Title: Zagara's
Post by: storehistoryguy on August 17, 2005, 03:22:52 PM
Zagara's didn't last long at all. They opened in 1996, started by the Genuardi's family who owned Genuardi's. It was a health food supermarket. They closed in 2000 when Safeway bought Genuardi's supermarkets because Safeway didn't want to own a health food store.

I believe I passed a few former ones in New Jersey...I think Whole Foods bought them.

The chain closed due to bankruptcy, not because it was eliminated by Safeway. You must have meant only one location. It was never owned by Whole Foods. At some point three former Genuardi's employees took over Zagara's, separating it from Genuardi's and Safeway. I cannot remember the source, but I read that those employees blamed Safeway for ruining Zagara's by adding broadline items to the selection. They sold gourmet products, but I think they sold some health food. My nearest location was in Glen Mills, PA, (The Shops at Brinton Lake.) This store opened in 1999 and closed with the other stores. In 2004 it became divided into Foodsource (a similar gourmet supermarket owned by Clemens Markets) and a state owned Wine & Spirits Shoppe. When you enter Foodsource, the entrance to the Wine & Spirits Shoppe is in front of you, towards the left end of Foodsource. They are considered two different stores.

The entire website is still up, but not with a simple URL. You have to type in a special code: http://164.106.167.185/index.asp?page=home

The Zagara's in Glen Mills, PA became FoodSource, owned by Clemens Markets and contained a state store. FoodSource closed this store and the one in nearby Greenville, DE after Clemens was sold. Their only remaining store is in Bryn Mawr.
