All the Buffalo stores have the red lettered logo. That one was around in the early 90's. The Albany stores have the logo that came after that. The one I'm talking about has white capital letters on a blue facade.

Rite Aid entered Maine in 1992 by purchasing 34 of 41 Wellby Super Drug Stores from Hannaford Bros.  In 1994, they acquired LaVerdiere's, the state's largest drug store chain.

He is talking about this logo, I think. This logo is on all of the Buffalo stores(I think), but, the stores have the style of the one pictured above.

I liked Thrifty a lot better than Rite Aid! In this area they closed down almost all the old Payless and Thrifty stores and built new, smaller locations nearby. Payless had really large stores, called "Payless Super Drug", which had large electronics, cosemtic, linen, toy, and clothing/shoe departments. When  Rite Aid took over they did away with the clothing, shoes, linens and cut back the cosmetic selection, resulting in literally half the store being empty. They closed those stores within 3 years, one became a Liquor Barn, and another became a Vons grocery store, and the rest are empty. The Thrifty locations were smaller than the Payless, and most of them are Dollar Trees or Factory-2-U stores. At least Rite Aid did not screw with Thrifty ice cream!

Nice Rite Aid! :yup: I remember one that looked like that in Philadelphia back in the 70's, but it closed years ago and the building was knocked down around the mid 90's for another Temple University parking lot.

A garden center? That looks strange. Why don't they just put in a automotive section then? :insane:

I have nothing against those three places so good. Is it all going to be in one building like a small shopping center? Also what bank and is the Rite Aid in Rosemore Shopping Center moving there?

I'm assuming it is going to be in a very small shopping center (I didn't think there would be enough room for all those stores). And I hope the Rite Aid has a drive thru and is open 24 hours like the Walgreens is...I won't have to drive down there anymore.

The Rosemore Rite Aid wouldn't be the one that closes (Honestly, I'm suprised that old store is even still open with Walgreens right down the road), it would be the store in Warminster Plaza (next to Petco) that would close (also an old store that I am suprised is still open)

I don't know what bank, and I can't even guess what it may be. (There is already a PNC Bank, a Commerce Bank, 3 Wachovia's, A Citizens Bank (in the Giant), and a Bank of America, not to mention the 3 or so local banks.)

Theres the PNC, Commerce, Wachovia, two Citizens, First National, Hatboro Savings and Sovern in that area. Maybe this will be a Harleysville or maybe a Willow Grove.

Rite Aid used to have a small store in the Big Y plaza in Mansfield back in the late 90's. They competed with the small CVS store in East Brook Mall almost walking distance away. They then moved into a brand new Rite Aid with the blue logo in nearby Willimantic. The drug store was nice and big and had a drive-through. Walgreens was across the street and CVS down the street. After this, CVS built a fairly big new building and moved out of a small shopping center into their own building also with a drive-through. Rite-Aid closed several locations in CT including Willimantic. The old Rite-Aid is now a Dollar Tree. They walled off the back section and of course put paper over the windows and shut down the drive-through. Later, Walgreens built a new building and moved into that in 2004.

back to rite aid discussion

Did you know that in 1994 Rite aid bought out laverdiere's in 1994 and that chain was in new hampshire and maine and most of the old laverdiere's got relocated to bigger Rite Aid stores. berlin had both. I have a rite aid in my town last than a mile from my house!

rite aid sold ones in laconia and manchester to osco drug which became brooks.

this is the one in gardiner maine. it is  behind hannaford the building east of GUlf.

This is an older Rite Aid in a strip plaza in Schodack (surrounded by a vacant Grand Union to the right and a former Aubachon Hardware, later Hallmark to the left).

The sign is similar to others in the plaza (most are blue & white of some sort) which is why it doesn't look like other RIte Aid signs.

Or, in Colonie you have a GoodAid (or is that a RiteWill) ;)?  A Rite Aid was under construction at the corner of Fuller Road & Central Avenue when the company had one of their "cash problems" and they decided not to finish it.  It sat for a year or so then ws (fianlly) opened as a Goodwill.  Looks just like any of the Blue style Rite Aids posted, with the diamond windows.

There's a very old Rite Aid location in Plainville, Connecticut. It was an independent store called "Appell's" back before Rite Aid took over the building in the early 90's. Any Connecticut natives lucky enough to remember it knows that the building is completely unchanged -- looking just as 60s/70s as it did when it was first built. Of course, most of Plainville still sports that 1970's working class, medium-income look.

The inside of the building is still very outdated but the stuff Appell's once sold is no more -- and they used to sell some cool and unique stuff independent stores are well known for.

I'll get a picture of it as I'm either walking around there or eating at the nearby Subway a few times a week. It's a groovy building!

