Title: Third anniversary
Post by: Zayre88 on October 11, 2005, 09:46:17 PM
It was Ames' third anniversary of the GOB news this summer... and by mid-october the final closing of Ames, three years ago!

Here's my picture of Ames in Saco,ME in september 2002.  Back in the day, the GOB sale was close to it's end.  There was a lot of RTA furniture left, along with housewares and other stuff.  I remember seing boxed merchandise that probably arrived fresh from the warehouses.  There was a lot of shoppers but the store was more than half empty by then.  Empty racks and closed aisles...

Back in the day, we could still see the labelscar of the "e" in the former Zayre logo on that store!  Now it's a new Shaw's supermarket.

It is hard to believe it has been three years since Ames left us. On Wednesday (October 19) will be three years since my Ames closed.

Well... on aug. 14 it will be the 4th anniversary of Ames announcing it will go out of Business.  I  found out about the news by e-mail because i had registered to Ames news releases by e-mail....

Where would Ames be today if they could have emerged from bankruptcy?

I agree. Even if Ames were to have emerged, the damage was already done. Unfortunately.

Regional Discount Chains barely exist anymore.

In Maine and NH, since Ames closed, Wal-Mart has more Supercenters, Lowe's, Target and Kohl's have opened many new stores along with other chains like Best Buy, Dicks&others.  Many Supermarkets have renovated and expanded their stores.  It would have been a tough market for a small regional chain like Ames anyway.

I totally agree that it is a new (and not great) day wherein the big chains like Wal-Mart rule the world.  Since nobody seems to be able to match many of their prices, I do shop there for some things, but I miss the old days of being able to decide where to shop (GC Murphy, Murphy Mart, Kresge, Montgomery Wards to name a few).

I do find it interesting that while all the old names like Ames, Caldor and Bradlees have all gone out of business, we have a new crop of stores like Kohls, AC Wright and others that are all opening up around the country and wonder what ever happened to the original "variety" stores that I love and remember from my childhood.

Now around here it is Target and Walmarts with one area Kmart still open, We have Kohls too but they aren;'t the discount store variety.  I always loved to browse the holiday decorations at caldors and Ames.  The Christmas trees seemed to go up earlier and earlier in Caldor each year.  And I think it was caldors that had the Trim a Home brand for their decorations.  So sad these stores are no more.

Nobody noticed that Ames went out of business 6 years ago already, unbelievable!! 2002-2008

And also, Ames was founded in 1958, so it would have been the 50th anniversary of Ames in 2008... certainly with special sales and giveaways all year long. :yup:
