I like Market Basket because they are an independent chain facing Shaw's, Stop & Shop and Hannaford. They have good prices and many supermarket are not too large. They have an "old school" style and don't have pharmacies in the stores.

Most market baskets are in the Lawrence Mass/Lowell Mass/ Haverhill MAss/Nashua Nh/SAlem NH area.
There are 4 in NAshua (1 on Daniel WEbster hwy and 3 on Amherst st), 3 in billerica (all on the same road), 3 in haverhill, 3 in Lowell, 2 in Methuen, 2 in Fitchburg Mass, 2 in Tewksbury, 2 in Salem NH, 2 in Plaistow NH.

This other Market Basket is one of the two in Tewksbury, Store Number 22 I think. The whole plaza was rebuilt and Market BAsket moved into a bigger location. I went to the old one once and it was small and old.

IT is the one on WAter st in teh Central Plaza (I saw this plaza and it is VERY OLD) The store is store number 13 and I believe opened 1970 and the store is said to be 40,000 square feet. and it is said that the plaza may be renovated and remodeled and the MArket Basket may move into the vacant STuart's (Still vacant and the outlne of the lettering showed and 62,000 square feet).

the store on the very left is MARket basket. it is like store number 21 and said to be 30,400 square feet. The store is in Burlington MAss.

This is the market basket in Concord. In the capitol Plaza. IT is like store number 35. and is said to be about 25,000 square feet. the building was remodeled alittle because whole plaza got remodeled.
The other MArket BAsket in Concord on Fort Eddy Road got expanded and remodeled about 10 years ago and is like store number 34. The fort Eddy MArket BAsket is said to be 60,000 square feet and used to be white and the other quarter of the building (left side) brown. IT expanded into a half of a vacant Walgreens that closed 10 years ago.

This is the market bakset in the Tri City plaza in Somersworth. IT is like store number 38 and said to be 58,000 square feet and was originally 45,000 square feet. IT was expanded in the mid-late 1990s.

This is the market basket in Leominster MAss. It is store number 16 and said to be 50,000 square feet. The store's original location ,from what outdated artcles said was in the SEarstown MAll next to Filene's where Toys r us is and Kimco says the old store was 31,535 square feet. The worcester article said the store moved to its currently location in June 1991.

This is the sign of the market Basket in Lowell in the Sunrise Shopping Center.
The building is white and in the last right of the building is light brown. The lettering is darkish red and somewhat small.
REcently I went by the one in Londonderry and the lettering was originally very small and market lettering was on top of basket lettering and they made the lettering (saying Market BAsket) big and next to each other.

This other Market Basket is one of the two in Tewksbury, Store Number 22 I think. The whole plaza was rebuilt and Market BAsket moved into a bigger location. I went to the old one once and it was small and old.

I didn't knew the story behind that store closing... Shaw's will get a prime location with that move. I thought that Market Basket decided to close one since there was two stores not far from each other. Seabrook also has two MB close from each other..
The one at the Seabrook Southgate Plaza now has a smaller sign, the old one was quite large!

the one that closed in plaistow WAS VERY VERY VERY SMALL!!! the one in seabrook plaza is small but bigger than the one that closed in plaistow.
I was looking at a local website online which contains copies of old local newspapers and came across these pics from the Gouverneur Tribune-Press newspaper. There was a Market Basket on East Main Street in Downtown Gouverneur which opened in September 1950. I don't know when but this store eventually changed over to Acme, which was Market Basket's parent company. The store only measured about 6,000 square feet and a new Acme was planned just down the street in 1964 but was never built. The Gouverneur store eventually closed in September 1971. The building was occupied in the early 70's by a couple of discount stores before becoming a mini mall in 1977, which is still open today. The first pic here is of the store when it first opened in 1950. The second is the store when it closed in 1971.

The former Bradlees and Stop&Shop combo store that opened in the 60's on Elm Street in Manchester, NH will once again be turning into a retail location. Market Basket is to aquire this property and convert it into a grocery store during the summer/fall 2010. This will be a great asset to the people that live downtown.

Part of my in-laws live in Salem and one of them says that they'd keep both open since the market could bear both. With Shaws at risk and so expensive, the older store can survive without the bells and whistles of the new location.

