A major mall very far away from me, Edison Mall, is pretty interesting to me. I remember a renovation of the floors and complete remodel of the FoodCourt that took place around 1993-1995. My mom worked at a store in the mall around 1988-1989. It is now Macy's, was Burdines up till a month ago (had been Burdines as long as I could remember, at least), and during the period my mom worked there it was called Maas Brothers. The Dillard's at the mall underwent a MAJOR remodel in 1998-1999 and was once Maison Blanche. Here's some quick, possibly boring facts:
-ex-tenants include: Jarman?s, Maas Brothers, Walgreen?s, Woolworth?s, Naturalizer, Back to Nature, Babbage?s, Tilt Arcade, Maison Blanche, Footaction USA, Wendy?s, Samsonite (?), Camelot Music, Gymboree, playplace for children, Baker Shoes, Lechter?s Cooking Supplies, Afterthoughts Boutique
-open at least since 1981 (have facts to backthis up and is painfully obvious thanks to LOVELY vintage architecture!!!! Talk about a time capsule!)
-Anchors: cool older Sears, JCPenney, Dillard's, Macy's

Okay, more info later. I'm trying to contact the Chamber of Commerce for info on this mall!

Edison Mall in Fort Myers dates back much further than 1981.  There used to be a dedication plate of sorts at the Macy's (former Burdines/Maas Brothers) mall entry marking the date...If memory serves, its 1965.  Both the Maas Brothers and Woolworth had great restaurants.  I think the Macy's may still have a dining room.

Bristol Centre Mall is anchored by Ocean State Job Lot. They are offering to buy the mall from the town. Hope it goes through. Malls are cool. Strip malls where you go outside are a copy-cat of downtowns. Too much concrete parking you see whe you look out the stores windows. Ocean State Job Lot is a regional chain that sells clothes, holiday, domestics, hardware, automotive, food, cards, health and beauty aids, video/audio tapes, luggage, toys, sporting goods, etc. Mostly overstock items, you have to be careful when shopping but its a good alternative to Wal-Marts. Never been to Bristol OSJL. Been to ones in Clinton, Old Saybrook, Groton, Ledyard, Jewett City, Brooklyn, Willimantic, Manchester. Old Saybrook and Jewett City former Ames.

East Brook Mall - Mansfield CT - anchored by Kohl's (used to be Ames then Caldor before that), Cinema North (8 screen multiplex, TJ Maxx, and JC Penney. It is a small mall with about 30 stores. National chains like GNC, CVS, Fashion Bug, Radio Shack, Waldenbooks, FYE, Westie Shoes, Payless, EB Games (was a Kay-bee Toys). One of smallest JC Penney stores I have been in - just 1 level. TJ Maxx about same size as other stores. Kohl's pretty small too. But its an indoor mall. Though to get to TJ Maxx you have to walk outside JC Penney outside entrance and down the sidewalk. There are a few mom and pop stores in the mall. Outparcels include a bank and an Applebee's. Nice fancy outdoor wood and has these skylights and built more to the mall to add more areas to sit. I will add a page about it all later on.

New London (CT.) Mall knocked down in beginning in mid 1998 and reopened in 2000 as two strip malls facing each other
Old New London Mall had Bradlees, D&L, and Marshalls as anchors with a few specialty shops like Strawberries, 5th Avenue Seasonal and Card shops, Hickory Farms, Orange Julius, CVS, HobbyTown USA, and dollar store.
Current New London Mall has 3 buildings with one building on one side and two on the other: Bldg 1: Shop Rite, Hallmark, Office Max, West Marine. Bldg 2: Marshalls, Chinese buffet, row of specialty stores. Bldg 3: A.C. Moore Crafts, Home Goods, and Dress Barn.
I miss the old New London Mall. It was nice especially the Bradlees. Bought a good amount of things there. Mall was nice since it was never real busy but was not dead either. Shops interesting esp. when D&L closed and 5th. Avenue took over the space. They had the nicest seasonal merchandise you have ever seen. Remember the 1980's Strawberries store.

Bass Pro shops said no to Carousel and said yes to Fingerlakes Mall. Now Fingerlakesmall is no longer a dead now their is talks about adding on to the mall,

the fingerlakes mall was not that big and it seems dingy when I was there 4 weeks ago. the jc penny was small, but the bass pro shops looked neat. you could tell a k-mart was there by one of the entrances. the waldenbooks was small.

why did great northern mall and penn can mall exist. syracuse seemed overmalled. I went to great northern mall over spring break and got in trouble with mall security for taking pictures outside. the mall security guard in the mall told me they were getting calls and concerns from people at ruby tuesday and took me to mall security management. they did not make me delete my pictures or take away my camera. I want to forget about that though. they told me to stop taking pictures, so I had to finish my picture taking across the street. MALL security seems to get tougher around cities with 100,000 people or more and those areas is usually when you would see mall security cruise around. I also almost got in troubgle 3 yeras ago at the holyoke mall for taking pictures

Because both of these malls used to be the Premier Malls of Syracuse. First Penn-Can Mall, and then Great Northern before Carousel came in. Also, back then, Malls were the big thing. Now, it's not that way. Strip Mall styles seem to be the big thing.