I don't see anything wrong with someone wanting to contribute to the board. If you must criticize, at least offer constrictive criticsizm. I think the pictures could be improved if the car window was rolled down, eliminating the reflection. Also, in some cases using the setting without the flash will get you a better picture. If something is that far away the flash really won't make much difference anyway.

All right:
The 1st & 2nd photos are the Rite Aid in Pughkeepsie (downtown) - this building used to be a Grand Union and is now split (as you see in the 2nd shot, part of it is a furniture store also).  I'd guess that the tower might have been added when the store was split (doesn't seem like a Grand Union item).
The 3rd shot is the (former) Rite Aid in Poughkeepsie - right across the street from the current one - this is a familiar Rite Aid design - it is now a latin supermarket (so [part of] the supermarket became Rite Aid and the Rite Aid became a supermarket!).
The 4th shot is the Rite Aid in Schaghticoke, NY (Rensselaer County - home of the county fair).  It is in a plaza with a former Grand Union  and several smaller stores.  This also looks like a place where the GU may have been smaller at one time and built new next door, with the RA filling the smaller space (not sure, but it seems like a good possibility).
The 5th shot is the store in West Sand Lake, NY - in a building (or small plaza) with Key Bank and Millers (Shop n Save).
Last photo is the Bennington, VT location - in the plaza with Hannaford and a couple small stores - it moved here from across the road next to the old Price CHopper & Ames (now Home Depot).
Title: Re: Rite Aid
Post by: BillyGr on March 27, 2006, 10:51:41 PM
The first shot is the Kingston store (corner of Route 9W & 32).  The 2nd is on Western Avenue in Guilderland (just below 155).  Other than a slight difference in the signs, they could be two different angles of the same building.

The 3rd is the "almost" Rite Aid at Central & Fuller in Colonie - they had it built and were about ready to start finishing the inside when the company hit one of their "money troubles" - so they cancelled it and it sat unfinished for a year or more before Goodwill decided to move in.  This may be one of (very few) stores where Goodwill can say they are the 1st tenant!

4th is a store on Central Ave in Albany (just above the intersection with Clinton) - a newly built store on the site of a former First American bank and a house or two.

Last is the Hoosick Falls store - this is an older store, and as you can see the building sits right on the sidewalk.  They also have a back door (with a fairly narrow, sloping hallway) that leads to a parking area.  No drive thru.

It's the red lettering just to the right of the light pole in the photo.

An update - this store is going out of business (as of 4/17) - I might have guessed as they had relocated pharmacy customers a bit before that to the CVS in town - it appears to be just a closing, as no other info was listed about a relocation.

Here's a former Appell's Drug Store in Downtown Plainville, Connecticut. This was converted into a Rite-Aid Pharmacy in the early 90's but amazingly still operates out of the original building I remember as a kid and probably before that sometime in the late 60's early 70's.

Uh Oh...

Rite Aid Is Close to Buying
Eckerd and Brooks Drug Chains

By DENNIS K. BERMAN and AMY MERRICK
August 23, 2006 8:30 p.m.
The Wall Street Journal

Rite Aid Corp., finding its footing several years after a major
accounting scandal, is near a deal to purchase the Eckerd and Brooks
drugstore chains from Jean Coutu Group Inc. for about $3.4 billion
in cash and stock, according to two people familiar with the matter.

The deal would add about 1,800 stores to Rite Aid's existing 3,300
locations, solidifying the three-way U.S. drugstore competition
between Rite Aid, Walgreen Co. and CVS Corp. It also would increase
Rite Aid's clout along the East Coast, where it already has its
strongest markets.

Under the terms of the deal, Rite Aid is expected to pay about $1.5
billion in cash and the rest in stock. Jean Coutu Group will own
about 30% of Rite Aid following the transaction, which also must
pass government clearances.

Rite Aid and Jean Coutu Group declined to comment.
------------------------------------
This is awful news because Eckerd stores point blank, are old and horrible. Rite Aid has just started to regain itself with new stores, after years of also having awful stores. And do you know how much overlap there is, at least in the Philly market with Eckerd and Rite Aid? Ah!

CONFIRMED: Montreal-based Jean Coutu Group said Thursday it will receive $1.45 billion US in cash and a 32 per cent stake in Rite Aid, making it the biggest Rite Aid stockholder. Rite Aid will assume $850 million of Jean Coutu Group's long-term debt.

Jean Coutu paid about $2.4 billion US for 1,549 Eckerd stores in 2004 and has been struggling to integrate them ever since.