LONDONDERRY - Shoppers mobbed the new Market Basket supermarket in Londonderry even before it officially opened its doors for the 7 a.m. grand opening Sunday.
An estimated 200 to 300 people formed the first surge, prompting store managers to temporarily close doors before allowing another eager wave of customers inside, said David McLean, operations manager of the Market Basket at 5 Garden Lane off Route 102.
"There were such waves of people that hit at first," he said.
"It was just a steady stream of cars and people coming in to the building. We took the liberty to close the doors just to let some people get out," McLean said.
Registers never stopped ringing since the first shopper was let in the door early at 6:15 a.m., McLean said.
The 108,000-square-foot supermarket is the largest Market Basket in New Hampshire, McLean said.
It replaces a 51,000-square-foot store located in the same plaza that shut its doors at 7 p.m. Saturday.
He estimated a total 5,000 shoppers would pass through the store by day’s end at 7 p.m.
A typical Sunday draws about 3,000 shoppers, he said.
Londonderry Police Sgt. Mike McCutcheon said "traffic was crazy," but under control.
"It was like Christmas," he said of the crowds.
The enlarged store also features a sit-down cafe and prepared foods section, McLean said.
"This is the type of store we build now," McLean said.
A new Market Basket slated to open in Hooksett at summer’s end and another planned for downtown Manchester will follow this model, he said.
In April, Bedford planners approved a Market Basket for the intersection of Route 114 and Donald Street.
But Hannaford Bros. Co. has sued the town over the square footage of the proposed Market Basket, arguing that the Zoning Board acted improperly when it granted a variance that allowed the store to nearly double the square footage allowed for commercial buildings.
The suit alleges the zoning board’s decision discriminates among area businesses.
In December 2008, Hannaford opened a 36,541-square-foot store at Route 101 and Jenkins Road in Bedford.
As for the prospect of a new store bringing crowds to Bedford, Town Manager Russell Marcoux said Sunday night he was undaunted.
"Any business that’s going to open and bring those kinds of crowds is going to be great for the economy," he said. "We look forward to it when it happens here."

Yeah, last summer our Ocean State Job Lot had a special aisle with all kinds of cookout needs - I think every "Paper goods" (like cups, plates, silverware etc.) had a different store brand logo on it - some from local stores (Stop & Shop being one - probably leftover stoplight logo items) and some from other parts of the country (I remember HEB which is Texas?).

New Market Basket opens early for eager shoppers

The parking lot was filled by 7 a.m. for the grand opening of the 80,000-square-feet supermarket employing about 400 workers.
HOOKSETT - Early birds filled the aisles of the new Market Basket supermarket about 5:30 a.m. on Wednesday, taking advantage of grand opening specials and incentives.
“You cannot beat these prices. I am fully going to take advantage of this,†said Sue Gancarz of Hooksett, who filled two grocery carts and spent about $350 in groceries, toiletries and cleaning products. “We are a society of convenience, and this is just ideal for me.â€
At the checkout line, her cart was filled with pounds of chicken, ground beef, lobsters, steamers, haddock and more at reduced costs.
The doors of the new Market Basket off of Exit 10 were scheduled to open around 7 a.m., but cars were in the parking lot well before that, prompting the manager to officially open the store a little early.
“We just ushered them in,†said Ray Castles, the store manager.
The parking lot was filled by 7 a.m. with hungry shoppers anxious to checkout the new 80,000-square-feet supermarket employing about 400 workers.
Seafood seemed to be a popular choice for many shoppers, who were spending $3.99 a pound for lobster, $2.99 a pound for sirloin and $1.99 a pound for deli cheese.
“This is what I expect at Market Basket,†said Ron Cain of Manchester, who was previously traveling to the Londonderry or Concord Market Basket facilities to shop.
Everyone was raving about the prices.
Susan Querze of Manchester said she has been waiting years for a Market Basket to open closer to her home. She maintained at least 70 percent of the products at Market Basket are cheaper than the same items at other grocery chains.
“This is better than winning the lottery,†she said while browsing the bakery of the new store. “Hopefully other stores will get on the band wagon and reduce their prices like this.â€
The Hooksett store is the 64th Market Basket to open, according to David McLean, operations manager for DeMoulas. It features a sushi bar, fresh-made pizza bar, Market's Cafe, Market's Kitchen and an in-house coffee shop with cafe tables and free wifi service.
McLean expected up to 6,000 people to walk through the supermarket on Wednesday, and said he received a lot of positive feedback about the design of the store and its products.
Norman Milliard Sr. of Hooksett described the store as impressive, saying he could continue shopping all morning.
“I was one of the first ones here today. This store is so great for the Hooksett area,†he said. “I'm so happy with it.â€
Will Market Basket ever expand into Maine? Vermont?
They have great selection and prices, it would work for sure even though Maine is Hannaford country and has Shaw's. Vermont has a lot of Price Choppers and Shaw's.
In the near term it makes a lot more sense for Market Basket to fill gaps in their existing footprint (e.g. Greater Manchester) and to renovate and expand their existing stores as needed. Expansion into Maine and Vermont will largely depend on what happens with Shaw's; I doubt Hannaford or Price Chopper are going anywhere. Additionally, the invasion of ALDI and Dollar General will have ramifications for all supermarkets with a strong price image like Market Basket.

