i know so much about jamesway but they were short lived in the retial world 1961-1995

Here's a pic of the old Jamesway at the Dutchess Mall, in Fishkill, New York. It used to be a store called Mays, that was two floors. When Jamesway moved in, the second floor was sealed off.

this jamesway closed in 1993 i first saw it back in 1996 the logo was still up and evry thing if u look to your left u can see the lable scare

Yep that jamesway is still there it was a mays back in the 80's there gonna tear down the rest of the mall to make way for a home depot but the old jamesway bulding is not gonna be torn down the propty is still own by the may company

Here's a possible  roadtrip. I was in the Watkins Glen NY area in 2000. Between Watkins Glen, and the next town south of it, there was a Jamesway store there. I remember seeing the sign out front, which was covered over with blue tarp, whatever was left of the tarp anyways. The store was fairly modern compared to most other Jamesway stores I have seen. 5 years is a long time past, but then again the building still existed 5 years after the chain closed.

I'll have to get out that way then this Summer and get some photos. I'll do what I can for ya as far as photos. I'll check for Receiving signs in the back, the works.

I also have some photos of a Montgomery Wards shortly before it was partially torn down.

Speaking of video, I do have some TV Christmas Commercials from stores such as Zayres, Jordan Marsh, and a couple others (circa. 1986). I'll have to get them ripped at some point and post them.

I have a commercial on tape of the Mays pictured above.  Im guessing it's from the early 80's.  That building is creepy now.

yyep Jmaesway closed 11 under preforming stores that yeas they also closed 23 stores again in 1994 and closed for goon in 1995 dec

at there peak in 1990 they had 134 stores that  droped in 1992 to 123 and again in 1995 with 92 storezs left

i dont know i nevre been to a Jamesway ive just seen closed ones before many of them had that logo and thoughs stores looked newer then the outher ones so i would say that is the logo they used untill there stores closed for good in 1995

Well, the Harleysville one closed in 1991, started to close in 1990. The Warrington one I know closed sometime during the 80's.

they havent opened a store since 1990 and there last big expansion of stores happend in 1988 they dident open any in 1989 in 1990 they had 135 stores they were even bigger then Bradlees:) but they closed 11 stores in 1991 and 23 stores in 1994 and closed the remaning 24 stores in decememebr 1995

Here is a picture of the Harleysville Pennsylvania Jamesway. Its the store all the way down on the left end. > Click Here! Hey Everyone! I thought this would be a great time to submit my photos of my Jamesway truck I have. As a child ironically I collected tracktor trailers of businesses which varied from sports teams to retail. Here are several quick photos for everyone to utilize. This is great timing, do to the real Jamesway truck recently posted, we can compare this toy Jamesway truck to figure out the debatable approximate age of the real 18 wheeler. The Jamesway truck was purchased in 1992. Here are the pics, enjoy everyone. Be well. :bouncing:

Yeh, you are deffinitely right, to my knowledge I believe the Fishkill, NY Jamesway is one of only 5-6 tri-state area locations that are still remaining undisturbed. The Fishkill, store was my favorite Jamesway of them all. I use to shop at 2 or 3 of them regularly, but the Fishkill store was the cleanest, friendliest and most organized store in the area. This store was exspecially superb compared to the Newburgh, NY store or even the Peekskill, NY store. I trully believe that out of the 6-8 department stores in the past ten years that have closed do to the rath of the chinese monopoly called Wal-Mart; Jamesway ranked second place out of my top 10 stores to shop at of all time. This means quality, price, clean, great customer service, and a call beyond the duty to serve the customer and make a happy sale. Here is my current list:

1. Caldor
2. Jamesway
3. Ames
4. Service Merchandise
5. Bradlees
6. Wards
7. Burlington Coat Factory
8. Pergament
9. Best Buy
10. Media Play

This list, is a rough one, but the top several stores I am sure of, they deffinitely deserve the credit, exspecially Caldor, Jamesway & Ames! Well, anyways back to Jamesway. Back when I was a few moons younger, I use to shop as freakwently at Jamesway with my family as a suburbian stupid soccer mom shops at China-Mart today. We shopped so much there, that some of my family members made life time friends with several of the associates in the Fishkill store. When the store closed I specifically remember our family following one cashier we knew from Ames, then when that specific store closed to Jamesway then when the chain closed to Caldor. After that store closed my family still kept in touch, and the cashier whos name I do not recall, had the dignity and ethics, not to go work for the China-Mart being built in Fishkill. Well anyways here is a recept, from me buying one of my first VCR's and take notice to the year, price back then, tax and Jamesway logos. I hope this rare find is enjoyable for all. I have more where that came from, and hopefully I can share it with all of you fellow reail history lovers soon. Peace & Be Well. :)

t though the jamesway was in moheagan lake cause it was in teh moheagan mall or something there was a pergament there and  a walbaums i saw the mall back in 1996 wal marty and home depot took it over  and opend in 1998 right next to a caldor too and put that store out of bizz

Jamesway really did not go out of business because of Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart had very few stores, (if any) in this part of the country (meaning east coast area states) around 1995. One of the first Wal-Mart stores in the Philadelphia area wasn't built until 1997--back when the company still had a little dignity. Jamesway was hurt by other stores of the time that were still successful: A combo of Bradlees/Caldor/Kmart/and even the growing Ames at the time all hurt Jamesway.

wal mart took over many of there locations but i kida blam wal mart for add on to the closings of caldor and bradlees

I used to work for Jamesway. I had a District Office in that Fishkill Jamesway for a while. It was a nice place.