--------

Almost every pharmacy will now be owned by Rite Aid in northern New England!  I don't understand Jean Coutu.  3/4 of their pharmacies were in the U.S. with only 327 stores in Canada. Their goal was to transform their investment in a regional drugstore chain into a leading ownership position in a Rite Aid.

Aside from taking over the 2 Eckerd locations here in Greensburg, PA, Rite Aid is now also building a store RIGHT ACROSS the street from my distribution house for the papers that I deliver. I go right on that road. I only seen the sign this morning though, they must have put it up from the time I passed yesterday till this morning. I'm PISSED!!! How many friggin stores do they need in one small town?? There's one downtown and one at the end of town across the highway from Super-Walmart. There's also a Med-fast pharmacy inside Shop-N-Save, Medicine Shoppe in the Save-A-Lot plaza, plus other drug stores on the other side of town. But 3 Rite Aids????? wth?? My town is NOT that big, mind you. Takes about 15-20 minutes to drive from one end to the other. I give up...

What is going on with renovations of the old Brook's/Eckerds? From what I've seen in CT, Rite Aid has just changed the signage on the building. They sell Rite Aid products and such, but the interior is the same. Any one have any updates. I tried looking for updates on Google, but found nothing.

The Eckerd's here are freestanding stores, none of them recieved any renovations other than changing the Eckerd name to Rite-Aid on the pill sign. The one on East Pittsburgh Street in Greensburg finally has the sign changed. Still waiting on downtown to start building. Every time I go past there it's at 3:30-4am so no one is doing anything, but the signs are still up. I'm waiting to see what style the building will be. I will get pictures if I can get over there during the day.

The Hamden, CT Rite Aid  (formerly a Brooks) has blue lettering on the building, which turns white when it is lit at night.  When the store was Brooks the lettering was always red.  I have never seen before such a color change in store signs.  Does anyone have any idea how the letters are able to change color?

We're getting a new RITE AID in Southington. It's gonna be located directly off Exit 32 from I-84 East on the property where the building that used to be Southington Chevrolet is located. No word on what's gonna happen to the Rite Aid in downtown Souhtington or the one further up Route 10 in Plainville.

Wasn't it orange because there was a temperary Halloween shop/haunted house there in 2006?

Also, when are the all of the former Brook's locations turned Rite Aid going to get a re-model? When I walked in to one a month ago, everything was just like it was when it was Brook's.

I think the original plan was 18 months - 2 years or so for all stores to be completely done.  At this point, they have been focusing on the signs and the registers to get everything into one system - probably soon they'll start thinking about redesigns.
Also - in some places, they may still be considering what stores may not be kept (they seem to have closed the most obvious, where the Eckerd/Brooks was the older store and very close to the existing Rite Aid, but haven't done much in locations where the Rite Aid is older and the Brooks/Eckerd is newer).
Title: Re: Rite Aid
Post by: AmesNewington on May 09, 2008, 08:26:09 PM
Yes, perhaps they are testing out the former Brook's/Eckerd locations before a re-model to consider which ones are the most viable to keep open. Although, it has almost been a year, and there are no older Rite Aids in my area. They just entered the area replacing Brook's, so they should have made a decision by now.

I always thought Rite Aid has/had pretty good pricing (Brooks/Eckerd's pricing used to be extremely high), although Walgreens tends to beat them on sale items. CVS's pricing is crazy high..I don't remember the last time I even bought something from a CVS--plus you have to carry another dumb card around to get their sale prices.

Yes it was because JCP used to own Eckerd's and when Rite Aid bought them they continued to accept JCP cards.

Attached is a photo of the closed store in Goffstown, NH.
You can see orange striped floors running through the store. This was their standard floor pattern from the late 70's through the 80's.
The floor style was changed to a standard off white tile with occasional areas of thin stripes in red and blue.
This color pallet was choosen from the colors of the sheild store logo.

The stores from the 70's and 80's had the exact same stripes on the walls except they were in a rainbow of colors to include, blue, green, yellow, orange, red. It was quite colorful.
Now you'll notice this location has blue and green stripes, this was done during the renovations of this store. They utilized the green because they felt it would complement the orange in the floor.
The newer stores in the 90's had the same stripe except it was Blue and Red.
Title: Re: Rite Aid
Post by: gu4ever on July 28, 2009, 10:49:22 AM
In the 90's they launched the great idea of Rite Express. You could mail everything you needed to right from you local drugstore. Airborne Express, UPS and USPS was offered along with photocopies, fax service and passport photos. This location originally had mailbox rentals too.
The plaza already had a photoshop store in it that offered one hour photo. So this Rite Aid did not have the photo machine. Pictures were sent out daily through Qualex services.
Rite Express was short lived and quickly replaced in new stores exclusively to the 1 hour photo.
Title: Re: Rite Aid
Post by: gu4ever on July 28, 2009, 11:00:21 AM
This store had the traditional blue Aisle Marker. It ran through the center of the store from left to right. This was standard in all renovated stores as well as all the stores opening during the early 90's.
It often was done in blue, however it was also done in the red color "same as the express canopy". This color proved hard to read from the white and light redish hughes that where used.
You will also notice that a deep blue stripe runs painted across the back of the entire store. in the traditional stores of the 70's and 80's, both the front and back of the store would have built in canopy mirrored valances. This ran the entire lenght of the back and front of the store. It had signs in green letters posted over the "Pharmacy" and up front at the "Cashier" station.

