Title: Media Play
Post by: store215 on December 14, 2005, 04:22:00 PM
They were started by Musicland Corp. in 1992 and had 61 stores at the announcement of closing on 12/11/05. They sold books, movies, music, electronics, games, and other memorabilia. They will all be closed by the end of January 2006.
(Musicland also owns Sam Goody and Suncoast, but these are not closing). The chain was breifly owned by Best Buy around 2000-2002.

I heard about this today actually. I remember going to the old Mohawk Mall store in Albany before it closed in 2001. I have also been to the Poughkeepsie, Middletown, Syracuse, and Buffalo stores.

Media Play stores to close
Updated: 12/10/2005 7:13 PM
By: News 10 Now Web Staff

Media Play stores across the country will be closed by the end of January.

The Parent company, Musicland Group, said it will close all 61 stores, including its two locations in Central New York. Media Play operates stores in Shopping Town Mall in DeWitt and the Northern Lights Plaza in Mattydale.

Gale Weller, a frequent customer of Media Play said, "They have a really good place where the kids can sit and play while you shop. They have great prices. I'm going to miss it."

Media Play stores across the country will be closed in just over a month. The parent company said the chain wasn't able to compete with other big box media stores.

A spokeswoman for Media Play said they were not able to find a niche in the marketplace for a big box music and entertainment store.

Media Play opened in the early 1990?s and struggled financially for a number of years. It employs 2,000 people nationwide.

Musicland will now concentrate more on its mall-based media chain Sam Goody.

As I heard of the news of Media Play closing I felt that another piece of my childhood was closed. When I was in the theird grade I entered a art contest to win a gift certificate to Media Play. I won, and recieved the gift card for $100.00. All of my class mates thought that was the greatest thing ever, now poor Media Play is closing, not even a blip on the radar compared to Best Buy and Circuit City. What happened to the good old days the 80's and 90's man things have changed. Not really for the better either. Here is a tribute to one of the stores now "of the past". Good bye Media Play, old friend.

These places all look the same... but here's the Media Play in Harrisburg, PA.  The fact that it closed is justice of sorts for friends of the family, as they had a fairly popular small bookstore that couldn't keep open when Media Play came into town.

Anyway, here it is:

In Connecticut, Media Play began to drop quickly after 2000 with the Manchester and Newington ones submitting to competitors and other retailers. The one near the Enfield Mall is officially gone now.

It's funny too... I hadn't visited Media Play in nearly a year before I asked about the preordering of X360s at the nearby mall's GameStop and they told me I might have a chance at Media Play. In awe, I asked him where there's anymore of those and he told there's one right down the street. I was shocked.

I visited twice before the unexpected closing. It almost felt like a store I loved to visit came back but only for a short time. I took a picture of the remains...

I shopped at the Media Play in Harrisburg alot. For the most part their prices were a little high, but I could always find bargains. It really didn't do great business due to all the other stores that ended up moving into that area in the past few years. You could go in there on a Friday night or Saturday and it would be pretty empty. It was a nice store, bright and open unlike Best Buy or Circuit City where everything is crammed into a small aisles.

Found this online:

Through next month, Trans World will be grand-opening six new super F.Y.E. storefronts inside old Media Play outlets, which were closed by Musicland late last year. Four of the rebranded sites are in Utah and two are located in New York, and interiors and exteriors have all been renovated. Super F.Y.E. stores average 24,000 square feet and carry expanded product selection.

So it looks like "Media Play" is coming back somewhat. The article said the stores will still have books, but not as many. (Not suprised as FYE, and the old Musicland, don't/didn't know much about books anyway)

FYE is also expanding! the Suncoast brand, while slowly fading out the Sam Goodby brand.

i don't know waht the south hills one will become but I am assuming it will be torn down as I think (this is my speculation) they will tear some of the parts of the mall down or it will be sublet to other places.

The Middletown Media Play was in the space that was once an Ames. I don't know exactly when it opened and closed but it wasn't open for very long.  I think it opened in 1989 or 1990 and was closed before 1994.

The Media Play in the Taylor Retail Center on Eureka Road in Taylor, Michigan has been subdivided into three new spaces. Lumber Liquidators has officially opened their newest location in one of these spaces.

http://www.thenewsherald.com/articles/2014/08/27/news/doc53fcc93303e2c885584901.txt (http://www.thenewsherald.com/articles/2014/08/27/news/doc53fcc93303e2c885584901.txt)

The article also mentions that the other two spaces will soon be filled by Party City (which will be relocating from their current location next to the Kohl's in another shopping center next to Southland Center) and an indoor trampoline park called Sky Zone.

This, plus the relocation of an existing Big Lots elsewhere in Taylor into the former Circuit City and the opening of Panera Bread in the long-vacant Rio Bravo (both in the same center), has played a role in the rejuvenation of the previously half-dead Taylor Retail Center.

Here is my main memory of Media Play, I was living in New Britain at the time, so I probably went to a nearby location (Southington maybe, I honestly can't remember), anyway, I liked the store, it was there where I purchased an IRON GIANT VHS, with the little figure inside and a giant plush of SHREK, I was probably seven at the time, the people were nice, and the store was set up better (with better prices) than most of today's FYE stores. Sadly, I think in the days of Netflix and Amazon, these stores won't hold on for much longer. I miss Media Play, was sad to see them go. Oh the feels are coming on strong right now.  :'(

Probably Newington right off The Turnpike in the Plaza with Shaw's. These days Shaw's is Stop & Shop. Media Play is now Bob's Clothing & Footwear. Southington did not have one.
