And now it isn't any supermarket - at least the last time I was down there it was something else (forget what, but a non grocery store for sure).

this stop and shop along with bradlees next door got converted into a more updated and larger stop and shop that is 75,000 square feet. the store got a grand reopening late last august and the proposal for this started in at latest 2003.

here is the 70,000 square foot stop and shop in pembroke mass in the north river plaza. it opened in june 1982 as it was the first super stop and shop. the store was remodeled as the last time I saw it it was silver. stop and shop seems to want its stores to look like that.

The first two are the Poughkeepsie location (off Route 44) - the first their old store (now Big Lots) and the 2nd their current store (which was built on the site of a Caldor formerly in that plaza).

The 3rd & 4th are the Rhinebeck location - the 4th is the former Grand Union which Stop & Shop bought during the bankruptcy.  The 3rd is their newly built store next door - this sits on the site of a former Jamesway which had sat empty since they went out until this store was built (maybe 2-3 yrs ago).  Now the old GU sits empty (for how long, I wonder??).

Last is the Hyde Park store - it was built as a ShopRite (probably one of, if not the, last ones by Big V before they went bankrupt).  It replaced a store across the road (in with Ames) and was only open a short time before being closed down (along with a few others in the area) - it was later re-opened as a Stop n Shop.

Here's an old trailer featuring the old logo I found in the back of the former Charter Oak Mall in East Hartford, CT. You can see it clearly off I-84 East, after Exit 58.

1st is the Pittsfield/Lenox store on Route 7/20 right near the line between Pittsfield & Lenox.  The 2nd photo shows their gas station (the only one in the area - the only other one I know of is at the Poughkeepsie store).  This one was recently remodeled (thus the door under the left hand point).

3rd is the Pittsfield store just off the intersection of Route 8&9.  This is a slightly older design (not sure if they had a store in the area or just expanded an existing store - this one has been here at least 10-15 years).

Last is the North Adams store on Route 2 - another of the newer style (not newest, but it was until about 2 years ago).

Here's a really old-looking Stop & Shop in Peterborough, New Hampshire. The inside of it isn't like most recent Stop & Shop stores.

Here's a retro sign to an older looking Super Stop & Shop located in on the Hazard Avenue strip in Enfield, CT. This store also had a "Medi Mart" trashcan which I failed to capture.

It's probably a store they aquired from someone else - I have seen shots of a former A&P that closed in 2003, maybe that?

In south-central CT, Stop & Shop stores seem a lot busier than Shaw's stores.  How is it in other area of CT. MA and RI?

In New Britain Stop & Shop was located in the Columbus Plaza in downtown for many years. They recently built a new store on West Main Street as part of the rehiblitation of the Cor-West Shopping Center.  The old Stop & Shop was vacant for many years.  Price Rite finally opened a year or so ago.

The one in the Unionville section of Farmington is a converted Edward's. It's supposed to be demolished along with the Elite 8 Plaza in the back. A new Super Stop & Shop is supposed to be built in its place.

The smallest Stop & Shop I ever was in was one somewhere up Route 44 in Litchfield County. It was about the size of a convience store. I don't remember what town it was in. We only stopped there to use the restroom on. We drove up that way to see all the folliage.

And I don't remember why, but I remember Super Stop & Shop was forced to sell it's Avon store to Big Y.

Perhaps the Canaan store would be the one you are thinking of - I remember stopping at that one.  Maybe not as small as a convenience store, but small compared to a modern one.  Of course, that area doesn't have much else (I don't think) so that might be one reason why.

For those that don't want to visit my website attached is the photo of the 2 year old Bristol Connecticut Super Stop & Shop. They tore down Bradlees to build it.

The Old Super Stop & Shop in Bristol is now Job Lot. The new facade was put up this spring.
