Ames is in the process of becoming.... STAPLES

The sign was off the building (but not off the road sign, maybe they'll wait and change that one and the Brooks one (to Rite Aid) at the same time ;)

Oh man.  I saw this one last summer, Big Y was using it for storage!  It was one of the last few still standing in Mass!  Thanks for the update!

Didn't see it mentioned anywhere here but I believe the Great Barrington Ames sustained some minor damage from a strong Tornado on May 29, 1995. It started near the Taconic parkway in NY and the tornado was at peak strength as it passed just to the right of the store going through the cemetery, leveled the race track across from Ames then went up over the hill killing 3 people in a car on rt 23.

I took some pictures of the damage in the fall of 1995 but I doubt I got a picture of the Ames. I'll have to see if I can find the negatives.

The National Weather Service in Albany may very well have Ames pics from that. Shoot em an email. http://www.erh.noaa.gov/er/aly/

Here's what the Big Y/Ames/Brooks plaza sign in Great Barrington, MA looked like in May 1997. From an old video of mine.