Well...it's 10 years since Jamesway announced their G.O.B. I don't know the exact date, but I know a videotape I have recorded on Thanksgiving Day 1995 has a store closing commercial on it.

Acccording to a New Jersey Map I have - the town is located right at the intersection of a State Route 50 and US Route 9 (main N/S Route) just west of the Garden State Parkway at Exit 20 - so about halfway between the Atlantic City area and Cape May.

A former Jamesway in Cornwells Heights, Pa.. Prior to being a Jamesway it was a Woolco. To bad its a Home Depot today. It was completly gutted.

Nope, this was always a Jamesway. It was located in Oneonta, New York, and my Dad remembers it from when he was a kid. It lasted until the very end in 1995, and was later demolished for a school.

There was a Woolco in Oneonta, but it was on the west end of town, and became an Ames. That too is now closed of course. And, there was also a traditional Woolworth in Downtown Oneonta.

Haven't heard of this store, was it in the mid-Atlantic/Central US area.

Jamesway was a Northeast chain, founded in Jamestown, New York. They closed all of their stores in 1995.

I seriously miss Jamesway. They always had such low prices, they had nice stores, they were friendly and its such a nice name, Jamesway. I hated it when they tore down my Jamesway at the end of 2004. :mad:

Jamesway was alot like ames in a way they dident located there stores in bigger towns like Caldor and Bradlees did the inside of the tsores had a simaler look to them and most jamesways were outdated but at its peek in 1990 thye had 135 stores

Yes, they had a 70's look to them which I liked. Along the top of the walls there would be two stripes, the top red and the bottom yellow, that went all the way around the store. I also like the checkout counters. The register numbers were big white boxes with a blue number on all the side except top and bottom.

Jamesway, somewhat of a cross between 70's and 80's

Ames, their later stores were somewhat modern. They had those advertisements on the walls. They used to be very 70's.
Caldor, my Caldor was plain but had an 80' look to it strange though because it opened in 1979, on the verge of being 80's.

I had never been to a jamesway. what where their stores like. I heard they closed 10 years ago from this time. I heard the nearest one to me was in SAratoga SPrings new york in the saratoga mall (3.5 horus of me). they ones mainly around central new york and ones in fulton new york and oswego new york. an article said Fulton had no competion.

They were great. I actually saw them to somewhat like Ames only they looked very different. Mine was in Harleysville, Pa. and I knew another in Warrington PA. They shut down in 1995 same year as Clover did.

The Saratoga location is long gone. The mall it was housed in is also gone, replaced with a big box center containing Target, Barnes and Noble, Staples, AC Moore, etc.

The Hudson location is now a Staples (and the Goodwill store next to it).

The Catskill location may still be there (it became Ames after Jamesway - but there has been discussion of a Super Walmart in that area) so who knows for how long.

The one in Rhinebeck sat empty for quite a few years but was torn down after Stop and Shop took over the (smaller) Grand Union next door and decided to build a larger store - and now in a twist the Grand Union building sits empty.

I'm originally from that general area. and while I'm not familiar with the exact location in question, I do know that there was a fairly new Jamesway in Bath, NY (within an hour west of there) that seems like it opened just a couple of years before the chain shut down. This store was originally a King's and is now a True Value. I have some toys I bought from there that are still in the original packaging and have the Jamesway price stickers

Not at the end - I didn't even know about the Saratoga one until after the stores had closed.  I don't know if they ever had stores in the Albany area - with one exception.

They did have one store in Rotterdam many years ago - it had to have closed in the 80's, i'd guess.  It was on Curry Road (Curry Road Plaza) - the building still sits vacant to this day (there have been several things mentioned over time, but none have actually happened).  The plaza had probably one other large store (thinking Price Chopper as they are just down the road now and they also were in Hudson in the plaza with Jamesway) and a building with a few small stores - the only thing left now is a bank.

Just to add to Hudson - the last location was what is now Staples/Goodwill, but they had an earlier location - that building was just Jamesway and Price Chopper side by side (think of the Kmart/Grocery combos) and was located behind the now empty theater building (single theater) - the lot is empty but for a partially built skeleton of steel with one block wall that was started probably 10 years ago and never went any further!

The old Rhinebeck store was demolished and a new Super Stop and Shop was built in its place. As BillyGr mentions, the old Grand Union next to the old Jamesway was the Stop and Shop for awhile, before they built the new store on the old Jamesway site. Now, the old GU is vacant.

JAMESWAY DOWN FOR THE COUNT; FACES LIQUIDATION


SECAUCUS, N.J. -- Jamesway, one of the most venerable names in discount retailing, is teetering on extinction after filing for Chapter 11 protection from creditors for the second time in just over two years.

