3 men from Pennsylvania were arrested for breaking into the Southington, Connecticut Target by using a torch to cut a hole through a door.  They're investigating to determine if this is connected to similar break-ins at 13 other Target stores on the east coast.

I worked at a Service Merchandise store where someone tried to break in using similar tactics.

There was a fire door to the rear of the giftware department.  One of those steel doors that consists
of a metal frame and sheet steel on either side.  Someone had managed to peel away the outer layer
of the door, and was partway through peeling the inner layer when, apparently, either the sun came
up or somebody drove by and they ran off without completely peeling the inner layer.

The area where the Columbus Southwest store is located appears to have experienced a continuing string of retailers retreating from it even despite the presence of the Horseshoe Casino there.

They're so broke after they leave the casino, they can't spend any money anywhere else...

Seriously though, it's amazing how the casino was viewed as the saving grace for that area, and it doesn't seem like it's been that helpful in turning the area around.

And I'm not surprised to see that Springfield's closing.  Both of their Kmarts are gone (I didn't realize they had 2!), why not Target too?

I am worried TARGET will NEVER COME TO VERMONT! I mean they are a NATIONAL and such!

I think the only way Target would ever open in Vermont, is if they opened a smaller prototype store. Vermont is a state filled with mostly rural communities.

They could open there, but like I said, they probably would have to open a smaller prototype in Vermont, for a place like Burlington, maybe a store that is less than 60,000 square feet. It would sell 70% of what a normal Target store would carry, if one (or two) were to be built.

I would guess some of the issue is there either not being buildings available or them not wanting to use those that are.

Vermont has some fairly strong laws that force retailers to reuse existing buildings/sites where possible - just look at the Walmart and Home Depot in Bennington for an example (Walmart being a former 5&10, Home Depot combining an old Price Chopper and the Ames into one store which is similar in size to a normal Home Depot but a different shape, wide and shallow rather than narrow and deep).

Target's pharmacies were acquired by CVS last June...they are being re-branded...

It just depends on their flexibility - if Walmart can do it no reason Target can't.

Target has been flexible to some degree (with smaller locations and two floor stores in places as well).

One possibility lies in Kmart - if they keep closing stores that could offer Target an opening to take those spots over (and once in, to get approval to expand, as Walmart did with their Bennington location).

danfifepsu

I think they could open in that Kmart spot, its logical! for 15 yrs I have wondered When is Target coming to Vermont? vermont was the last state to Get a Walmart.

Former Target in Quebec City to become a Simons store.  Below is the owner of the chain inside the former Target:

This location opened as a Woolco, then Walmart, then Zellers, then Target, then Simons

Target Australia has something called Target Country (originally known as Fossey's). I believe it is Target Australia's attempt at a rural discount store similar to the American Shopko Hometown stores, as well as the now-defunct American rural retailers Pamida, Duckwall-ALCO, PM Place/Place's, Fischer's Big Wheel and Gibson's.

I went to the Taylor, MI location today and noticed a strip of translucent wall high above the corridor in front of the checkouts and then I noticed that behind one of the panels of the translucent wall was an office of some sort. Do any other Targets have upstairs offices?

Yes, the Target store in Appleton, Wisconsin's Fox River Mall has that. I believe most locations built in the 1980s have that.

Target has partnered up with CVS to open CVS/Pharmacy stores inside Target stores.

I think the crux of doing that was for Target to outsource their pharmacy operations - an audit nightmare - to CVS. CVS inherits the customer base, and Target frees themselves up to just sell HBA supplies without needing to concern themselves with prescriptions.

I just wonder how long the overlapping stores - CVS/Targets with a standalone CVS nearby - are going to last. Surely, one's going to have to give, right?

I think the free-standing locations might close.

In my area, there's a mall with two Payless ShoeSource stores, one inside the Shopko store anchoring the mall, as well as a storefront in the mall itself.

They could possibly coexist if the CVS is within a one-block radius of said Target location.

I'd suspect that the ones in the Target stores would stay for at least some period of time (probably something they required in the contract to sell) since Target wants the benefit of those picking up prescriptions walking through the store and (hopefully) buying other items on the way.
Of course, there's also the thought that CVS (and the others) have been moving to free standing stores to provide the option of drive up pick up, which they can't easily do in the Target locations, so that would be a good reason to keep their own stores open as well.

So, it seems that, at least for some time, they may very well all stay open.

The CVS transition, a steep drop in electronics sales, and continued challenges in grocery get the blame