I think I remember someone else saying on here that they got in trouble at Great Northern for photographing. Amesman, was it you??

I agree with the strip malls thing because of like lower rents. a problem I have with indoor malls is that they open at 10 pm on weekdays and saturdays and at 11 pm on sundays and sundays close at 5-6:30 pm, which really controls your schedule. it opening at 10 pm can slow you down. BUT ABOUT PEN CANN MAll what mall was it similar to?

I'd too would love to here who else got in trouble at the great northern mall. they seem to have a strict policy of pictures. Since, I have been edgy with photography of malls. when I was brought to mall security management by the security guard in march I was told it is due to advertising issues. that seems to be why you need written prior approval, but there is no guarentee they will give it and mall security seems to get more strict and tougher around cities with 100,000 people or more (Again I and a few other people on this board got in trouble with the holyoke mall for taking pictures). mall security can drive like maniacs. the mall security guard (who took me to the security office) at great northern mall said to me; when he saw me in the hallway of the mall while shopping, where you taking pictures, we where getting calls from people at ruby tuesday (which entrance is in and outside the mall) about you (me) taking pictures and had some concerns. so people at ruby tuesday squeeled, but I told my dad this (he was not with me) and he says that they (mall security) could be making it up as police would instead of say they it for themselves, they said someone called because it was bothering them and people called because you where bothering them (like noise complaints at parties). I am now edgy around these malls because of people taking out their phones and calling. my dad said they might take my camera because some mall security guards are not on the level as some of them where kicked off the police force and some stuff did not come on background check and would take my camera becaues they want it. me getting grilled by mall security is extremely rare as it only happened to me twice inside of 2.5 years. ANOTHER problem I have with malls is the parking issues on saturdays and at lunch time (everyday of the week and saturday) they drive like maniacs and I have almsot gotten in accidents at lunch time as they drive like maniacs.

I wonder how strict mall security is around new york city

Why yes,  it was me who got into trouble for getting pics of the place. I had photographed the old school Dick's Sporting Goods and a couple of hallway shots, and this * insert nasty word here* security guard made me delete them off my camera. That was three years ago, and now the Dick's Sporting Goods has been remodeled. As you can probably imagine, I was not happy when I found the remodeled store last year. Next year, I might go back and sneak some. I do have outside pics from last year though because my parents drove me around the mall.

I would not be happy too, I wuld have loved to have seen the old school dick's. if possible, you could have photographed it from the toys r us parking lot (but discretley) since you could not be noticed. if taking more pictures of the mall, BE CAREFUL so you do not get caught or have what I had which is the mall security guard saying they where getting calls from people at ruby tuesday. That mall security guard making you delete them without consent of hte head mall security is MEAN! they never did that to me when  I got in trouble, so again I hope that mall security guard got demoted to some other job. WEll inside the mall you are more likely to get cought. I do not take pictures of inside the mall cause of that.

Can any of you name any of hte malls around new york city area for me (Those are the only malls in the state of new york I have not been to) how many are there.

powersbt

The big problem with trying to take photos discretely, is that the more discrete you appear to be, the worse that Security is going to look at you. You don't want to appear that you're doing some kind of undercover operation.

amesman

D_fife, to give you an idea of what the old Dick's looked like it goes like this: Inside looked like the Crossgates Mall location in Albany if you've ever been inside there, and the outside had the logo that is on the Elmira location.

Also, powersbt, I agree with you. Being totally discreet would get you in more trouble than just whipping the camera out and taking pics in the general view of people. It does help however, if you turn the flash off of your camera when taking pics. That always helps me. But I do try to be cautious about when and where I take pics.

Malls that should be moved into this category:

Parkway Center Mall, Pittsburgh, PA
Southwyck Mall, Toledo, OH

Both have been demolished.

Southwyck Mall, Toledo, OH

Both have been demolished.

If there are threads for these malls on the current malls topic, I will move them to the dead malls topic. I spent 13 hours on Saturday working on the board. (And less time yesterday). I still have a long way to go to put things in the new designated boards.

