Not only do supermarkets (primarily) sell food, many, if not most, compete directly with restaurants in the prepared foods category. Of course, restaurants aren't "retail" in the traditional sense, unlike supermarkets, so I can see leaving things where they are now.
I would respectfully disagree. Supermarkets have long been a distinct category of retailer,
and will continue to be.
