J.H. Harvey Co., LLC is a supermarket chain with 68 stores in Georgia, Florida, and South Carolina. The majority of the Harveys stores are between 18,000 and 35,000 square feet. The company is a subsidiary of Food Lion LLC, which itself is part of Belgium-based Delhaize Group.
was founded by Joe Harvey in Nashville, Georgia, in 1950. Harveys has grown from a total of 22 stores in 1981 to the current 68 stores. Harveys growth during the 1990s was primarily through acquisitions.
Harveys stores are mainly located in rural markets within the Deep South with a focus towards quality foods (primarily in meat and produce) and service. Since being acquired by Delhaize in 2003, over a dozen Food Lion stores in rural areas have been converted to Harveys. Unlike Bloom and Bottom Dollar however, which are merely extensions of the Food Lion brand, Harveys appears to operate separately within the Food Lion LLC structure and is seen more as a subsidiary.

Joseph Hillman Harvey, Jr., the man behind the Nashville-based Harveys supermarket chain, died last Thursday after a long battle with cancer reports a recent Progressive Grocer article. He was 76 years old.

Born in 1929 in Nashville, Harvey began early served customers iced soft drinks in his father's grocery store when he was only five. In 1950, at the tender age of 21, he helped found the J.H. Harvey Company, Inc. In 1980, he became company president and CEO and in 1989, chairman of its board.

Emphasizing friendly customer service and a wide selection of fresh meats and local products, the Harveys chain grew from a handful of stores to 45 locations throughout Georgia and North Florida in 2003. At that point, Harvey sold the company to Delhaize Group. After the sale, Harvey maintained a lesser role, continuing to appear at store openings and other events.

"Harvey understood completely the bond that exists between a family and its local grocery store," said Harveys' COO Tom Robinson. "He believed in no excuses, and shouldered 100 percent of the responsibility for Harveys. He instilled in every Harveys store three basic principles -- exceptional customer care, low prices, and developing the best team members in the grocery business."

Harvey is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren
