Title: Arby's
Post by: store215 on January 08, 2005, 05:31:19 PM
I love Arby's, but there are very few near me (Actually i can only think of one that is remotely close by in Feasterville, PA--Very old location). They remind me of the almost-dead Roy Rogers. I am suprised there isn't more of them, especially with all this lo-carb anti McDonalds stuff.

I know..heh There hasn't been an Arbys in Kingston since the early 90's, but, they now wanna build another one.

Yeah, low-carbys.  I love their roast beef, even though they are expensive.  Actually, there is a Roy Rogers near me too, right off of Hwy. 84 in Sturbridge, MA.

ARby's downsized in the 90s. There used to be one in Laconia NH and now its D'angelo's.

2 years ago I saw a vacant ARby's in West Roxbury (a part of Boston).

10 years ago I saw a vacant Arby's in Rutland Vt. THERE USED TO be an ARby's in Saco Maine but it closed 11 or 12 years ago and there was an Arby's where Pizzeria Uno is in South Portland MAine, and a couple years later ARby's opened in the Maine Mall Food Court.

There was an Arby's in the Fox run MAll in Newington NH, but it closed and the ARby's in Manchester New hampshire closed 7 years ago when the food court in the Mall of NEw HAmpshire (Arby's was in the mall of NH's food court) was being redone.
The only ARby's left in New hampshire is in the pheasant lane mall food court (it is in Nashua)

Arby's has become very popular in the midwest.  We used to only have Arby's in the mall food courts, but now here in my hometown alone we have 3, plus the one in Henderson KY is open 24hr per day.

one near us had the old sign too. It was replaced oh, maybe 3 or 4 years ago. It was pretty rough. Our local Arby's was built in 1990 and was demolished earlier this year after 14 YEARS of operation. It's replacement? a credit union. I can see why- it was a very small location and was NEVER busy. That's ok- we have another not far away that's from the 60's!! From the drive thru, you can see the back of the orginal roof behind the new one:bouncing: BTW Arbys, along with Mcdonalds, has had the same logo since the 70's.

Their roast beef sandwitch is REALLY good

My favorite item on Arby's menu is their Chicken Bacon N' Swiss sandwhich, followed by (of course) their yummie Curly Fries.. and a side of cheddar sauce!

The first shot is the Arby's in Cobleskill on Route 7.  I think this may have been where the Hardees was formerly, but if so the building has been so remodeled/rebuilt that you wouldn't know it.

The second is the Oneonta location, on Route 7 next to the Oneonta Plaza.

A shot of the old Arby's sign on the Brewerton Road(U.S. 11) location in Syracuse. Let me tell you the tale of how I got this shot, and the reason I only have one shot of it. When I left my motel(the old Howard Johnson's turned Red Carpet Inn), I walked up the road to the BK to eat lunch, then I walked up to grab a few pics of the Arby's sign(I had discovered it the night before when I went to Wegmans on Taft Road). Along the way, I snapped pics of the Wendys, Taco Bell, MacDonald's, etc. Before I got to the Arby's, I went into the P&C to check out the soda selection. That was a mistake, because when I got back outside, it was pouring a$$ rain outside. Now, I didn't walk all that way for nothing, so I went to the Arby's, snapped only one picture(because it was raining so hard, my camera was getting wet(not a good thing). Then I had to make the mile long trek back to the motel in the pouring rain. But I got the shot, and I'm hopefully heading back out to Syracuse in September, so I can get more. Here you go. Enjoy!

The one locally is pretty wierd. I applied when I was sixteen, and they threw my application in the trash, as I saw them do it... I needed a job and they where hiring.

I went to see if they had breakfast, they did at some odd time in the morning - no cars where in the parking lot... how did a manager get there? They where open tho. Isn't it required to have a car if you manage? I went there again today because they advertise breakfast now, but only one car in the parking lot this time. They are hiring, but damn, how they stay in bussines is beyond me... no one ever goes there and the food is too damned expensive.

The shape and design of that Arby's building in Augusta, Maine reminds me of the old Dairy Queen we had here in Ogdensburg (NY).  Especially the roof in the front.  I wonder if that's what could have been there before Arby's?

I wouldn't think that a fast food joint that sold mostly roast beef sandwiches would stay in business. There aren't any Arby's in RI that I know of. Walt's Roast Beef seems to keep them at bay. There was an Arby's in the Emerald Mall but I haven't been in the food court lately so I am unsure if it is still there or not.

Arby's will be opening very soon in Newington on the Berlin Turnpike. It is in the former Roy Rogers building. Since I am always down to Wal-Mart I have seen the progress being made. Just what the world needs, another credit union...*sigh*
http://www.pressherald.com/news/Arbys-site-sold-to-credit-union.html

Arby's site on Forest Ave. sold to credit union

PORTLAND â€" The site of an Arby's on Forest Avenue has been sold to a credit union, ending its days as a fast-food location.

The property was purchased by cPort Credit Union. It had been owned by Butler Forest Investors. Terms were not disclosed.

The property's days as an Arby's date back to the late 1970s, when the restaurant was opened by Ken and Jim Raffel, sons of one of the founders of the roast beef sandwich chain. The chain was launched in 1964 by Leroy Raffel â€" Ken and Jim Raffel's father â€" and his brother, Forrest.

