Magic Mart has announced this week it will be moving to the Old Wal Mart in Norton Virginia. Located on the West end of town in a shopping center it has anchored since it open in 1979. Magic Mart will move from it 40,000 square feet in the Norton Square to the Old Wal Mart left vacant four years ago when Wal Mart moved to a supercenter about 2 miles north of the location. Magic Mart reported that they had been trying for several years to move to the 120,000 square feet store. Magic Mart announced they would be offering some new products and more workers. They will only take about 90,000square feet of the building. It was announced about two months ago that Norton Community Hospital had bought the Norton Sqare Shopping Center. But they would honor all the least, Magic Mart has been around since the 1920's only in the Mountains of the Appalicans. have been moving into a lot of old Wal Mart and bigger centers.

No Magic Mart is a department store. Like Wal Mart, Kmart and Target. They are mostly in Appalachian Mountains. They have several in West Virginia, Virginia, a few in Kentucky and one in Tennesse and North Carolina, They sell name brands. check out their website at www.magicmartstores.com

Here is a former Magic Mart. Gone out of business in Covington, Virginia. Some of the Magic Mart have closed down over the years. They had one in Big Stone Gap, Virginia that shut down and later was torn down and became a new Food City. But here's a picture of a former Magic Mart in Covington, Va.

Here is a former Magic Mart Store located in Lebanon, Virginia. Not sure why the store shut down there wasn't an Wal Mart or Kmart around until after they shut down. I heard the lease ran out on the building and couldn't get it renewed. I know Russell County has bought the building which had a former Food Lion right beside of it, they are turing it into County offices and courtroom.

After sitting vacant since the
Super Wal-Mart opened, the
old Norton Wal-Mart store
building in the Virginia-
Kentucky Regional Shopping
Center will get a new tenant in
the next couple of months.
The owners of Magic Mart,
located in the Norton Square
Shopping Center on West Park
Avenue, announced yesterday
that they have reached an
agreement to rent nearly 90,000
square feet in the vacant Wal-
Mart building in an effort to
expand the store's offerings.
The company plans to open
doors on the new retail store in
September.
Magic Mart owner Richard
Ammar said he understands
that there has been a lot of
speculation about his store's
future in the community, especially
after the shopping center
where it is now located was
purchased by Norton
Community Hospital and
Mountain States Health
Alliance. But he has no intention
of leaving Norton, he said.
"We have been negotiating
for years with several different
property owners for the former
Wal-Mart location," he said.
Every time he was getting close
to reaching an agreement, the
Virginia/Kentucky center
would be sold again, he noted.
"Our goal was to stay in
Norton, but we needed a larger
facility to display the increased
and broader selection of merchandise
Magic Mart now carries,"
Ammar added.
The new location will feature
87,000 square feet of store
space, more than double the
current location. Wal-Mart
used about 120,000 square feet.
"I'd imagine the owners would
like to rent some of that
remaining space," Ammar said.
Magic Mart opened its doors
in Norton in 1979 in its present
40,000-square-foot location. In
addition to expanding the merchandise
offered in the Norton
store, Ammar said plans
include expanding the store's
staff.
Anyone wishing to apply for
a job is encouraged to fill out
an application at the Norton
Square location, Ammar said.

Mountain States Health
Alliance announced in early
May that it jointly purchased
Norton Square Shopping
Center with Norton
Community Hospital, but officials
say there are no plans for
any changes in the short term.
The hospital and the health
group paid $2.5 million for the
10-acre property. It was purchased
from a private investment
firm, Consolidated
Investments.

Plan Realty, the Virginia-
Kentucky shopping center
was purchased last year by
Centro Properties Group of
New York.
The center features 193,238
square feet of retail space in 21
locations including the former
Wal-Mart building. Seven
stores are still operating,
including an Ingles supermarket,
Little Caesar's Pizza,
Golden China restaurant and
Check into Cash.
Empty storefronts include
one 30,000-square-foot space
and eight spaces of 4,400
square feet or less.

Another former Wal Mart now home to Magic Mart.


Here's another former Wal Mart now a Magic Mart. They opened a brand new store in this area. Located in MEMORIAL SQUARE SHOPPING CENTER in Pulaski, Virginia.
Magic Mart now features more national branded products than any other similar store - from apparel, to electronics, floor coverings, toys, sporting goods, housewares, health aids, hardware and automotive products.

Magic Mart was located in Harlan Kentucky at  150 Village Center Rd. It went out of business a few years ago, and now is a Goody's.

Here's an older Magic Mart located on 3rd street in Richlands, Virginia. This is an older store. Not sure how long the store has been there, but the sign is what they used in the 1970's.

This is a former Magic Mart located in Lebanon, Virginia. This was called I think Higlands Shopping Center. Magic Mart closed a few years ago because the least ran out of the building. Russell County bought the property which also had a Food Lion and remolded the shopping center and put their courthouse and justice center. Looks really good.

This Magic Mart is located at South Side Mall in the former Kmart. Kmart shut down around 2002 and about two years later. Magic Mart moved from a location a couple of miles down the road to the South Side Mall. Of course Kmart had the car repair, and Magic Mart doesn't. But you enter Magic Mart through the Mall.

New Magic Mart in Norton, Virginia. On Sept 20th, 2008 Magic Mart Stores of Ammar Inc of Bluefield, West Virginia. Open their newest location in Norton, Virginia. Magic Mart had open in 1979 on the West End of the City. After serving the area for almost 30years out of the same location Magic Mart purchased the old Wal Mart building on the east side located in the Virginia Kentucky shopping center. Expanded thier Norton location from 40,000 sq ft to almost over 90,000 sq ft in size.  Here's a picture of Magic Mart in the old Wal Mart. With a fresh coat of paint it looks good inside and out.