Speculation from the trade indicates that the once-vibrant, 90-unit regional chain is likely to liquidate its assets by conducting going out of business sales and staging aggressive merchandise promotions over the next several weeks.

Jamesway recently informed the U.S. Bankruptcy Court of the Southern District of New York that it is soliciting bids from liquidators for the sale of the company's inventory at some or all of its locations. The 34-year-old chain already has hired New York-based Consolidated Auctioneers to dispose of furniture, fixtures and equipment.

At press time, the chain began deep price reductions across its entire inventory with aggressive markdowns of 30% to 50% on Halloween costumes, masks, wigs, accessories and candy. Other sales will be forthcoming over the next several weeks, according to the company.

In a telling move, the New York Stock Exchange suspended trading of Jamesway's stock Oct. 26 and began taking steps to de-list it.

As of late October though, the chain was operating as usual albeit with 200 fewer central office personnel, who were laid off just days before its Oct. 18 filing.

Among those let go were three top executives: Michael Palmer, chief financial officer; Tom Kiley, executive vice president of merchandising; and Jim Williams, vice president of operations. Palmer's duties are now being handled by senior vice president of finance John Sipala.

In addition, 200 other Jamesway workers were axed at a warehouse in Cranbury, N.J. The chain will also be shutting its corporate headquarters here by Dec. 31, according to a letter received by Secaucus Mayor Anthony Just Sr.

While these workers were given only a paycheck and a list of employment agencies at the time of firing, the chain received court approval to pay all terminated employees up to $4,000 each, the maximum allowed as a priority pre-petition claim under the Bankruptcy Code. These monies are to be used for severance and vacation pay and medical claims under the company's self-insured medical plan.

The court also granted Jamesway permission to pay existing employees up to $4,000 to cover medical claims under the company's medical plan.

The chain has secured $25 million in debtor-in-possession financing from a group of banks led by CIT Group/Business Credit and stores are still receiving some merchandise deliveries, most of them based on a letter of credit, according to Herb Douglas, president and ceo of the chain.

"At this point all 90 stores are open for business," Douglas told DSN. "Our main goal is to come up with the greatest yield for our creditors and equity holders. Therefore, we are aggressively promoting our merchandise and might possibly conduct going out of business sales."

The beleaguered chain's second battle with bankruptcy (the first petition was filed in July 1993) has followed a series of disappointing financial results, tight trade credit and mounting competition from which the chain couldn't recover.

"The discount store pie is being shared by more people, and we're facing a tougher competitive climate than ever before. Wal-Mart has set a new standard in retailing characterized by sharp pricing and well-run stores. I don't think anyone realizes that Wal-Mart has opened 250 stores in the Northeast and mid-Atlantic in the last five years. They came in and must be doing in excess of $5 billion in those markets," Douglas said.

The same forces that have hurt Jamesway have also wreacked havoc on other regional chains including Caldor and Bradlees, which also are reorganizing under Chapter 11.

"We might have come out of Chapter 11 too early," Douglas said. "There were also three changes of top management chief executive officers during the Chapter 11. We came into a very unusual year, the worst year that discount retailing has seen, a year where seven regionals are behind for the year with negative comp store sales. Also, competition has come into the market and has taken an enormous part of the market."

This same competition didn't exist when the chain opened its first store in Jamestown, N.Y., (hence the name Jamesway) in October 1961 and did almost $750,000 in business its first year. From that start, the company grew to be one of the country's leading regional chains. Some even calling Jamesway "the Wal-Mart of the Northeast" in its heyday during the 1970s and early 1980s.

Jamesway's problems began in the early 1990s due to increasing competitive pressures, particularly from Wal-Mart, the model which founder Herb Fisher used as a blueprint for his chain.

These difficult years brought a heavy turnover of top executives. Arlie Lazarus, 22 years with the chain (12 years as president), left in 1990, founder Fisher retaking the helm as acting president. Then former Zayre and Ames exec Peter Hollis became president for a brief period (1992 to 1993). He was followed by the return of Lazarus, who headed the company for a short time after the death of Fisher. In 1993, Joe Ettore, formerly the chain's top apparel merchant, returned after leading Stuarts out of bankruptcy. Ettore left Jamesway in 1994 for the top job at Ames.

Douglas took over in September 1994, and like those who preceded him, tried his hand at restoring the success, profitability and respect that Jamesway once had as a prominent regional discount chain.

During its decline, the chain's store count slowly dwindled from a high of 134 stores in 1990 to its current 90 stores.

Over the past few years, the chain has made several attempts to carve out a unique position in the marketplace, all to no avail.

The last remodels Jamesway ever had:

FIVE REMODELED JAMESWAYS SHOWCASE THE 'DOUGLAS TOUCH'


ALLENTOWN, PA. -- Jamesway, the 90-unit Mid-Atlantic regional chain, put more than just a fresh coast of paint on five remodels last month, provides greater ease of shopping, more brand name merchandise and a new pricing program.

The new stores are located in Newton, Sussex and Oceanview. N.J.; and Allentown and Trexlertown, Pa. Jamesway also plans to remodel 20 additional stores by yearend.

