Here is a copy of the Grand Opening ad from when Ames first opened in the former Grants location in Gouverneur, NY.  The ad is dated May 26, 1976 and according to the ad, the store opened for business the very next day.

Ames took the place of the Grants Department store in the same building. Before that Grants used to be downtown before the fire in the early 70's. They built the plaza located on Rowley St and Route 11. Later Ames took over the WT Grants Store. I just remeber Ames in Gouverneur in the early days like 77 and up. That was where we went for everything. and We still did even after Wal-Mart opened. I was sad to see it go and so was the entire community. Wise Buys is okay but people became dedicated to Wal-Mart in the absence of Ames.

Wow!  Check out those prices - only  $1 for a halter top.

On another subject, does anyone why WT Grant went out of business and when?

;)

They went bankrupt.  It was about in the spring of 1976.  I have an article about the closing of the Gouverneur store.
