a huge new store in summer 2003. Still vacant.
Zagara's: A "specialty and natural foods" chain with 4 stores. They were acquired by Genuardi's in 1997, which expanded them, but Safeway bought Genuardi's in 2001 and spun it off. They went out of business in 2003.
Giant, Salisbury, MD: This is a former SuperFresh, opened in 1997, but closed in 2001. Giant closed in 2006.
SuperFresh, Lansdowne, PA: This store closed during A&P's early 2002 closings, still vacant. It replaced a very old A&P in 1982.
SuperFresh, Philadelphia Pike, Wilmington, DE: A very old looking SuperFresh. Moved to a new store a long time ago, still vacant. It might have started as a non-colonial A&P.
SuperFresh, Bellmawr, NJ: A replacement for a colonial A&P.
SuperFresh, Newport Pike, Wilmington, DE: This was a newer SuperFresh to replace a colonial A&P, but it closed and was torn down.
TheFreshGrocer, Villanova, PA: This was a small grocery store that lasted only six months. The chain still exists, which broke off from the local Great Valu franchise. These stores were Supervalu before, and IGA before that. They still have Supervalu brand products.
FoodSource: A chain of 3 stores owned by Clemens Markets. When Clemens was bought by Giant, they closed 2 stores.
Clemens Markets, Hatfield, PA
Croppers Shur-Fine, Downingtown, PA: a high-end market in a newer plaza, with wine displays all around the store.
Giunta's: What Croppers became, but it closed.
Festival Foods, Eddystone, PA: Festival Foods is a grocery concept owned by Supervalu. There was only one in eastern PA, opened in 2001, but closed in 2003. They had several stores in western PA, but closed them later.
P&C, Painted Post, NY: This store opened in 2002, but closed in 2003 and is still vacant. Across from an abandoned Kmart, also a former Nichols discount store.

Check out my blog for pics of Berlin, Williamstown and Egg Harbor. Look in the "Labels" column to right of the blog entries for links to specific stores. I have the eerie Clementon Acme photographed but not posted just yet. Brown Mills is a future road trip.

Not necessarily, and the Genuardi's is actually considered Edgmont (Edgemont?).

My mistake... I was thinking Newtown where there is a Genuardi's just next door to an Acme.

In the philly suburbs: The former Acme in Southampton (which was there a a good 20 years or so--was previously in an even smaller store before that across the street).  Completely remodeled into a McCaffrey's (local chain, very expensive). That lasted about a year, then The Fresh Grocer moved in. Their prices were pretty decent, but could not compete with the Giant in the adjacent shopping center (which is likely why Acme moved one town over) and closed less than a year later. The space is now a popular local pizza place, a fitness club, and partially vacant.

That Acme opened in the late 70's, but relocated from across the street.

That reminds me of The Fresh Grocer in Villanova. It was built on the site of a former skating rink. The new building had an upper level with a Staples and offices. Very small store, with a weird layout, hidden behind another shopping center. It only lasted six months. The state liquor store connected to it is still open (relocated from the center in front). This store was subdivided into a restaurant/market called Maia and a karate practice called Summit. Maia was even more short-lived. It just became a Japanese restaurant called Azie.

These were not short-lived stores. The Egg Harbor one lived for a long time, at least 40 years.

There's an old Rojack's in Plainville, MA, but I think it's been purchased and they're going to start converting it into something else.

A couple to add to this:

Mentioned elsewhere on the site, but there was a Grand Union Mega Save (a new model they were developing at the time of bankruptcy) that was open for about 6 months in Albany (Central Avenue above Westgate Plaza) - it's now the site of Home Depot (who demolished the nearly new building and rebuilt, rather than remodel and add on).

A newer one - There was a local store called Chatham Supermarket (in Chatham, NY) that was open for only 6 WEEKS - this was due to the fact that the owner (who at the time had 2 other stores in New Lebanon and Philmont, both not that far away) had subleased the building from Great American, and this was at the time (Oct 95) that they filed for bankruptcy.  Since he was subleasing from them for less than half the original lease they were paying, and since the store hadn't been as busy as expected, he saw no way to stay open with the much higher payment he'd have had if he went to the building owner for a direct lease.