The store with the blue aisle marker and the green and white stripes reminds me of the Rite Aid in Canton, NY.  The store is in the Midtown Plaza and is about 6,000 square feet.  It looks just like that inside except there is no Rite Express.  Here is what it looks like from the outside.

Here is the Nashua, NH store. In most locations they have a higher ceiling so the striped walls are more apparent.

Not a very exciting photo, but it shows the blue and red stripe together in the front of the store, and also repeated in the back of the store. A solid red stripe is repeated throughout the aisles of the rest of the store.

This store opened in the late 90's or tried to. It completed it's construction and then sat completly finished, with store sign attached for a year before it finally opened it's doors.  After several years of poor performance Rite Aid sold this location to Osco Drug, who moved from it's former location further down on South Willow St.
Osco Drug spent alot of money renovating the store and removing the RA-1 concept "aisles going in every direction, with a main street Aisle looping through the center of the store". Within a few years Brooks stepped in and once again, the store was transformed and a new sign attached to the exterior.
Everytime I drive by this location now, and see the new Rite Aid Banner on the store sign I shake my head and wonder...
That is a ton of money to spend on transforming it to look like an Osco, to look like a Brooks and again back to a Rite Aid.

Wellby Superdrug sat across the street in the shopping center "this was the store that I spent a week training at before the Milford, NH store opened."  In 1992 they were taken over by Rite Aid and eventually expanded the store by moving down to the corner of the shopping center. Now they have the free standing store shown by Zayre88's photo in the previous post.

The interior view of the empty store, you can see the mirrored valance that runs along the back wall of the store. This was a traditional piece of architecture along with the orange striped floors. The pharmacy sits in the back left corner and the managers office is located in the front right corner out of view.

http://www.drugstorenews.com/article/report-walmart-may-be-eyeing-rite-aid

Crain's New York Business (referenced in the above linked story) is reporting on rumors that Walmart might buy troubled Rite Aid to kick its small store strategy into high gear, get into more urban areas and grow its stagnant US business. There are a few issues with this:

1.  Rite Aid is union, while Walmart is not
2.  Integration that could take years to sort out (not every acquirer is as adept as CVS)
3.  Walmart hasn't exactly hit a home run with smaller format stores as of yet
4.  Rite Aid is in a lot of strip centers where there are restrictions as to what it can carry due to competing retailers in the same center; Walmart would inherit these restrictions even as it tries to alter Rite Aid's merchandise mix

Thoughts???

This store was actually under construction as an Eckerd, but was already a Rite Aid by the time it opened; as a result it has a Rite Aid layout inside (the prototype with cosmetics in the middle of the store), but an Eckerd exterior.  The shopping center seemed like it was demolished and rebuilt in pieces; everything around Rite Aid and Blockbuster was knocked down, then once those stores moved the old stores were demoed and new stores were built in their place connecting the already built sections.  I believe it ended up being the first Eckerd to relocate post-Rite Aid.

No word on what's gonna happen to the Rite Aid in downtown Souhtington or the one further up Route 10 in Plainville.

They redid the exterior of Northside Plaza in Bristol last Summer. It looks nice. The Rite Aid still looks crummy. They're sprucing up the property because of the revitalization of downtown Bristol will supposedly happen soon. And more good news. CVS is looking to open across the street from this Rite Aid on the Route 6 side of the plaza.

What other drugstore chain did the Rite Aid in Massena, NY used to be part of? Based on its signage it appears to have been either an Eckerd or a Brooks but I can't tell which. If it was an Eckerd, it most likely was a Fay's (and a Thrift Drug in all but name at one point) before that. Anyway, I found this now-closed Rite Aid pretty interesting... it took up part of a former Jamesway!

Realized I never replied to this - I'm not totally sure, but I think they picked up that one (along with other former Grand Union stores) around the time of GU's bankruptcy, or shortly thereafter.

