Retail Regents

Big M is a small chain of independently-owned stores in Upstate NY and Northern Tier of PA.

This had formerly been a part of P&C since the 1950's (and thus Penn Traffic), before that company went bankrupt.

They had some stores that were company owned, though those were either closed or sold to independent operators when the corporation was in bankruptcy.  There may also be a couple of former P&C locations that wound up as Big M stores if they were not purchased by Tops or others as part of that liquidation, then they were reopened by independent people as Big M.

Looking back the one in Sherburne (NY), it is possible there was another space in the building when it was still Great American or were GA stores this wide?

Yes.

Thinking that since many (if not all) the Great American stores were owned independently (thus you often saw a name before Great American), the design/shape/size of the buildings probably depended on who was running them.

So yes, there could have been another store in part of the building, and yes, it could have been that wide originally.  Not really any way to know, short of finding someone who has lived there since it was built however long ago that was.

Inside, it looks like two spaces combined into one. There is an open doorway separating the left side (the main portion) from the right side of the store, where the fresh foods and deli are located. Also the lighting style changes between the two areas of the store.

Then it probably makes sense that it was two separate things at some point.  Maybe something like a pharmacy in the town (where they might have relocated from such a space, even if it was an independent that a chain took over)?  Only since that was a common type of combination to have, particularly when grocery stores didn't always have much in the way of HABA type items that the drugstore would have carried.