It's strange that the Portsmouth Market Basket has not been renovated or expanded yet. That location is so busy, the parking lot is nearly full at any time of day.
I just thought about something, it's quite possible that Demoulas is waiting for Kmart to close just like what happened to the Sears-Kmart in Londonderry. Portsmouth's Kmart is old and dated and I have rarely seen more than 30 cars parked in front of the store. Yes it survives but i'm sure Demoulas is betting on it closing at some point to build a new store while the old one remains open!
I'm sure Market Basket would entertain moving to the Kmart in the Marshall's (Portsmouth) Plaza if Kmart vacates but that creates a new problem - what to do with the now-former Market Basket storefront. They'd probably have to subdivide it for it to be marketable. I wouldn't count on Kmart moving out anytime soon, but who knows - maybe they'll pull a Montgomery Ward and exit the region all at once.

I think I've figured out the key to their success, and it goes beyond price (and besides, if price was all that critical in CR's rankings Walmart wouldn't have ranked dead last.) I went to the Rochester, NH location on a Saturday afternoon this weekend and the place was packed. Every register was open, and on the PA there was an announcement that one of their baggers was celebrating his 18th birthday and to visit him at register #5 to congratulate him. When's the last time you've heard an announcement of that nature in any store of any sort?

I always liked MB but I feel they're better than ever. They have competitive prices, great selection and the stores are packed. This means that they're good. The renovated stores also are very nice. They're larger but still have that old school Market Basket feeling.

MANCHESTER â€" The latest Demoulas Market Basket is expected to open Tuesday on Elm Street, the second-largest supermarket in the grocery store chain, a company official said.
On Wednesday, shelves were already stocked with non-perishable dry goods.
Workers were putting finishing touches on the outside and interior of the store, which is located on the site of a former Rockwell Automation factory.
The store has 21 aisles and about an equal number of cash registers.
Mayor Ted Gatsas, who will be on hand for the 8 a.m. ribbon cutting Tuesday, predicted the store will cause a renaissance in the south end of Elm Street. And the editor of a Massachusetts-based magazine that monitors the grocery business predicted lower prices in grocery stores throughout the city.
“They (Market Basket) are going to be the low price leader,†said Mike Berger of the Griffin Report of Food Marketing. “There's going to be a price war between all of these stores. Who wins, I don't know.â€
The Elm Street supermarket is about 90,000 square feet, second-largest in the chain, said Jay Rainville, director of operations for Demoulas Super Markets Inc. Construction and site work costs amounted to $9.2 million, according to building permits. The figure does not include site acquisition.
Market Basket stores in Hooksett and Londonderry may see a fall off in some business as Manchester residents elect to shop at a closer location, he said.
Other supermarkets may also see empty aisles next week.
Hannaford, Shaw's and Stop & Shop all have supermarkets in the Manchester area. Stop & Shop has a supermarket about a half-mile from the new Market Basket.
The opening is not being ignored.
“To be honest with you, we certainly prepare our store, any store, for any competitive opening,†said Judy Palmer, spokesman for Stop & Shop. She would not discuss details about the preparation.
She said Stop & Shop successfully competes with Market Basket stores on the North Shore and Fall River areas of Massachusetts.
Gatsas said grocery stores are a key component to neighborhood revitalization.
“It's going to explode the south end of Elm Street,†he said. Buildings across Elm Street will be redeveloped, as will property further south.
Gatsas said his office receives more calls about the Market Basket opening than any other topic.

