Can that be peeled off? I got some ames signs that i peeled off the doors!
I tried man...I'm going back in about a month, so, I'll try again. I have limited time to go though. They're gonna demolish everything but the old Jamesway, for a Home Depot

Hey guys check out what I just found. An actual recipt form Service Merchandise from August 13, 1997. This was a little over a year before they closed for good. Yes, we still have the VCR and I'm sure my sister still has the Barbie somewhere. What I get a kick out of is how a VCR costed over $230 in 1997. Keep in mind, DVD's were still in their infancy.
BTW, this store is still standing, logo still intact and all. When I get new batteries for my camera, I'll take a pic.:bounce:

coo just to let u know Service Merchandise Closed 5 years after 1997 they closed in 2002 they closed a huge protion of stores in 1999

Ok, now that you did that, you can work on getting those department store letters off of the walls that are still up throughout the Flea Market. That stood out in my mind when I last went there.

i read an acrtal on Service Merchandise it was dated 2003 but a New Company bouth the rights to the name and thast why the lanched the web sight this company onced worked wit SM untill the 1990's mean whikle if the sight dose good they might expaned Service Mercandise back into the retile world once again:) the stores problems waent because of Wal Mart it was because they tryed newer things that were not takeing in any money it was financhle probles that put the out of bizz and at there peek they were the nations no 1 Catlog show room store and at there peek they had 413 stores this was in as of 1998 in dec that year they clsed more stores and a ch11 filening in 1999 they clsoed over then 100 stores:( in 2002 they had 213 stores left and closed all of them that year the funny thing is they anouced there going out of bizz sale on the Same date Caldor did it in Jan only caldor did it in 1999:( and hear what a 90's Service Merchandise looked like mean while they used that logo from 1987 1988? to about 1997 till the newer one came out

My Service Merchandise was set up in a strange way. It was in a strip mall adjacent to an indoor mall anchored by JCPenney, Dillard's, Sears, and Burdines, and across the street from Montgomery Ward. The Service Merchandise store was right next to a Marshalls store in the plaza, and istead of each store having a seperate entrance, there was one set of doors. When you opened this set of doors you were faced by a scarily dark corridor of sorts. To the left was the entrance to Marshalls, to the right, Service Merchandise. To this day Service Merchandise is empty. The sign was only taken down recently (the red and black script type) and a new, larger Marshalls sign was put up. About a year ago I decided to go to Marshalls to see if it had changed any. I was scared to death walking alone in the dark corridor, with the run down, dingy Marshalls entrance to one side and a dark, locked up entrance to an abandoned store to the right...I was half expecting someone with a gun to jump out at me :o

NASHVILLE, Tenn.--Service Merchandise Co., a specialty retailer that filed for bankruptcy protection in March 1999, said Friday it will cut about 500 jobs and begin shutting down all 216 stores, including 20 in the Chicago area, because of poor sales.
Service Merchandise plans to ask a bankruptcy judge in Nashville to approve its liquidation request at a Jan. 18 hearing. Its going- out-of-business sales are scheduled to begin a day later.
The Brentwood, Tenn.-based company, which had said in February it would emerge from bankruptcy after Christmas, said sales were hurt by the terrorist attacks and the recession.
Service Merchandise "didn't have a real identity and lacked a firm image. It was a store that was there," said analyst Kurt Barnard, president of Barnard's Retail Trend Report. "That was not enough to prevail in a fiercely competitive environment.
"Without the recession, they had a very difficult stance," he added. "With the recession, their position was made untenable."
The company expects to file a plan for distributing money to creditors by Sept. 30. Common shareholders are expected to receive nothing under the plan.
Shares of Service Merchandise fell 1.4 cents to 0.4 cent.
The 500 employees to be fired by the end of January comprise about half of the company's corporate, distribution and sales support workers, the company said. Another 8,300 store employees will remain through the going-out-of-business sales.