The new stores have a decidedly strong emphasis on soft lines categories like apparel and home furnishings, but also offer a deep selection in all major areas, including toys, consumer electronics and ready-to-assemble furniture.

"Based upon an analysis of our gondolas, we reallocated space around the store," said Herb Douglas, president and ceo. "We removed space from departments like food, health and beauty care, sporting goods and home improvement, and added space to several key categories."

These categories all tie in to five "power walls" established as focal points in the store and created to stimulate excitement as soon as the consumer walks through the door.

The power walls include a display of TVs in the sight & sound department, a wall of Dundee Palatial towels, decorative lamps in assorted colors, ready-to-assemble furniture, both in particle board and real wood, and a shop-within-a-shop of Rubbermaid products.

The stores are all stamped with Douglas' imprint. The new president, who joined Jamesway in September 1994, has placed increasing sales per square foot, improving turns and promoting a pleasant shopping environment as paramount to the chain.

To this end, all angled displays were removed from the planogram, resulting in an "increased capacity of 4% for the total store," according to Douglas.

In addition, all fixtures have been lowered to 60 in. from anywhere between 72 in. and 84 in in order to create better sight lines. This better showcases upgraded presentations featuring a mix of wall, table and standing displays.

Brands were also overhauled, with the focus put on those most recognizable to Jamesway's core consumers-women with children and senior citizens.

"We were carrying too many secondary and tertiary brands," Douglas said. "We are now committed to carrying the right brands in all categories including apparel, domestics, housewares and electronics."

The chain delivers in apparel with brands like Riders, Rustler, Sasson, Wrangler and H.I.S., a Jamesway newcomer in jeans for men, in a stylized area called the Denim Zone.

"A lot of the credit for these displays goes to John Dineen, the divisional merchandise manager for men's, who worked with Wrangler and Rider in developing the presentation," Douglas added.

The chain plans to follow suit with a similar presentation in women's jeans in the fall, albeit with different brands, and for kids sometime in 1996.

The chain has also keyed in on bodywear, newborn apparel, an expanded selection of Hanes and Fruit of the Loom underwear and a color-coordinated presentation in foundations, at the expense of categories like men's dress shirts, which has been downsized.

Fixturing is a key component of the prototype, which uses a mix of Gap-type tables and glass cubes throughout the apparel department. These displays, "become impactable for key items," Douglas said.

Domestics has been given prominent positioning in the stores with several new programs in place.

At the Allentown, Pa., store, the chain gave 24 ft. to a new shower curtain display devoted exclusively to Ex-Cell Home Fashions. The display, which will vary from 20 ft. to 24 ft. depending on store size, offered a broad range of patterns and was cross-merchandised with shower hooks by Cannon and bath mats by Dawson Home Fashions.

Dawson also had an attractive display of its Collage pattern, with four skus of coordinated accessories including shower curtains, plastic and ceramic bathroom accessories, toilet seats, and three-piece towel sets.

In addition, a new 200-count bedding program by Lady Pepperell occupies 12 ft. of space while a 40-ft. display of Cannon's percale sheets impacted one of the back walls.

Coordination and cross-merchandising are much more apparent not only in home furnishings but throughout the new format.

In hard lines categories like paint, automotives and hardware, a pegged presentation merchandised over a shelf has been instituted chainwide. This gives the chain additional space to cross-merchandise products and simplifies the shopping experience for the customer, according to Dale Brown, store manager of the Allentown store.

Overall, Jamesway has heightened customer service by requiring all employees to wear a uniform of a red shirt and dark bottom to enable customers to easily spot a sales associate in the store. These same customers will also benefit from three new pricing programs designed to increase foot traffic in the stores:

    * The Priced Right program features items sold significantly below the regular retail price.
    * Price Cut offers products with retails that have been reduced from the normal retail price at mid-season or for time periods of 30 to 60 days.
    * Special Purchase are selected items, offered weekly, at 45% to 70% below original retail prices.

Consumers can also find special values in the opportunity corner, a 120-sq.-ft. area at the front of the store stocked with seasonal and/or licensed products.

In addition, a wall opposite the registers will have a mix of six skus of the chain's Priced Right items sharing space with at least one seasonal product.

Hmmm, no, I'm positive the one that I'm thinking of was not in Bath, not that I'm saying there wasn't one there, you'd know better than I would, but the one I was thinking of I remember seeing while I was in Watkins Glen that week. It sounds similar to the one you described, being fairly modern compared to many others. The last time I was in the area was in 2001, so this is going back a few years and back then I wasn't a retail Buff like I am now. I know we were going to Grand Union in a town south of Watkins. This Jamesway would have been on the right side travelling south on NYS Route 14.

Being familiar with Bath, perhaps you could shed some light on a Closed Grocery Store there. Was there in 2001 also, In a plaza, which was fairly dead. Trying to remember other businesses nearby. I believe there was a Dunkin Donuts around the corner.

