they were a chin like Home Depot but better and not as big i seena store a long time ago in the moheagan lake mall wich had a Pergament Waldbaums Jamesway and a hadful of outher stores in 1997 Wal Mart and Home Depot moved in there kicking out menny stores including Pergament and Waldbaum closed and Became Marshells and the Jamesway was Vacant Proveing that  HOME DEPOT IS EVIL LIKE WAL MART but what ever the resion Pergament couldent keep up wit home depot cause they started opening stores every were:mad::flaming: and put pergament out in 2001 after fileing for ch 11 there was also a Caldor located in a Plazza acroos the streat from the mall they closed it in 1998 CAUSE MAL MART HAD TO OPEN NEXT TO IT:mad::mad::mad::flaming::flaming: kohls is now there

Pergament killed themselves.... no offense, but they were horrible stores, they went from Super Centers to Express stores, and the Express stores sucked, their selection sucked.  They are now a Realty Company... www.pergamnetproperties.com

i do agree wit u but not all of them were bed ive been to one in the moeheagan mall and that store was noce lookk it remined me of a small homedepot but there were some pritty trashey ones

The one interesting thing to note...there was one Pergament (Bethpage LI/NY) that was originally quite different than all the rest of the stores.  That particular store had two levels (ground level and a basement) on a large property, and was more like a traditional discounter (in the realm of Two Guys/TSS/Modell's) that had some of everything like toys, stationary, clothing, housewares, pet supplies, etc. in addition to Pergament's "normal" hardware/lumber.  Most of those departments were leased out to other companies which supplied merchandise and ran those particular departments.

Originally, the store was laid out that hardware/lumber was in the basement while the "general merchandise" selection (and even a small supermarket at one point) was on ground level.  Sometime during the mid 1980s, they decided to shift focus, so they switched the arrangement around (gen mdse in the basement, hardware/lumber on ground level, and the supermarket was gone).  Not more than a few years after that, they did away with everything other than the "core" Pergament merchandise and took back the basement space and used it for things like drapes, vacuums, housewares, etc.

That store is now a Pathmark supermarket.

Funny thing about Pergament is the one in Bethpage, NY was a regular department in the 70's and 80's. I remember buying my first guitar there in 1985. No idea why they switched to home centers but they were pretty good until Home Depot started WalMarting all the other similar businesses.