SErvice merchandise de-diddly stunk because it scaled back on merchandise, like Toys and sporting stuff and other stuff and reduced their store to half. When they were in operation still, the closed down space got leased to stores like Micheals (Nashua NH, relocated location) and Bed, bath and beyond (Salem NH)
MY dad said they went downhill. THEY CLOSEd 216 stores in 1999, I saw one vacant in BAngor when I went there in 1999. And closed like 50 in 1997. They had one in PResque Isle (I have never been that far north in maine, but saw it in the catologe locations and a 1994 article in the bangor paper said it was closing due to the economy).

What are you talking about---the hurricane ht store? That was closed down long, long ago, before the hurricanes...and hate to nitpick, but I just don't find it funny when any store--Home Depot or not--gets hit by hurricanes. I lived through the ones of Summer 2004--nothing I ever, ever want to see again. Sorry if I sounded rude, but it's just something I feel. I don't know if you've ever experienced it, but driving down the road and seeing once familiar places rendered unrecognizable by a deadly force of nature like a hurricane is no picnic.

It's okay! You didn't really offend me--it's just that I am now really, really sensitive about this stuff. Charley was NOT a pretty sight--landfall was in a town heartbreakingly close to mine, and for awhile we thought it was coming right for us. :(

My only experience with Service Merchandise was in Antioch Tennessee. My mom had applied for a job with them. The store was very well layed out and eligent (SP?). It was a very nice store and made me think of a rich people's store. I will never forget that. If only i would've known more at the time and now.
this service merchandise was in Plattsburgh in the Champlain Centre mall and was 53,000 square feet. It closed in Spring 1999 in a round of closings when SErvice merchandise closed 135 stores. In Fall 2004 the store was replaced by GAnder Mountain.

the store to the left of Kids r us was Service merchandise. it is now Bed bath beyond and a relocated Michaels. This was in NAshua and opened in spring 1991. none of the new hampshire stores closed in bankruptcy.
Did you know that service merchandise closed 133 stores or 35% of their stores when they entered bankruptcy and did away with half their departments.

here is the former 55,000 square foot SErvice merchandise in pittsfield/lanesboro mass and opened september 1988. it closed when they closed 133 stores in bankruptcy and taht round was in early-mid 1999, and bangor, auburn and brunswick maine; somerville, tewksbury, holyoke, leominster, pittsfield mass; albany, plattsburgh and amherst ny were part of this round. enfield connecticut and west hartford connecticut closed in a earlier round.

yah it was lousy in the end, my parents could never, in the end, find the right stuff and did not shop there as much. it was dumb to dump half their merchandise categories. them closing 35 percent of their stores was pathetic too and they pulled out of albany and buffalo new york in that round. presque isle maine stoer closed in feb 1994 as an individual closing. there waws never one in rhode island (if ther was it probably would hvae been in warwick), but there was one in swansea.

It wasn't until everyone started getting hit hard by Wal-Mart's low, low prices that their quality began to suffer. Then the stores started carrying less and less of a variety of high quality items and some stores even cut their floor space and just jammed what they had left toward the front of the store. That just gave it a sad and depressing feeling and it was sometime in the late 1990's that the stores in Memphis began to close until they were all gone.
The good news is that you can shop them on-line, but it will never be as much fun to fill out your order and wait for it to come off the rolling conveyor belt at the back of the store!

the gary's furniture here is the former service merchandise building in PRESQUE ISLE MAINE. it is on rt. 1 in downtown. it closed early 1994 and it claimed the closing was due to the economy. this one opened 1980 adn the one in bangor opened 1980.

This store replaced the store in the Dutchess Mall further south when it closed in 95. I found the cart corral in the parking lot in front of the store. Took these pictures in late June/early July.

It looks like all they're selling is jewelry which is not smart considering the millions of sites to go to. Their main focus in the 70's and early 80's was variety and quality, so I'm not sure how long they'll last this time.