I may be only 13 years old, but I rememebr Jamesway quite well. I was born in 1992, and I used to live in Dover, New Jersey. An Ames was formerly there, and before that it was a Jamesway. I do not know what it is now as I moved to North Carolina afterward and never went back to visit.

Jamesway was a great store. I always used to go there to get out of the house. It was very big and had everything I needed, especially toys. I wish it never closed!

Not from that site - but here are a couple shots of the (Very Former) Jamesway in Rotterdam, NY (On Curry Road - Curry Road Shopping Center).  This store closed quite some time before the chain went out (so probably late 80's I'd guess) and the building has not been used since.

The first shot is of the front of the Jamesway section, the second shows the left end of the building with two large garage doors (I don't know if they did auto repairs as many of the older stores did, or if this might have been a delivery area - there doesn't appear to be much of a road leading to the rear of the building), and the third shows the joined to the right side portion
(this was a grocery store - most likely Price Chopper since:
A: They have a newer store up the road and
B: There was a Golub Corp security van driving in the parking lot).

In addition to these two buildings, there is a section that runs perpindicular to the road (the Jamesway/Price Chopper face the road) with a (still open) bank and a (not sure if open) card shop.

OK, the first shot looks like an empty field - and it is.  It was also the site of the first Jamesway in Hudson (Greenport) on Route 9.  The building sat at the back edge of the paved area you see and was fairly small - only a Jamesway and a Price Chopper (maybe Central Market at that time) with no other stores.  They later moved down the road - the stores had a few other things in them, the longest was a roller rink on one side and an indoor min golf surrounded by small shops on the other - that was there for a couple years (maybe).  The building was torn down to construct a new plaza with a Kmart, JC Penney and some sort of other store (maybe a long gone warehouse club chain if I remember right) - they got as far as a small steel skeleton with one concrete block wall which still stands today (it's off to the left of the photo, just about directly behind the left hand one-way sign) and then someone went bankrupt and it still sits there today (probably about 15 years now).  There was also a small gas station right by the road (the sign was still there, but must be just to the right of the shot) and a single theater (that building still stands - I'll post it in the abandoned buildings section).

The second shot was the later Jamesway also on Route 9 - the store was basically the Staples & Hollywood Video plus the next section of roof to the left - the pizza place has always been at the right end.  It closed about a year before the rest of the chain.

The three shots on the bottom are of the Catskill store.  It was later Ames (as you can see by the sign).  Unfortunately, they started demolishing it a couple days before I got there - what you see left in the bottom shot is about 1/2 of the original building - it has several smaller stores connected to the left side.  They are currently building a new building (on the site of the detached Shop Rite (at the opposite end of the plaza) for these smaller stores, then they will demolish those also and construct a Super Walmart.
However, for this area it isn't necessarily bad {they could have waited to demolish until after I got pitcures though} as there are currently NO Target, Kmart or WalMart in Greene County and only one (Regular) WalMart in Columbia County (that's why most of us go to Albany/East Greenbush or down to visit Amesman in Kingston).

C. Fontaine, if Big Lots wants to update their logo on that store you posted, maybe then they'll clean off both labelscars... Anyway, the Kennett Square, PA location is a former Big Lots as well but it has the current logo. It probably opened with the newer logo because they tend not to update them.

This was the Jamesway in Dover, New Jersey, that closed in 1995, became Ames, and I don't know the fate of it now. The Shoprite that was next to the Jamesway/Ames is still there.

Wow, this brings back memories from 1993 when I was 1 and visiting New Jersey (I moved there from North Carolina in 1999). I spent a lot of time in here. Whenever I would visit my relatives up here, I would stop by the Jamesway.

Ah, that's what I wanted a photo of. I had seen this back in 2001 when I was playing a spot in that parking lot with my Summer Job. The windows were boarded up at the time. From what it looked like to me, it looked like a former Grocery Store to me. I don't remember if there were any label scars there, and if there was, I wouldn't have recognized the name. The Trailer bays would have been on the right side if looking at the store head on. It looks like the Plaza has made a comeback, because when I was there, it was fairly quiet.

There was a Jamesway in Massena, NY and another in Watertown, NY.  The Massena store was built in the mid-1980's and closed in the early 1990's.  It was converted into a P&C Foods.  The Watertown store was under several chains.  Originally a Weston's, then Jamesway, then Zayre and eventually Ames.  The store closed when Ames moved to the old Hills store in the Salmon Run Mall a few years back.  The old Jamesway is now split up into Herb Phillipson's sporting goods, Dollar Tree and Michaels crafts.  I had hoped that Jamesway would have opened a store here in Ogdensburg NY, but they never did.:(

Albany area had Jamesway in Saratoga Mall.  I believe orginally it was near downtown Saratoga but there was a fire and it moved to the mall.  An Ames later took that old spot near downtown Saratoga.  Now there is a dollar tree there.  I also remember a Jamesway located in Schenectady, right off of Altamont Ave.

KMart was off Curry road in a small plaza.  Jamesway was off altamont ave in a plaza. The Jamesway is now a Hannaford.  The other anchor in that plaza was a Shop-Rite and that later became a Great American.  Kmart left curry road probably around 1990.  I am guessing they left not soon after Kmart opened in Rotterdam Mall.  The Jamesway that was off altamont ave. probably left around 1990.

