IGA
Around here, IGA is a leading chain of supermarkets.  Here's a pic of the newly opened IGA in my town :P

Wow, nice store. IGA is a CO-OP, so they have some real nice stores, or some real small junky ones depending what/how the owner wants to run it...just like Ace or True Value hardware

IGA IN THE TROPICS!:D

In the 80's we had several IGA's, almost all of them in old Alpha Betas. We had a "First Value IGA", "Pepper Tree IGA", "Gene's Food Basket IGA", and "Jim/Jim IGA" among others. The only building still being used as a grocery store is the old "Gene's Food Basket" which  sat empty for several years before becoming an R-N Market. They didn't remodel it so it looks like a 70's Alpha Beta inside...

see how many IGA logos you can find in this this photo!:mrpink::insane:

Was just in Lake Placid, NY this past weekend and noticed that the IGA there had closed (was open last year this time).

Here is the other IGA in my town.  This one is an IGA extra.
It opened in the mid 90's as a Sobey's supermarket that had a white logo on the green storefront still there today.  Sobey's owns IGA:  they renamed the Sobey's and renovated the store with the common IGA style.

NJxxJon

we had one in our town. but it left....and now apperently my "town" owns the grocery store of like only 10 aisles..... :barf:

yes IGAS are still around. there is one in berlin nh near downtown and one in colebrook nh. the IGa in cornish maine is now Shop 'n save (not the hannaford owned stores)

Not owned by Hannaford, but (apparently) supplied by them.

They have done this in other locations - it looks like a Hannaford inside (store brands and maybe even the decor at some point) but someone else still owns the store.

Also kind of like Giant Eagle in PA area (they have the same, some stores corporate owned, some independently)

HoJofan206

Actually there are hundred's of IGA's left scattered across the US

store215

IGA's are a CO-OP like Shop Rite. sometimes each store has an individual owner, or there is a larger company that manages a few of the stores.

BillyGr

This is the Red Hook (NY) IGA - it has been the only store in town until they built a Hannaford just south of the main aprt of town a year or two ago.  They also recently completed a remodel/expansion on this store.

BillyGr

This store was most recently an IGA - then is was vacant for a couple years before DG moved into the right end - the left was vacant until just this year when the fitness place came in.  I don't know, however, if it was another store before the IGA - if you do, please fill us in - Thanks!

I miss my small town IGA. Just a small five aisle mini-Kroger with the finest meat and produce. It was a dumpy little store, the owners didn't care. Their son took over as manager in 98 and closed us down in less than a year. Dork.

We used to have TV's on the ceiling, that played the weekly add in each department and talked.... there was a little jingle that played.... Thanks for your shopping at your hometown proud Weston IGA.... Hometown Proud, IGA, everyday, IGA IGA hometown proud I-G-A!

Also, our store carried the "Fame" label for off brands. The little diddy on the "IGA RADIO NETWORK" would be "If it's fame on the label, it's quality on the table.

beachgal26

Wow!  I am shocked to see such nice stores as the IGAs that I encountered as a kid up North were always old, junky and really didn't look that inviting.   Does anyone know how many stores they currently have in the US?

They have come a long way since then!