I would assume this store would do a fairly good business, given that they are the only "grocery" store in that area and the distance of 20 miles +/- to either Bennington or Brattleboro for other shopping options - even if Shaw's were to go out of existance completely, it would seem likely that someone else would pick up the spot.

No idea personally, but Eckerd was the more prevalent name in NY (though there were some Brooks many years ago in Albany which were sold to Revco then to CVS - unless Brooks stayed in the northern areas?).  Any pictures that might help?

I haven't seen a list. I only know about Queen Street Southington because my Mom and I went shopping there on Tuesday. There were signs that says Walgreens Pharmacy Now Open, a Now Hiring Sign that said visit WALGREENS.COM, the Walmart Pharmacy signs over the pharmacy. Plus the cashier that rang us out told us.

If I were to guess in my area I would say Closing: 52 East Street Plainville, 430 North Main Street Bristol, and 167 Main Street Southington. All 3 are small ancient stores.

Newington (40 Cedar Street) will become Walgreens. My family has used this Rite Aid for prescriptions since it was Brook's. They just remodeled the inside. This one should have stayed as Rite Aid. I'm curious as to if the New Britain (Stanley Street) and Berlin (Farmington Avenue) stores will change over. Berlin may close as there is a Walgreens one block over. The Newington store is down the road from the Berlin Turnpike Walgreens and also the Elmwood one. New Britain has a few Walgreens already.

Don't forget, there is a 3rd option - some of those stores may remain as Rite Aid stores.

In the final version of the purchases, 34 out of 77 existing CT Rite Aid stores will stay as Rite Aid (so nearly 1 out of every 2).

Same goes for those stores in NY (323 of 596 remain Rite Aid), 62 of 68 in NH stay.

However none in ME or RI will remain Rite Aid, and only 10 of 144 in MA will, along with 6 of 37 in VT.

So it would seem likely that some in areas where they currently exist close to each other are the likely candidates for staying as Rite Aid, but no guarantee that will happen in all cases.

http://couponsinthenews.com/2017/06/29/what-will-happen-to-your-rite-aid-store-the-latest-list/ has the list I got those numbers from, along with counts for all the states Rite Aid has stores in currently.

I know Walgreen's bought Rite Aid, but it's too bad CVS couldn't have gotten the 500 Queen Street store. It could have replaced their old and small store next to ShopRite in the ShopRite Plaza. That CVS is the reason Shaw's (and now ShopRite) could not have a pharmacy. (It's all how the leases are written I guess). In Bristol the Dollar Tree was a CVS and the old Stop & Shop (that is TJ MAXX/SAVERS now) had a pharmacy. But with Stop & Shop Dollar Tree isn't allowed to sell frozen food. The same in New Britain. That Dollar Tree isn't allowed to sell frozen food because of Price Rite. I think the whole plaza is sub-leased from Stop & Shop, which was where Price Rite is now. On the opposite side of coin the Pine Plaza on Pine Street in Forestville (Bristol), which featured a Brooks Pharmacy was demolished in the mid-1990s and was replaced with the Forestville Commons plaza in 1998 and anchored by Stop & Shop - Brooks was not allowed to be part of the new plaza because Stop & Shop has a pharmacy.

No, I would expect that any that say that are ones that are actually converting to Walgreens at some point.

I was thinking more along where others said that they figured a particular Rite Aid would likely close as it was close to an existing Walgreens, but those "close" stores might turn out to be some of the ones that stay as Rite Aid rather than closing outright.

They have been pretty quiet about which ones are doing what (aside from the few places people have seen these pharmacy switching signs, so it may take a bit before anyone can figure out exactly which stores are doing what.

The Rite Aid in Norwich is closing as of June 1st. Pharmacy has to remain open for another couple weeks due to federal regulations.
This Rite Aid is an old Brooks, in a strip mall between TJ Maxx and Shop Rite among a few other small retailers. It doesn’t have a drive thru, and hasn’t been touched since it converted from Brooks. There’s also a large stand alone Walgreens a mile down the road, so it doesn’t surprise me this store was on their chopping block.
No clearance sales or anything, but the store is stocked with very limited inventory. Only 1 or 2 items of everything in the store pretty much.

The Rite Aid in Berlin, CT is closing. The larger Walgreen's a block away picked up Rite Aid's prescriptions. It's no longer on the store locator on the website, however when I drove by, it looked like the actual store was still open. Perhaps they will liquidate shortly. Lights were on and the signs were still up. A sign on the building was installed indicating the moving of prescriptions to Walgreen's.

I always imagined this would happen. This Rite Aid was small and outdated from the Brook's Pharmacy days (I assume it was another small pharmacy before that), however, it did have a drive through. I think Family Dollar should relocate from Webster Square to here and either stay FD or change to a Dollar General. It's about the same size store if not a bit larger.

Kind of unlikely it would change from one chain to another just by moving...

(Dollar General is a separate chain - Family Dollar and Dollar Tree are under the same ownership).

I think it would be a poor decision to move a dollar store to the center of the town. They are working on rebuilding the downtown area now that the train station renovations are completing. Not to mention that the dollar stores in town barely get business beyond movie theater customers and people coming off of the CT transit busses. They should subdivide that space and work to get a Starbucks or other business that will attract customers to the area.

The Rite Aid at 52 East Street in Plainville,  CT closed. They are no longer on the store locator. There is a sign on the pylon sign at ShopRite Plaza on Route 10 in nearby Southington that says "CVS welcomes Rite Aid Customers."

11:40PM edit. This property, which also includes an adjacent branch of Liberty Bank went on the market in December. Asking price is $1,459,199. The former Rite Aid is a little over 6,000 square feet and was originally Appel's Pharmacy.

Went by the old Rite Aid in downtown Southington today. The grass is very overgrown. Didn't have my cell camera with me. You think I would always bring it with me when I go downtown.

I think that sign is just with the conversions in general - I've seen them around here at several CVS locations with a Rite Aid nearby that Walgreens is taking over.

Just to let those who may not like Walgreens (or perhaps their insurance doesn't) know that CVS is there for them.

I went to the liquidation sale in Berlin, CT yesterday. They obviously shipped most of their product to other Rite Aid locations and kept a small portion of merchandise. It was 50% off the entire store. I overheard an employee asking another one if tomorrow would be 75% off and I think she said yes. That's OK. I got $29 worth of items, some at a really good discount. I just wanted to go for the heck of it. I never went to this one (maybe once as Brooks years ago). It was a cute store and the staff was very friendly (almost like a mom and pop establishment). However, I can understand why it was closing. It was small and the huge Walgreens was literally on the same block. They will be closing next Thursday (6/21). The good thing is that the few employees there seem to have retained employment with Walgreens. So I doubt anyone lost their job with these closings. There are tons of Walgreens stores out there and for now the other Rite Aids in the area like Newington and New Britain are staying put and may actually be converted to Walgreens in a few years.

Just FYI - The Rite Aid website now shows (on each individual location, at least) the ones that have been bought by Walgreens.  Those stores have a note at the top saying so, while others not bought have no notice, so you can tell which ones will remain Rite Aid and (potentially) be sold to Albertsons, if that deal goes through.

Probably also indicated by signs in the stores themselves, but this is an easier way to know about stores you may not be near regularly.

500 Queen Street Southington, CT is closed. (Except for the Walgreen's Pharmacy inside). Hasn't even been open 9 years. It opened in the fall of 2009. The old one at 430 North Main in Bristol, CT closed too. Only thing left in that plaza is a store front branch of Tunxis Community College and a free standing Santander Bank and a freestanding BK.

The 500 Queen Street store in Southington was winding down its Liquidation Sale last week. (Turns out when I saw them closed on the 20th they were in the process of getting things ready for the liquidation). Mom and I went to the Liquidation Sale on Monday the 2nd. There wasn't much left. Basically all they had left were greeting cards and products if you have a major cockroach infestation.  >:D We didn't buy anything. We made out better when they had the liquidation sale at the one in downtown Southington a few months ago. One of the women who works there is so rude and nasty (plus you can barely understand her when she talks) was working that day. I hope she doesn't get a transfer to a location that is staying open.

This location closed for good last week. Large signs in the window read “This Rite Aid is permanently Closed” and gives the address of the Walgreens down the road to visit.
Meanwhile, down the road at the Walgreens are huge grand opening style flags that say “Welcome Rite Aid customers “.

Perhaps the complete changeover to Walgreens may be coming sooner than expected. The Newington CT store's outdoor building signage has been removed with a Rite Aid banner in place of the Rite Aid signs and a sign on one side of the building states "Open During Remodeling". No work is being done inside and I'm surprised there would be as this location was remodeled a year or two ago to their new sleek design.

Here in Maine Walgreens has assumed the pharmacy part of the operation but otherwise the stores are typical Rite Aids and still distribute weekly flyers.

This whole thing with Rite Aid and Walgreens really sucks. My Mom used to shop at Rite Aid from time to time and all three local stores she would shop at all closed - All on Route 10. Two in Southington and one in Plainville. Plus a 4th in Bristol, which she didn't shop at even going back 15 1/2 years ago when we still lived in Bristol.

That's what Newington is operating as. But I can't see why they'd change the signage if the store wasn't staying Rite Aid. They said it would take up to 3 years to convert completely. My guess is that now that the slew of older/smaller Rite Aids Walgreens closed are pretty much all liquidated, they will focus on those stores that are left and will start the name change.