MANCHESTER â€" Customers lined up even before the doors opened for Market Basket's 460 Elm St. grand opening Tuesday.
The store let them in early, operations manager David McLean said.
Stephanie Pike of Manchester said she used to go to Market Basket in Nashua, then switched to Hooksett when that store opened. The new downtown Manchester site, she said is about 15 minutes closer to home.
“This will last us for a little while,†the mother of 10-month-twins, Axel and Eva, said of her full-to-the-brim shopping cart.
The new store â€" which has 500 employees and 21 aisles spread over 90,000 square feet â€" is the first Market Basket store in Manchester.
President and CEO Arthur T. DeMoulas said at the ribbon-cutting: “It took us 95 years to get here, but we're here and we're excited.â€
â€We started in 1917, when Demoulas Supermarkets began,†McLean said.
While the business is still called Demoulas Supermarkets Inc., the Market Basket brand has supplanted the Demoulas name on all its stores. But longtime customers still call it Demoulas, said McLean, who has been with the Tewksbury, Mass.-based chain for 36 years.
“We are just humbled by the turnout,†he said. “We thank our customers very much.â€
He expected 5,000 to 6,000 customers for the day.
It is Market Baskets's 65th store overall and 28th in New Hampshire. Two more are planned to open within two months in Brockton and Sagamore, Mass.
A Market Basket in Bedford at Donald Street and Route 114 continues to progress.
“The pricing structure is documented by independent surveys as being about 20 percent below the average supermarket, some more, some less,†McLean said. “We were just recognized (by Consumer Reports) as being the top New England chain as far as cleanliness, service, price and perishables,†he said.
Among the longtime customers at Tuesday's opening were Scott and Anna Mugica, now of Manchester, but who met as co-workers at Somerville, Mass., Market Basket, almost three decades ago. Today, their son, Nicholas, 17, is working for the new Market Basket in Manchester.
“We started in Somerville, and Mr. McLean was our manager,†Scott Mugica said. “We met in 1984,†Anna Mugica said, “and now the rest is history.â€
“I said to him as we pulled in, we waited 10 years for this,†Mrs. Mugica said.
For the grand opening, about 100 vendors and technicians populated the store. Sal's Pizza, a supplier of dough for Market Basket's brick-oven baked pizza, was helping with set-up.
Freshly made salads and fruit cups are prepared on site, McLean said. The sushi bar is run by a vendor, Niji Sushi. The Manchester store has an on-site bakery, butcher shop and a large fresh seafood section. In New Hampshire, the stores offer beer and wine. The Market Basket Cafe has a seating area with WiFi at the front of the store and serves espresso, latte, fresh orange juice and soft serve ice cream.
Store manager Peter Gulezian, who came to Manchester, from Market Basket in Lee, is a 29-year employee.
“The excitement of seeing the look on the customers' faces, how happy they are that we're finally in the city of Manchester and open for their convenience, I get a lot of satisfaction out of seeing our customers satisfied,†he said.
Store hours are 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday.

Apart from one summer when they experimented with closing one hour later, that's been their hours as long as I can remember. One of the keys to their business model is to limit operating hours to minimize labor costs.
Here in Maine the only discount store or supermarket still open 24 hours a day is the Walmart Supercenter in Farmington. All others close at midnight or earlier. I was spoiled in the 80s when Zayre, Shaw's and Shop 'n Save (plus Purity Supreme over the state line in Rochester, NH) were open around the clock. Those days are long gone. Price Chopper still opens most of its stores 24 hours a day, a throwback to an earlier era.

I think Market Basket would expand into Rhode Island or into the Springfield MA market before they would expand into CT. Frankly I think even expanding into York County in Maine (like that vacant Lowe's in Biddeford) would be a more likely prospect.

I'd rank them York County, then Rhode Island, then Springfield. Stop & Shop's failure in York County makes Market Basket the only real chain that could take on the Shaw's/Hannaford stranglehold there. The number of chains that could take on Stop & Shop/Shaw's in Rhode Island and Stop & Shop/Big Y in Springfield are greater.

Right.
I think it should move smoothly given the state of the economy and the fact that the property is already built and was retail before.
The only down sides that I see are these:
1)The store would not be easily accessible and close to the street because it's at the back corner of the property and has to be reached through the small rotary. - But they would have awesome visibility from I-95 where Lowe's had a big sign.
2) Lowe's was a hardware store. A grocery store will generate way more traffic daily throughout the day. It could be an issue.
3) Maybe Target has an agreement to be the only retailer that can sell groceries in at the Crossing?
4) Hannaford could do what they often do..
Other than that I believe it would be a perfect start for them in Maine with an almost brand-new building. People are looking forward to get a Market Basket and it will sure be a success. It would give them a sense of what is the potential in Maine. Stop & Shop failed in Kennebunk but Market Basket will thrive in Biddeford.