Not at the end - I didn't even know about the Saratoga one until after the stores had closed.  I don't know if they ever had stores in the Albany area - with one exception.

They did have one store in Rotterdam many years ago - it had to have closed in the 80's, i'd guess.  It was on Curry Road (Curry Road Plaza) - the building still sits vacant to this day (there have been several things mentioned over time, but none have actually happened).  The plaza had probably one other large store (thinking Price Chopper as they are just down the road now and they also were in Hudson in the plaza with Jamesway) and a building with a few small stores - the only thing left now is a bank.

Just to add to Hudson - the last location was what is now Staples/Goodwill, but they had an earlier location - that building was just Jamesway and Price Chopper side by side (think of the Kmart/Grocery combos) and was located behind the now empty theater building (single theater) - the lot is empty but for a partially built skeleton of steel with one block wall that was started probably 10 years ago and never went any further!

100% positive this was a Kmart.  I remember getting my picture taken here as a little kid with my sister.  I didn't see these pictures before I posted about this a few minutes ago but this makes things easier to explain!   This was a Kmart and the Jamesway you are thinking about was off Altamont Ave where Hannaford is.  I remember a card shop and a bank in this plaza off Curry.  This Kmart probably has been vacant since 1990.

Here is a pic I took of what is now in the old Jamesway in the Harte Haven Shopping Center off Route 37 in Massena, NY.  The part on the far right was added on after the Jamesway closed.

I miss Jamesway!!!! Out of all the big closed department stores like Ames, Caldor, Bradlees, I miss Jamesway the most. They had nice stores, a nice logo, and a friendly neighborhood store atmosphere to them. There aren't too many remnants left of them, but I do know there is a former Jamesway in Williamstown NJ that has been VACANT SINCE 1995!!! The same plaza also has a vacant Acme that closed a long time ago. There are no remnants of either still left in the plaza except there is a road sign going towards a street splitting off of the black horse pike that has a darkened Acme oval logo in it, with the word Acme just barely readable. All the stores moved up to the giant retail congested area of Turnersville, NJ which is right up the road from Williamstown (and also houses NJ's first Walmart Supercenter). I don't think anyone will ever move into the old Acme and Jamesway spaces. I think it would be cool to have a go-kart race track in the Jamesway, like they did with that former Walmart in Round Rock, TX. That seems like a very cool way to renovate old, former, vacant department stores. :)

Also, here is an interesting article talking about the opening of the Wal-Mart in Turnersville, NJ, which happens to be NJ's first ever Wal-Mart store in addition to being NJ's first Walmart Supercenter, and what the rival stores (including the Jamesway) did to counter-act the opening day sale at Walmart:

I took it on August 2, 2008. It's from my Flickr account, Nintendo85. There's also an abandoned Acme in the same plaza, and I am also curious as to what's inside.....

It's in a distressed old plaza that doesn't have any anchor stores anymore, just small stores such as a fashion bug, a pizza place and a cafe, and a CVS Pharmacy in the parking lot. All the retail stores have moved up to Turnersville, NJ about 5-10 minutes up the road.

That Jamesway is the same one in the picture with the labelscar that is now a Big Lots. Part of it is also now a Family Dollar. The store is in Dunmore, PA (near Scranton) in a former Grant City and later King's. It can be found on the blog "Wyoming Valley Photos".

That Jamesway must have closed in 1991. It was a Price Club store for a brief time, a chain that was sold to Costco in 1992 and closed several stores then. There was a Jamesway in Claymont, Delaware, which was also a Woolco and is now a Home Depot. The Jamesway closed in 1995, however, and then became a Woolworth Outlet for a short time.

This is the Williamstown, NJ Jamesway again. I did not notice this last time, but some company called Castleford Tailors Ltd. is now occupying part of this building. Notice the white cement covering up some of the old Jamesway doors.

come to think of it they left alot of the shelving behind and they left most of the lights on  and the lot was over grown with plants too bad its gone now

The one in Glassboro is NOT vacant and has not been for five years. The left side of the building has been a fitness center since 2002. :huh::huh::huh:

I thought that store in Middletown was the Middletown in Delaware County, PA. Jamesway never had any stores in Delco, where I live, neither did Ames. Ironically, I found Jamesway and Ames carts at a flea market in Middletown Delco once.

The former Woolco/Jamesway at Woodhaven Mall, Bensalem (Cornwells Heights), PA was totally demolished and the Price Club was built.  This was also around the same time the Woodhaven Mall was demalled and became Price Club Plaza, and then Home Depot Plaza (when Home Depot took the Price Club site.)

thats looks like a small jamesway i only been to 2 jamesways they closed when i was 6. one was in Fulton NY 80,000sf now Cayuga Community College Tractor Supply.Tractor supply moving to the other end of the plaza into former Price Chopper 22,000. colege gonna expand. The one oswego 66,000sf they remodled the whole store closed 6 months later. Then P&C took it over Price Chopper just bought the store from P&C Noveber 15 2008

Heres the former Jamesway in Williamstown, NJ again.