Here is some footage of what's left of a former Rite Aid that was once located in Monongahela, PA until this one and one that was used to be a Eckerd prior to 2007 (Which is now a thrift shop run by the Washington City Mission) was replaced by a Larger Rite Aid equipped with a Drive Through pickup for prescriptions (Located across the street from the Monongahela City Hall). The roof on this one had collapsed from a Severe Storm a short time back. The building was in the process of being demolished as this video was being filmed (Filmed on 10/29/2018). Who knows what will happen to this site but I think that the site should be sold to Dollar General which can build a new store to replace the current store they have that is located nearby (It  wouldn't hurt them to do so).

I passed a Rite Aid store that was actually open yesterday (Christmas Day).

It was across the street from St. Clair Hospital in the southern suburbs of Pittsburgh.
These large chains like Rite Aid and CVS will typically keep a couple of stores in each
market open on Christmas Day to handle emergency prescription fills.

I guess having one across the street from a hospital makes a lot of sense.

The Rite Aid on PA Route 51 across from Century III Mall has closed.

That may be due to the continuing implosion of the mall, but more likely their merger with
Walgreens, which has a very large store just to the north at the Lebanon Church Cloverleaf.

I like that Rite Aid has a store in the PIT airport, center core concourse. One can actually buy a water bottle sometimes for $1, which beats the average $4 cost one typically spends at Hudson Books or other airport concessions.
Title: Re: Rite Aid
Post by: TheFugitive on March 25, 2019, 03:01:06 PM
When that airport opened the concourse was planned to be an actual mall.  They were planning to have regular shoppers in there along with people who were coming and going from flights.

They even included contract language in the leases which stated that merchants inside the Airmall must charge the same prices that are found in offsite locations.

Of course 9-11 forced ramped-up security and sort of killed the whole idea of the airport being a mall.  Plus more than half the gates are empty since the airport failed to do what it was built to do, retain US Air's hub.

There is talk of a major reconstruction/downsizing of the airport due to all of these factors.

The Rite Aid on the Silas Deane Highway in Wethersfield, CT closed recently. Not sure when. It was sold to Walgreens along with the ones around it but stayed as Rite Aid. I'm not even sure if they even went through a liquidation sale like the others did last year. It was an older building that housed a Brooks and probably something before that. It is down the street a few blocks from a long standing Walgreens which is probably why it wasn't converted.

The Store Locator on their website still has several stores remaining in Connecticut, mostly in smaller towns. When I drove down Route 6 starting in Terryville and ending Watertown to get to Kmart, there were 4 Rite Aids on the same route. They all remain open under Walgreens ownership (this stretch also had about 3 Adams Hometown Markets). An example of a town with a RA not purchased by Walgreens is Cheshire. They have two.

They are doing renovations on the building that used to house Rite Aid at 167 Main Street in downtown Southington. Not sure what it's going to be (if anything) yet. The building was sold to a local developer who owns several other properties in downtown Southington. - It's interesting if something is going into this one because the former location at 500 Queen Street still sits empty and that's in a better area.

Other miscellaneous Rite Aid news. Lately I've heard a lot of Rite Aid commercials on the radio. Also interesting is the fact that Rite Aid remains open inside the King of Prussia Mall in King of Prussia, PA.

Schenectady is now to its last Rite Aid. State St. and Altamont Ave. have closed, and the Eastern Parkway location is presently operating as a Walgreens.  That Rite Aid is on Van Vranken Ave, also soon to be Walgreens. Looks to be a mid-1990s build, app. 1996-1997, has a lowercase logo, and RA1 décor paired with Customer World aisle markers.

It is weird how many Rite Aids neither Walgreens or Kroger wanted. You'd think Walgreen would want the larger stores over these rinky-dink ones.

A good lot of ours were done between 2011 and 2014, with some done later.

Size and location logic doesn't really apply when over half of Rite Aid stores are soon to become Walgreens or close outright.

Also in the region, the Schodack store closed as of Sat (9/7) and will reopen at the end of the week as Walgreens.

The store in Rensselaer is in it's final week and will do the same process being closed next Sun 9/15

The store at Osborne & Shaker in Albany will follow the week of 9/22

And the Menands Store will finish up this sequence the week of 9/29

Haven't been in downtown, but that is (I think) the only other one in this area not yet converted or closed that is going to (the ones on Western by SUNY, Central & 155 and by HVCC will remain Rite Aid, along with a couple in Clifton Park).

