This is a kind of odd looking photo of an unusual store. This Home Depot in Bennington is in BOTH the former Price Chopper and Former Ames stores. They really didn't change the outside much - Price Hopper was the left part, Ames the right. It also uses a small space to the left of Price Chopper which was a former Rite Aid then Matress Outlet. In addition the "plaza" has a Dollar Tree (which used to be a movie theater).

First, the store in Crossgates Commons in Guilderland - one of the original tenants of this big box center across Washington Ave. from Crossgates Mall. Standard store.
Second is the Albany location on Central Ave - this site at one time had a Price Chopper, Caldor, Fays and 3 smaller stores - later the Price Chopper moved to Westgate Plaza, Caldor was replaced by probably the last Grand Union opened (lasted 6 Months before bankruptcy) and then the whole thing was torn down to build the Home Depot.
Third is the Pittsfield (MA) store - in the "Price Chopper" Plaza off Route 8- site right next to Walmart (which is just to the left of the greenhouses).

Actually, as BillyGr points out above the Bennington store takes up both of the fromer Ames and Price Chopper spaces. Ames was at first a Kings, then became Ames, and then Ames closed. Price Chopper moved to another plaza. Then, Home Depot moved in.

I have heard from friends of mine that used to work at the old Kmart here in Ogdensburg NY that Kmart has the same store policy. The same situation happened in the Kmart here once.

Yeah, we had a case a few years back of employee ignorance at the Kmart in Webster, MA, I knew someone who worked there. These 2 guys loaded a big screen tv into a shopping cart and wheeled it out the doors. When the Sensormatics went off the cashiers assumed they already paid and waved them through. A half hour later they realized the tv was stolen, they guys got away.

Obviously this person had some experience in Loss Prevention. I'm not sure how their Loss Prevention works. Seems like there is more to this story than what is being said.

Expo is a more upscale version of Home Depot (more focused for home-designer-type people instead of do-it-yourself'ers). I think they closed a bunch of these a year or two back.

When I was a kid I pulled such pranks as gluing the toilet seat down and the plunger to the wall at Ames, but not putting glue on the toilet seat. Apparently Home Depot is being sued by an angry customer who got glued to one of their toilets!

A quick fact about Home Depot:
In the early days of Home Depot, when smaller hardware/lumber yards would close due to lost sales, it became traditon that before a store opened, managers would present the local competition with a black wreath and pet casket (which a logo of the targeted store in the inside) in the hopes that they would go out business. According to the A&E Special, management did this to invoke fear in managers.
When Home Depot first opened and began building, they were referenced as the Wal-Mart of the hardware industry...

When did Home Depot first become big? I know when it was founded, but when did it first become well-known? I wonder what their original logo and/or store designs were like. The first time I ever went to one was in 1995 or 1996.

I have only shopped in two Home Depots. They are located at:

Here is a picture I took of The Home Depot in Lawnside, NJ. This is a former Jefferson Ward and Bradlees. Notice the hot dog stand where the white awning is in the front.

The one in Freehold was a Builders Square that opened in 1990. Hechinger acquired HQ in 1987, and Builders Square in 1997.

You can see the sign of the Southington Home Depot behind the condos. We call this the Queen Street Home Depot even tho it's on a side street called Interstate Park Drive. The condos were built long after the store.

How come even though Home Depot stopped building new stores with the "State's Home Improvement Warehouse" signs in the early 90's, a batch of new stores in the early 2000s had them? Just recently, I saw those signs were gone from my local HD, which appears to be an older one.

The Home Depot in Westfield was a former Caldor. I'm assuming after Caldor closed, the OSJL across the street in a former Ames took their aisle signs.

thoughs aisle signs look liked the ones i use to see at bradlees the ones at caldor were red and longer

Could the current Home Depot in Freehold be both a former Jamesway and a former Builders Square? I seem to remember seeing pictures on SiteRide years ago of the store as both of these at different times, but maybe Jamesway and Builders Square were both in Freehold somewhere and had the same generic architecture?

Thanks. But it wouldn't have been too surprising had the Jamesway been a Builders Square for some time, considering the former Woolco/Jamesway in Bensalem was a Price Club before The Home Depot.
