The St. Vincent de Paul Society is a charitable organization affiliated with the Catholic Church.
All proceeds from the sale of goods at their stores go to assist the poor through programs run by the Society.
The store nearest to me is in a failed Rite Aid location. It's on a busy state highway and appears to do a lot of business. I bought a nearly mint-condition AIWA boombox here (manufacture date November, 1988) for FOUR BUCKS! I bought a slightly used bowling ball for a buck and a half. A very nice lamp for $4 (had to replace the switch, so $6.50 total investment). My daughter bought
a gorgeous white sofa which had been professionally cleaned for $125.00. Good deals!
I used to volunteer at a St. Vincent de Paul thrift store in my junior year of high school.
There used to be one near me in Northeast Philly, used to be an acme in the 50s. Closed a few years ago, just now it looks like it is becoming something, I don't know what yet though, got some good buys there since they seemed to take anything.
Until our resident ShopKo expert ;-) started this topic I wasn't aware that there was a St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store. All I knew of was the organization that helps the homeless and needy.
I was stunned to see my local St. Vincent DePaul Store is now open on Sunday.
The church had always made a very big deal about not having them open on the Sabbath.

Interesting...St Vincent de Paul has two stores in the Tampa Bay area....one is on Nebraska Ave and the other is in Ruskin. I'm not sure what the stores were before, both are small...
I found an original Nintendo Wii console for $20.00 at St. Vinnie's. It was just the console, no sensor bar, Wiimotes, AC adapter, cables, stand or game discs.
I ended up getting a HoJo glass and a Residence Inn mug from the SVDP store in Mason, Ohio, and a stained-glass-style Arby's glass and a little plastic Sears Tower replica from the one in Evendale/Reading, Ohio.
Went by the St. V. de P store over lunchtime to drop off some old stuff.
They had a tractor trailer in the parking lot that was loading some items.
The entrance to the parking lot was partially blocked. They had cones out
and only one lane was open.
As I was trying to exit a woman tried to come in via the single lane.
I guess she did not see the huge tractor trailer parked right in front of her
and got stuck sideways trying to enter the lot.
She then threw her car into park, blocking the only entrance and access to the lot.
She started unloading bags from the back of her car. She started tossing them
into a cardboard container that was sitting at the edge of the driveway.
Apparently that contained outgoing items to be taken in the truck.
An employee came over to her and said "Ma'am, all donations need to
be brought to the back door. Please take those out of there."
Upon which this woman began yelling and screaming at him.
Meanwhile as she threw this fit her car remained in park, blocking the only
access and egress to their parking lot.
Burned a good 10 minutes of my lunch hour as she finished pitching her fit,
retrieved the bags, tossed them into the door, got back in her car and backed
down the driveway.
Rude, inconsiderate moron!
The St. Vincent de Paul store that I pass on a daily basis has just put up
signage indicating that they are now a Pennsylvania Lottery ticket outlet.
So now you can play the lottery at....St. Vincent de Paul?
Not that the Catholic church is opposed to gambling (hello.....bingo games going on
in nearly every parish). But this juxtaposition of things seems very strange.