Arby's stands for RB's, for Raffel Brothers.

The chain was sold in 1976 and Jim Raffel frequently clashed with the new corporate owners over his desire to serve non-Arby's items in addition to the chain's fare. At one point, he opened a restaurant called Emily K's inside the Arby's, selling roasted chicken and other items.

Arby's sued, and the Raffel brothers opened up a new restaurant, Raff's, on the site, before they changed it back to an Arby's in 1998.

Well that's sad...

Restaurants are closing and are replaced by banks and credit unions.

Gas stations are closing and being replaced by pharmacies and cell phone stores.

Frankly I'm amazed this Arby's lasted as long as it did.  Competition for the fast food dollar is fierce in the part of Portland it was in (the Hannaford Plaza Subway couldn't have helped) and they fell behind on renovations as revenue fell, creating a death spiral not unlike the demise of the Bonanza in Augusta. Limited access was a hindrance, too; if you approached this Arby's from the north you had to turn onto Baxter Boulevard and into the Hannaford Plaza to get there. And then, of course, Arby's as a concept has seen better days. Sentimentality on the part of the Raffels must have played a role in keeping this unit open well past its expiration date.  Of the other Maine freestanding Arby's, Auburn is in marginal shape, while Topsham, being a newer unit, is quite nice inside.  I haven't been to the Augusta or Waterville locations.

Update Dec. 2011: The former Portland Arby's has been demolished.

Update Jan 2012: Here's a photo album of the demolition process and construction of the credit union.  cPort also demolished the former Bonanza in Augusta.

* Arby's introduced a new ad campaign for their freshly-sliced roast beef and turkey products, comparing themselves to other chains, like Subway for example, since Arby's slices their meat in-store, and not at an out-of-town factory.

I wonder how many months/years it will take to get franchisees to conform their signage to the new logo.

I hope a good while, the new logo is definitely a downgrade. The old logo the A and y lined up with the hat.
The new logo just reeks of trying to be modern with all lowercase, also why is the hat 3d but not the text?
Stupid, this is how NOT to update a logo imo.

The local Arby's in Elyria, Ohio, on the other side of SR57 from Midway Mall closed this past December, and was bulldozed yesterday, according to an article in today's Morning Journal newspaper. Sad to see it go! This location opened in 1986. Apparently, the owners thought it'd be best to bulldoze the building and sell the land, rather than bring the building up to code.

There was a second location inside Midway Mall itself, but it closed a while back. Some of its neighbors in the Food Court there were A&W Hot Dogs & More, Dairy Queen/Orange Julius, Chao Praya Chinese Eatery, and McDonald's (back then, one of THREE in that immediate vicinity - the other two were right across from this Arby's and attached to a BP on an adjacent corner to the mall). All of those restaurants are gone, and even their 1st and 2nd replacements are gone as well.

Here is a link to the news story, with a video of the razing:

There is still an Arby's around me that has this kind of a sign. It is either in Ravenna or Kent, Ohio.

It is very sad that they no longer change the light bulbs in these original signs. I wonder if they stopped manufacturing them?

Have you guys seen the newest commercial for Arby's King's Hawaiian Roast Beef Sandwich? It features a new logo for Arby's. This logo marks a return of the classic western font (even if it's slightly different) inside the of the ten gallon hat. The logo hasn't been featured anywhere else yet. Not even Arby's.com has the new logo on their website.

Arby's used to have one of their old cowboy hat restaurants in King of Prussia PA that moved in the 80's to King of Prussia Mall, losing all the charm of the old one, which now is a Starbucks. I must say the building looks much more beautiful as Starbucks than it did Arby's.

One of these still exists along Banksville Road in Pittsburgh.  It had the original "big hat" sign
for many years.  But it finally gave up the ghost and has been replaced with a modern one.

Originally built without a drive thru, there is now a makeshift afterthought one which is quite strange.
It requires you to enter from the far left and to basically circle the parking lot.  The store is basically
built into a hillside, so you can't go around it from behind.

There was another store like this along PA Route 51 in Brentwood, PA for many years.
It had the original sign throughout.  It was demolished about two years ago and was
replaced with a Dunkin Donuts.

I think what happens in a lot of cases is that the local township or borough passes a signage ordinance
that limits the size of roadside signs.  A lot of the Arby's big hats were grandfathered in.  But when they
finally wear out they are forced to go with a replacement that complies with current code.

I just found out that in 1988 Arby's had 2 locations in Southington, Connecticut! I've been reading online old issues of The Southington Observer and there is an ad for The New Arby's being open at 172 Queen Street. I don't know how long Arby's was there, but 172 Queen Street is now Tokyo Sushi and has been for many many years.

The 2nd location was the original and still open location on Meriden-Waterbury Road in the Plantsville section of town.

A worker at the restaurant said Thursday that the dining room would be closed until May 2nd for remodelling. The restaurant’s kitchen is still operational and is serving customers through the drive-through.

roast beef, topped with Arby's sauce, melted cheese and curly fries.

Fries on the sandwich is a Pittsburgh thing (Primanti Brothers) that seems to be
percolating out to other parts of the country.

Arby's website claims that the calorie count on this sandwich is 810.
Not sure I can believe that from looking at it.  Has to be into four digits at least.