Most Jamesway stores were empty for a loooong time especially compared to Bradlees. Examples:

Tamaqua, PA (still abandoned)
Vineland, NJ (still abandoned)
Fishkill, NY (closed 1994, still abandoned)

Harleysville, PA (closed in 1990, was abandoned until 2002)

I once read an article in a music magazine, an interview with Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails) who was raised in a smaller town in PA. In the interview he talked about getting some of his first records or something from Jamesway. The interviewer asked him what Jamesway was, and he explained it as "sort of like an old school Wal-Mart", and said that he didn't think they were in business anymore. The article was from a 2007 edition of Rolling Stone or something.

Here is the former Jamesway in Ledgewood, NJ, picture from Arcadia Realty's website. Now a Wal-Mart. BTW, there is also a small Circuit City in part of this old Jamesway. (Yep, Wal-Mart actually didn't take up the whole space!)

Did most Jamesways look the same?

From what I know most Jamesways did look the same. The usual design would just be a box-like store with a white portion on the front, with the Jamesway logo on it. On both sides of the white portion there was usually a big brown ''stripe'' made out of metal.

I recall the white portion. A notable exception to this design was the one at Duchess Mall, which was a former J.W. Mays.

Jamesway took over many locations from Woolco, and they bought out many stores from a chain called Weston's in the 1980s. They also took over one former J.W. Mays store. Other than that, the majority of Jamesway stores were built new.

This one in Dunmore, PA is a former W.T. Grant and later King's (which closed in 1984). The Jamesway closed with the rest of the chain in 1995, then became Big Lots in 1997.

The signs and checkouts look a LOT like a '90s style Kroger.  Almost disturbingly so.

Those pictures are from 1978. Jamesway was not copying anyone.

Finally took the time to dig out and scan this. Sorry about the red blotch, the camera I had at the time had problems. This was taken not long after the chain closed. This was in Denton, MD and was replaced by a Roses which is still in business. Wal*mart has bought the property across the street so I look for there to be another vacancy soon. Somewhere I have a picture of the Cambridge, MD Jamesway and will get it posted later.

I liked Jamesway, it was one of my favorites. Our artificial Christmas tree came from there, among other things! In a town like Denton they were a pretty big deal-the next biggest store was probably the Dollar General.

im sure there out there somewere i mean i was able to find a picture of the one in carmel ny (of coruse it was already closed at the time ) i may have never shopped at a jamesway but i was able to find a pic of the one in my old town

As promised, here is the Cambridge, MD store. This one isn't so pixelated-I need to go back and rescan the other one to sharpen it up. (I'm no expert!) My notes say that this was taken shortly before it closed.

Some background: Cambridge had one discount department store, Ames, in the Cambridge Plaza shopping center. Late in the 80s Dorchester Square was built just down the road, anchored by Jamesway and Food City. In the early 90s the Ames was deemed an "underperformer" and closed. In no time at all Jamesway went out of business, leaving the town with no such store. Then, KMart bought Cambridge Plaza, replacing the Ames with a big new KMart. Within a year Wal*Mart demolished this Jamesway and moved in there. Soon, KMart closed. There are other stories, but I don't want to rattle-on too long!

Yes, the Cambridge Jamesway was open when I took that one, but my notes say that it was in the process of closing.

The Acme was in the Shoal Creek Mall, just west of the Cambridge Plaza (Ames), Dorchester Square (Jamesway) is a mile or two east, all on US 50. I can remember that Acme from when I was a young kid (70s) and they had the "fish" logo. There was a Safeway in Cambridge Plaza, at the opposite end from the Ames. They built the big new store at the other end of that center but then closed it and Super Fresh took over. A very impressive store for the time it was built (early 80s). The old Safeway became a Fashion Bug. Looks like I'll have to snap some more photos.

That's a great photo, the stonework and sign reminds me of amesman's photo from the Dutchess Mall when they were tearing down the center section that unearthed the interior stone entrance and sign remaining on the former Jamesway store.

This Jamesway opened in 1973 as a Woolco. It was one of the 1991 Jamesway closures. Around 1992, it was torn down for a Price Club wholesale club. When Costco bought Price Club, it closed. The original Wal-Mart in New Britain, CT was a Price Club. It was in a weird location.

The Woolco in Claymont, DE opened in 1969. It was later a Jamesway and Home Depot.

Those photos are awesome dude! The third one really gives you a good look at the interior, too.

BTW, I just checked out that Facebook group and one of the photos on there shows Joseph Ettore at the Seaville, NJ one (now subdivided between Peebles, Dollar General, and a gym).

I used to shop the one on PA-31 in the east end of Somerset, PA.

Why did Jamesway go under (yet Kmart still exists)? It seems they at least in the 80's had much more modern and upscale stores than Kmart, not to mention Walmart, and I have to admit, Ames. They also seemed to be a step above Bradlees, and just slightly less upscale than Caldor.

Maybe just the fact that Kmart was a larger chain overall and had more funds (and backing) to stick around then did most of the smaller chains? 
Also that one or two stores not doing well would impact them less with more stores overall.