Chatham in Columbia County is also left to convert (their limited 25% off ended 9/7, so it may be a bit as they usually do a 40% for a time before the final 3 weeks of more & more categories with up to 70% off).

The ones in Clifton Park aren't on the conversion list, so I assume they're staying. The one on 146 in front of Market32 has since closed. Quite pathetic as it was quite new as it was a freestanding replacement for a plaza location that was demolished in order for Price Chopper to build a Market32 on site.

A good lot of ours were done between 2011 and 2014, with some done later.

Size and location logic doesn't really apply when over half of Rite Aid stores are soon to become Walgreens or close outright.
yeah, but i am scratching my head over their decision to keep the most dank and aged stores (Eastern Ave & Van Vranken Ave) and close some of the newer stores.. IDK I guess I just held Walgreens to a higher standard their purpose built Walgreens stores were always much nicer than a comparable Rite Aid

Yes, I was thinking of the one right at 146 & 9, and the one farther down 9 that was originally an Eckerd (probably technically Halfmoon at that point).

Hadn't noticed that the one at 146/146A had disappeared from the list (or that it hadn't then appeared on the Walgreens list), but I guess they thought having two that close wasn't needed (with the original Walgreens on 146 by the other Market32 being the other store here).
They did that with a couple in Albany - in one case, both Rite Aid stores they bought, but they converted a freestanding one in the 500's of Central Ave. by the end of Clinton and then closed the former Eckerd in Westgate, which is around the 900's of central Avenue, while in the other closing a Rite Aid in the South End on South Pearl, noting it was only a mile from their store by the VA Hospital (but not a popular decision, as the area has many that don't have transport and the mile is mostly uphill if they walk).

Should also note that there are two more stores on the Rensselaer County side.
The Hoosick Street store is staying as Rite Aid, while the 2nd Avenue location (next to Price Chopper way up north along the river, just before Route 4 crosses over to Waterford) is to be converted, but I have no idea what schedule they are on.

Probably a combination of things.  Some might depend on what the sales records are (if a newer store just didn't do much business, seems not too logical to keep it open), some may be what else is in the area (if there was any existing Walgreens presence where they could easily close one and send the customers to the other without much chance of losing them, thus getting both sets of sales with only the cost of running one store) and there might also be cases where a particular store they are keeping for now, with thoughts that it is good enough to eventually be replaced with a newer building but for whatever reason that is hard to do at this time (costs, no spot currently available or whatever).

They are doing renovations on the building that used to house Rite Aid at 167 Main Street in downtown Southington.

One week later the building is now completely boarded up.  ???

I wonder if the Rite Aid in East Hartford at School Street and Ellington Road is closed...

They are doing renovations on the building that used to house Rite Aid at 167 Main Street in downtown Southington. Not sure what it's going to be (if anything) yet. The building was sold to a local developer who owns several other properties in downtown Southington.

Bristol Health (the new name of Bristol Hospital) is moving doctors offices into the former Rite Aid in downton Southington. Currently they're located in an office building near Flair Restaurant (formerly Geno's Grille).

Bristol Health moving to former Rite Aid in Southington
By Michael Gagne, Record-Journal staff

SOUTHINGTON â€" The front and side windows of the former Rite Aid store at the corner of Main and Vermont streets are currently boarded up.

But the building won’t be empty much longer. Bristol Health Medical Group expects to relocate from its current office, 78 Main St., by mid-December. Bristol Health operates medical offices and facilities, including Bristol Hospital, in seven different communities. Its first Southington practice opened in 2017 at 78 Main St.

Spokesman Christopher Boyle said Bristol Health has already outgrown its existing space, which he described as a success since it opened nearly two years ago.

“The current office is about 2,200 square feet. The new building is about 7,000 square feet,” he said. “The bottom line is since we opened that new office, we’ve done really well. We’ve outgrown it.”

About 5,000 square feet in the new building will be medical space â€" including 12 examination rooms and a blood draw station, Boyle said. The medical services it will offer include primary care, general surgery, orthopedics, podiatry, psychiatry, behavioral health, pulmonary medicine and urology.

The building at 167 Main St. originally opened as a Rite Aid Pharmacy in 1984.

Town records show the planning & zoning department and town engineer approved a permit request to convert the space into a medical office last spring. That permit was requested by developer Florian Properties, which owns the property.

Town property records show the property was purchased by Format LLC for $695,000 in December 2018. According to state  business filings, Format’s principal is listed as Mathew W. Florian, who is also the manager of Florian Properties.

Bristol Health is paying to renovate the building, which it will be leasing. The exact total was not available on Friday.

“The old location was a great way to get established in Southington,” Boyle said. “With the new office, we look forward to really providing what we pride ourselves on â€" great safe and quality care.”