I wouldn't put it past Market Basket to move into the Kmart location in Auburn, ME if they close, too. It's located directly across from Shaw's, and at 105K gross square feet it's almost perfectly suited for this kind of redevelopment. There's ample parking as well (seriously underutilized at the moment, as you might expect.) It would challenge DSM's ability to keep it stocked with perishables, but with Shaw's on the ropes the time is ripe for DSM to challenge Maine's longest-lasting grocery institution (founded in 1862) on its home turf. If Biddeford takes off like almost everybody seems to think it will, DSM's continued northward expansion (and the build-out of distribution infrastructure to support it) seems inevitable.
Also there is Augusta where a Stop & Shop was planned at the Augusta Crossing. Most likely it will never happen. Not many retailers will want to invest in building a new store there but Market Basket could do it and would thrive. If they reach their goals in Biddeford, the Augusta space in a similar shopping center could become an option.

This is more necessary than people think. The Chelsea and Salem Baskets are packed almost around the clock and on weekends can become often unbearable and a location between the two will take the pressure off of both locations.
Good point. Market Basket is one chain where a little cannibalization is a good thing!

Like most Kmart and Sears locations, it's likely toast as soon as the lease is up. SHLD is less an operator of retail stores than it is a hedge fund/REIT. The highest and best use of nearly any space current occupied by a Kmart or Sears isn't its current use by a long shot.

Market Basket renovated several stores elsewhere but this locations remains untouched so I assume that DeMoulas is waiting to see what happens with Kmart and they may know when the space could become available before investing in the current store.

And actually, Market Basket is one of the worst offenders; they usually target Stop & Shop. Hannaford has a technical basis for their complaint re: North Conway, but the plans were the way they were because of the restrictive covenant Shaw's already had in place. Hannaford knows this, of course, and they're playing their card for all it's worth.

There's certainly a lot of underutilized big box retail space in Maine. The Kmart in Auburn and the Lowe's in Windham spring to mind. The section of Payne Road in Scarborough by Cabela's could use a real shot in the arm, too.

Kmart or the former Home Depot in Bangor would be nice. There is a spot for a Stop & Ship at the Augusta Crossing. We all know that Stop & Shop gave up on Maine so MB could jump in. In Lewiston there is the former Sears.
They are really expanding fast and furious. I hope they don't expand themselves out of business.
With the amount of business they're doing, they have enormous cash flow and a huge cash hoard. The only limiting factor for them is their distribution center capacity, which will keep their expansion at a manageable pace. They appear to have the management depth to handle the pace of expansion they have undertaken, which is a key advantage over Wegmans. MB will be well-positioned to pick up the pieces when Shaw's does the inevitable mass closures under Cerberus.
This older, smaller store was the odd store out as MB prepares to open just up Amherst Street in the old Sears Essentials in Somerset Plaza (which Market Basket's real estate arm owns.) This would be, IIRC, only the second MB store to close in the chain's history.

Keeping a large brand new store that close to an older smaller one would not have been good for the second store.
Wonder what will happen in Seabrook where two stores are also very close and only one is large and more recently renovated.

Bangor is pushing it, unless they develop their distribution infrastructure. Auburn or Augusta is about as far north as they could go at this point, I think.

how busy was it opening day
It was very busy by 7:30 or so, but it was a happy sort of busy, with none of the nastiness I've often encountered on Black Friday (which I now avoid like the plague.) The wider aisles and lack of clutter really helps move things along. I took my sweet time navigating the store, timing my checkout to coincide with Arthur T.'s ribbon-cutting speech. There was no shortage of personnel to handle the rush. The only real slowdown I ran into was an inexperienced cashier who was slow in scanning my purchases. Later in the day, as WGME's report stated, they had to close the doors to new shoppers for a time because the building was at capacity.

Interesting takes on growth with respect to Market Basket. If they take on debt they can conceivably buy another regional chain such as Shaw's, Big Y or Price Chopper. Yet, with more debt would they take on additional leverage that would force them to increase margins? Would a new CEO destroy the synergy between management and employees and thus their connections with the customer base? Even with its low pricing Market Basket already has healthy margins which has allowed the chain to take advantage of growth opportunities in the past couple of years. I think the letter to associates was a big flop: in essence, they were told "shut up and do your jobs."

They're pretty disciplined about expansion and have limited distribution capacity. Right now they're concerned with filling in existing territories and expansion into contiguous areas. When you are in the store locator on the ShopRite site, click on the store name - it takes you to whatever the ownership is (or at least this one did, since all our stores here in upstate NY are part of this group).

I think Dirigo is out due to the Walmart Supercenter. Another possible MB relocation to larger ex-Kmart digs is in Claremont, NH, which is actually owned by Arthur T's RMD.

Although you have (as an example) a chain like Price Chopper/Market 32, where all their warehousing is around their HQ in Schenectady (in Rotterdam, just outside the city), and they go into bits of PA, over to Worcester area, up into VT & NH (which may be shorter distances but lack easy direct routes in some locations).