Jamesway was farrrr from being that upscale and by the time they closed they had only 92 stores thats alot less then what they had in 1990 it faced significant losses during its last years in business. Also Kmart hasn't been doing so well for along time and it too will soon will end someday.

Bradless and Caldor were much nicer stores

Fay's did exist until 1997, when Eckerd bought it and renamed the stores, but while Thrift Drug (a drugstore division of JCPenney that was absorbed by Eckerd at the same time) was opening new stores well into 1996, I don't know if Fay's was opening stores that late towards the end. The origin of the fire was detemined to be in the pool chemical area of the store. this store i believe was rebuilt afterwords and i think its now a large shoprite now

Check this out...a flea market has opened up in the former Jamesway in Fishkill, New York...and they left Jamesway decor, including the logo, on the walls!

The Grant City near me became a K-mart after Grants went under.
Then the K-mart relocated and became a Super K-mart (which was recently closed and demolished)

The old Grant City is now divided between Giant Eagle and Advance Auto Parts.

Sorry - should have said when the mall was to be demolished they moved out (not sure if it was that it wouldn't have been safe to demolish part while the rest was being used or what).  Also - I seem to remember hearing that some part of the Jamesway/Mays sapce was used for a time after Jamesway closed by the Post Office as a sorting facility or similar?  That might explain it being better maintained.

i think it was used as that. I do remember the jamesway logo still being on the building they also use to have a large sign that you were able to see off of I84

Other than the Jamesway decor, those photos of the flea market look like they could have been taken at a Kmart in the 80's.

There is a flea market in indianapolis in a old Zarye store  it still had all the decor from zayre complete with burnt orange booths from the snack bar and fire ext with zayre tags

Funny how they left the 'brand names' border all around, some parts with the 'J' logo still on it.

The former Jamesway in Lakewood, NJ (famously covered on the site Lost Destinations) is still empty in Bing Maps birdseye view, even though it became a warehouse for the state liquor control board over 10 years ago!

When did the Jamesway in Willingboro NJ (near Trenton) close? It now is some sort of industrial building and looks a lot like the former Jamesway in Lakewood, near Asbury Park.

I've never seen any evidence that there was a Jamesway in Willingboro; the closest one would have been in Mount Holly.  Do you have any links to articles or anything citing it?

No official sources, but given its similarity to the former Jamesway in Lakewood, I'm thinking a certain building on Route 130 in Willingboro not far from the current Acme (just a little bit north of it) just must have been a Jamesway. If you compare this building with the former Jamesway in Lakewood, both have a pattern of eight ventilation units on top and a similar facade. It's hard to tell who now is using the Willingboro site but it looks like an industrial company of some sort going by Google Maps. But I must say it seems mysterious that I never have read anything about this Jamesway anywhere.

Are you thinking of the building on the southbound side of 130 that used to be Costume Gallery, leaving Burlington on the way into Willingboro?  I found out recently that it used to be a Dale's supermarket in the 60's.  JoshAustin610's page on Flickr helped solve this for me, as it was bugging me for years.

what was Jamesway like?

From the ones I was in, I'd say the overall character of the store was closest to Kmart but they were smaller, similar in size to an average Ames. Not real "high-end". When they opened around here my circle of friends made fun of them, only because one of the guys was named James and we liked to pick on him! I still use the Christmas tree I bought there. They weren't around here long before the company went belly-up.

If am I not mistaken, I have recently discovered not one, but TWO fascinating former Jamesways - both located on Allegany Blvd. in Venango County, Pennsylvania.

The first is located at 1351 Allegheny Boulevard in Reno, PA. On Google Street View, the address claims it is in Sugarcreek. Loopnet and the website of the realty company that owns the property claim that the building is an ex-Kmart, but I'm convinced that there was originally a Jamesway here. According to old articles I found on Newspapers.com, a Jamesway opened in Reno in 1966; and one article shows a picture of the store - which looks just like the building in question. In addition, the former Jamesway in Lewistown, PA looks almost exactly alike. That Jamesway, which is now home to a Tractor Supply Co. store, also opened in the 1960s.

The building looks like it is abandoned, and is in a state of disrepair. On Google Street View, there is what appears to be a wide-open garage door built into the facade, and a dumpster out front. I don't know if that means there was something operating in there or what. I suppose it is possible that a Kmart operated in this building at some point, but all the evidence I've come across suggests that it was originally a Jamesway.

The second former Jamesway is located down the road in Franklin, PA. It is split between a Dollar General, a Chinese buffet, a vacant space that last held a Quality Farm & Fleet store (which still has the sign up, over a decade after the chain went out!) and, all the way on the left, some sort of warehouse. I don't know when this store opened or if it made it until the chain's final days. Venango County's online property records do not show when the building was built. If I had to guess, I would guess that it was built in the 1980s.

I hope we have some Western Pennsylvanians here who can shed some light on these stores!

Sorry, this Western PA guy just never spent much time up in Venango County.

The former Jamesway location I'm familiar with is a plaza on PA Route 31 just east of
Somerset, PA.  I'll try and snap some pix next time I'm up that way.