I think they are working on the site still. because from the main page all you see is Jewelry for sale. but if you click on "© 1999-2006 Service Merchandise, "Fine Discount Jewelry Store Online"

The Newington store which became a Stickley and Audi furniture store is cloing, if not yet soon. However, it already has a new company moving in. LA Fitness will take over the building, their already applying for permits with the town. the funny part they really want to move into Newington, bc their were one of the 3 orignal companys to move into the Caldor building before Stews took over.

Wow, I remember seeing this Service Merchandise every time I went to the Auburn Mall, which used to have a Caldor as well. This is directly across the intersection from the mall. I remember coming here until they closed, which a few years later BB&B moved in, tiling the entire store front with plate glass windows.
The store behind it was and still is an old-school Shaws.
I agree, it looks like their website might be slowlyphasing out or something. It looks like they have room for other categories along the top, but only Jewelry.

I have to agree with that. SM stores were usually old and dirty as well.
There was a Serv Merchandise in the local mall that was later replaced with a second Dillard's.
I also remember them in Houston, lining the strip malls until they slowly went of business.

The last lighted Service Merch sign I ever saw was in early 2003 in San Antonio. The store, however, was gone.

That is in the Mall of Memphis. My local SM had a similar raised white thing, except now it's a Dillard's. It was Wilson's long ago, however.
I worked for them in Columbus and in Pittsburgh, in between my stints with Ames and Hills. They were a very well-run company, with very efficient systems. Their IT infrastructure was years ahead of it's time. They could have jumped on internet retailing in it's infancy and cleaned up, beating guys like Amazon to the punch. All of the back-office needed to support it was already in place. The fact that they did not do so belies the reason for their downfall.....that being arrogant, stubborn leadership.
It's probably a long shot, but I don't suppose anyone here has a photo of the Service Merchandise that used to be in Bangor? I am not sure exactly of when it closed, but the building was demolished and a Best Buy was built on the property that opened in 2001.

That's actually incorrect. The former West Mifflin Service Merchandise is the PRC building next to that. I happened to bump into an individual a while ago when I was taking pictures in the area again, and we got to talking. I originally thought that the SM was the race bar as well, but he told me that the PRC building was the Service Merchandise.

The only thing I remember about Service Merchandise was it was were to go to get Mom something state of the art for the kitchen. Back when black&decker had launched it's under the counter collection.... You know, it saved like 2 inches from the counter top to the hanging appliance?!!!! I had gone there for an under the counter coffee maker for a Christmas gift. 5 years later it started leaking and was time to be replaced, so of course I had gotten it at Service Merchandise and decided to go back to get another one....
I couldn't find them anywhere in the store and asked a clerk for some help, the response was priceless!!!!!!!

You'll have to go to Walmart we don't carry that kind of low grade appliance here!!
Needless to say that response actually made me not want to shop at a service merchandise again, since I only shopped there for gift giving needs it wasn't a big deal to find another business happy to take my cash on what would be considered a "low grade" appliance purchase...

Apparently Service Merchandise had a music department, here's a price tag from an old LP the Jungle Book.
Sorry that I don't have any pictures to post, but there were quite a few Service Merchandise stores in the Orlando and surrounding areas in Central FL in the 1980s. There was one on Sand Lake Road, Colonial Drive and one in Melbourne.
Since they had such great variety and a really neat delivery system, I'm still shocked that they couldn't hold onto their client base enough to stay in busines!

HAHA! Soooooooo many dead stores were at that location. I remember Great Eastern department store (with Hills supermarket) and then it was Woolco (where I bought my Atari 2600) then the Service Merchandise (and various tiny stores in an attempt to make it a strip mall of sorts) and now, sadly, it's a WalMart.