I'll add a mall The Charter Oak Mall in East Hartford CT...Anchored by a Bradlee's and a Stop & Shop with a Radio Shack, Frava Shoes, Medi Mart, Papa Gino's (my friend and I were their first customers), a menswear shop (Guardsmen) and two others stores....Now, Big Lots is where Stop and Shop was, Stop & Shop moved to the mall section and Burlington is where Bradlee's was...

An article from our local media on the struggles of The Galleria at Pittsburgh Mills,
which seems surely well on its way to becoming a dead mall.

http://triblive.com/local/valleynewsdispatch/13211082-74/as-more-tenants-leave-pittsburgh-mills-mall-coming-up-empty-in-search

IMO one of the issues with this mall is that it is located in the far northeast of the Pittsburgh area
along the Allegheny River.  Unless you already live in that general area it is not a convenient
drive from most populated sections of town.

I just had my hair cut at a BoRics where the girl told me she had worked at MasterCuts in the
Century III Mall for 17 years until its recent closure.  Aside from JC Penney and Dicks there is really nothing left there now.

I went to the Pittsburgh Mills mall recently. I know that I'm probably in a minority, but I think the mall has redevelopment potential. I think the macy's is actually a pretty large, new looking store on a good site. I'd say the mall could be trimmed/downsized down to and eventually made healthy. Nothing destinational but at least functional.

1. I'd move JO-ANN out of the mall but create a big box row space and it could go there. As part of the enclosed mall, it has blocked it's mall entrance and can only be entered from the outside. I guess it can get away with that while the mall is dying but it really shouldn't have been able.
2. Move Dick's to where JO-ANN is located.
3. Trim the mall to just Neighborhood1 and maybe Neighborhood5. Or basically end the mall by JCPenney, so the walk corridor is just between Macy's to JCPenney. It would shave off over half it's footprint. Cinemark would only be accessible from the outside, but that's ok. As many movie theaters aren't actually attached to the mall.

Demolish the Sears building and as much else as possible. Then go mixed use with a big box row portion and maybe other use (like office, residential, etc). At that point, even if JCPenney closes (as it's in a vulnerable situation), Boscov or another department store would be more inclined to replace it, then if the rest of the mall is experiencing redevelopment.

I watched Dan Bell's video for this mall, as I generally like his videos. But when I visited the mall, I think he trashed the mall too much. It really wasn't that awful. He went on about it's ugliness. But I think it's irrelevant. I just thought the mall was going to be a lot worse. I don't know the local demographics of the area very well, but I did find the mall not too far from the PA Turnpike. It seemed from other establishments around, like enough other activity around the mall could likely warrant this mall just to be an average smaller sized mall, and the rest of the space likely could be re-used. Probably the size of Harford Mall in Bel Air MD.

I hear the Cincinnati Mills (Forest Fair Village) is in a far worse shape. Unfortunately, it's too far for me to check out.

I think Cincinnati is worse. I've never been there but from videos, it looked defunct.

As I mentioned, I think if Pittsburgh Mills was downsized, it could be made healthy even if it's just a mall for the local area and nothing destinational. But it would require vision and some mixed use.

I have not been to Pittsburgh Mills in a very long time.   It is located in a particularly
inconvenient place relative to my home.  People I know who have been there recently
say the vacancy rate has topped 50%.

I believe a lot of their problem has to do with choice of location.  It is in the far
northeast of Allegheny County.  This is not a particularly well-do-do nor populous area,
and it is not easy to reach from most parts of the metro which are.

It almost seems as if they intended it to be a destination like an outlet mall.
If so the people who chose the location did not understand Pittsburgh traffic patterns.

For it's size, it's too much mall for that area. To have worked, it would need to have been in a more populous area with a good number of with high income households as mentioned.

However, that area has a number of stores like Walmart, Sam's Club, Michaels, Petsmart, and Lowes Hardware along with macy's, JCPenney, Dick's and Cinemark. One chain that is missing is The Home Depot. Nearest store to Tarentum, PA is 10 miles away (from homedepot.com). I wonder if a developer could replace mall space with some big box space and get a few strong tenants there. Home Depot would be one.

Owings Mills Mall was pretty large. It was fancy too. Now it's a center anchored with Costco and Lowes as the largest tenants. Nothing fancy but a very functional replacement. The AMC screen survived (from mall to center) although it was more like an outparcel.

I was surprised when I visited Pittsburgh Mills how neglected it is that Sears Grand was still listed on the mall signage.

Here in the Philly side, Exton Square Mall isnt dead and there is no dead mall video yet that I'm aware. But, it's struggling and with it being two levels throughout, the vacancies are hard to replace. I'd say in some ways, it is more challenged to improve/fix.
