Title: Jewett City, CT aka #0400
Post by: JJBers on October 14, 2017, 08:45:13 PM
Well, I was at the Ocean State Job Lot in Griswold, CT, and I found these inside:

Half these stores don't even bother remodeling the back rooms. Even the Hobby Lobby that opened in what was Cheektowaga #1079 has a back room still sporting Ames green, even though they did a very nice job remodeling the outside. They kept the registers too, just repainted them.

Repainted registers?   Ick!

Those things were plastic and they got rather warm.
I imagine the paint would be flaking off of them constantly.

Somehow I'd think he meant repainting the counters where the registers were, rather than the actual register units, but maybe not...

In terms of the back areas, that's not surprising with Ocean State - ours (old Grand Union) still has the tiled areas that housed seafood and meat hiding back there somewhere (and other old décor around).  It makes sense, though - when you are setting up a store based on selling items cheaply, continuing that to décor and supplies (we have some of the GU carts as well as several other types) works.

I didn't mention it, but the Tractor Supply completely renovated their section.

My bad, that's what I meant. The counters, not the registers.

Here's the interior of the Hobby Lobby. Looks like the lighting is original. Not sure if the shelves are. I'll try to get a shot of the registers later.

Sorry for distracting from the OP.

Which Tractor Supply?  My old Ames store in Imlay City is now a Tractor Supply.

I had to laugh, had to make a pit stop at that Tractor Supply the other day, and realized they took the original Ames bathroom when they split the store! That was one area they did NOT renovate, lol.

We have a Tractor Supply here in a 1977 era Grand Union building (they used the whole space, but then again it wasn't a very large store being from that timeframe).   They have restrooms in the rear (which must have been "behind the wall" when it was a supermarket, as most were at that time frame and those don't look like too much was done to them either.

I just went there a few weeks ago and they still have the old Ames checkouts. They'll probably never be updated as long as Ocean State is there.