That building was a Foodland grocery store at the time. It was the site of an infamous shooting
back in the mid-90's (the store was being robbed, a customer who was armed waited by his
truck in the parking lot, shot 2 of the 3 perps as they exited, killing one. He was not prosecuted)

It's a shame they went under around the same time as Montgomery Ward, even though you would think Service with their more modern stores would have had the edge over Wards. Both companies were major catalog retailers. Also, at the same time as Wards was going under, so did Lechters Housewares, which left a lot of empty spaces in malls, albeit much smaller spaces than the Montgomery Ward anchors as they closed.
I remember digging through the Hot Wheels at the store in South Burlington back in 1999.
Probably one of my strongest early memories that I have (I was 6).
Service Merchandise should have gotten the attention JCPenney did in Back To The Future. Considering JCPenney stores in 1985 were already looking dated, I would think a more modern, hip retailer should have been featured. In fact Service Merchandise updated their logo in 1985, to a logo that perhaps was used too long. The company changed their logo again in 2000 but I guess it was too late to save the chain. Lots of the stores were given the new version, but the stores themselves were badly neglected and many closed looking old and outdated.

Wards was more like sears only nicer. Service Merchandise was really different the whole catalog showroom thing was dated by the time they went out. they only had one store by me in the jefferson valley mall that closed in 1999 long before the chain went out the store itself was dated and you had to wait for your item to come out on the conveyer belt

Coincidentally, both were even longtime anchors at the Southgate Shopping Center in Southgate, MI. Service Merchandise took over the old Federal department store there in 1978 and also inherited a water tower behind it, which was repainted into the pre-1985 logo.
When the center was completely remodeled in 1989, they received a new entrance and with it the 1985-1999 logo. It stayed like that all the way through the end. The now-deteriorating water tower was restored and repainted to the following:
SOUTHGATE
(1999-2002 SM logo)...in 2001, after a campaign by a local elementary school student. The building stood vacant for a couple years before it came down in 2004, with the water tower meeting the same fate in 2005. Except for an area at the northern end of the lot, which was built on by an Old Chicago restaurant, it's still empty today.

That's actually incorrect. The former West Mifflin Service Merchandise is the PRC building next to that. I happened to bump into an individual a while ago when I was taking pictures in the area again, and we got to talking. I originally thought that the SM was the race bar as well, but he told me that the PRC building was the Service Merchandise.

Yep. I worked in that Service Merchandise location from 1993-96.
It is still a call center, but has changed hands and is now owned by Alorica.
I would love to take a tour and see how they managed to retrofit the interior.
The blue building in the background is now a gym, but was a Chuck-E-Cheese location
when I worked here. The rusty Service Merchandise sign is STILL on that sign post,
down the hill by Century III Mall, in 2015.
The start of the new year brings to mind one of my LEAST FAVORITE things about working
for Service Merchandise.
It was the fact that they did inventory for every store in the entire chain in early January, around 10 days after Christmas. We took inventory internally, using our own employees, and did not engage third-party inventory companies like RGIS.
This meant that after coming through an exhausting retail Christmas, and the hectic week of post-Christmas returns, you STILL did not get a breather, as immediately you had to prep your store for inventory. There was virtually NO break in the 70 hour weeks between Thanksgiving and mid-January, by which time you were pretty much exhausted to the point of dropping over.
All you could do was pray that they did not spring a major replannogramming on you over the summer that would have you working these kind of hours as well.

Went by my old Service Merchandise store in West Mifflin the other night.
The call center has closed. The building is up for lease.
One of the local car dealers (there are several nearby) is using the parking
lot to park excess inventory for the time being.
The gym next door, a former Chuck E Cheese location, has also closed.
Directly across the road though, on the site of a demolished Busy Beaver store,
sits a brand-spanking new Goodwill store.
Eating places on this site (Denny's, Bob Evans, Long John Silvers and Handel's
Ice Cream) all still open and apparently doing well.
Went by my old Service Merchandise store yesterday. It has just reopened as one of those storage locker places. The building has been painted white and some windows were added to the facade. After Service went under it had sat vacant for some time and then an inbound call center moved in. It has recently been vacant after that call center operator was sold and the new owners decided to close the facility.
The former Chuck E Cheese next door was recently torn down and what appears to be some sort of automotive service center is under construction on the site. Some new building is also going up across the parking lot sharing the footprint of the former Busy Beaver store with a Goodwill location.
